I thought I was crazy for disliking Free Guy so much after I saw it, and I went in with good expectations. If I wasn't there with a friend I would have walked out of the movie at 10 different points.

The shot where a young kid is watching Ryan Reynolds on an old tv with his family in a broken down shack in a third world county made me fucking loose it.

It's refreshing hearing them almost getting genuinely angry about this. I'm sick of people saying things like "oh it's just harmless fun if you don't like it just don't watch it", like this is everything that popular entertainment is anymore and it's genuinely worth getting mad about.

I actually didn't mind some of it. The parts that felt like they were actually written by a gamer were kind of fun, even if Yahtzee's book Mogworld already did the same joke earlier and better. The parts that felt like they were written by a boomer who doesn't know how technology works and Taika Waititi being totally wasted on an unfunny and hysterical (In the other definition) character whose actions never make any fucking sense. Epic wouldn't turn Fornite off to get rid of an errant bug and then destroy their own product just to prevent a story as important as "Sentient NPC" from getting out. In fact I'm not convinced you could get Epic to turn Fortnite off even if it spawned a black hole that started consuming the universe.

For some reason the first 10 seconds I thought they're MAKING their own indie film that's the worst film of the year, rather than just discussing one. Like this video was gonna be an hour long youtube sketch.

I thought the dumbest thing about this POS movie is that people are surprised that AI is real. WTF that makes no sense. You see players through out the whole movie having conversations with NPCs how is that possible without AI? Has no one ever talked to an NPC before asked them questions they can’t be programmed to answer. It’s so damn stupid

I saw this film two days early. My local cinema were doing a "Secret Screening" of an upcoming film and me and my mates thought that would be interesting but were we wrong. We also got accused of stealing a kids phone while playing on the sonic racing arcade machine but thats beside the point.

I work at a cinema and I can say this film is the worst! the amount of times I’ve had to listen to that f-ing alarm sound in the stupid trailer and walk in to absolute cringe in the cinema only to walk out after cleaning stale popcorn. Hate this movie with every inch of my being. Thankyou for finally being the first to call out this mediocrity :)

I saw the film this afternoon (it's everything wrong with modern mainstream filmmaking but I found it enjoyable still) and the best part, apart from the dead silence when a joke didn't land, was when one joke happened and two seconds later one guy goes "hur-hur" very loudly.

This movie was so bad it was enjoyable for me personally, the moments it tries to be funny are hilarious, not because they're actually funny but because they fall so far from being funny its comedic. The tropey, Cliche, contrived bullshit never failed to kill me with laughter. The writing is absurdly cringy and awkward and some moments sent me into a laughing fit, despite being intended to be serious or emotional in tone. I'm sure most would find no enjoyment in this, and I imagine it would be a torturous to watch in a cinema. But as an at-home viewing experience where I could pause at any time and reflect on how bad a moment was, this was an absolute joy. I recommend for anyone who also finds enjoyment in making fun of garbage like this

I think we have to probably wait another 20 years or so for video game movies to become "good", because at that point the people in charge actually grew up with them and don't just treat them like something they think of as too low for something "artsy" like a movie, but it might make money, so they hire some hack to write a box standard script and then add some references to video games.

Genuinely don’t understand how someone could enjoy this film

Ryan Renolds as Deadpool was a fun time. But what the industry is doing to him nowadays (casting him in Netflix Exclusives, Free Guy, where he plays the bodyguard with Samuel L. Jackson) is just a record now on repeat. Like a dish rag, Ryan cleans up nicely when used for the first two to three times. Further use after that (speficially to clean up the industry's demands and shit) just stains it further. A talent now squandered and abused by the industry.

I swear to god I’m in a simulation right now specifically designed to fuck with me. I’m getting ratio’d over on r/fellowkids about this movie. This movie was horrendous, and that’s coming from someone who *loves* them some Ryan Reynolds. “Fellowkids” and “fellowgamers” are the quintessential apt descriptions for this movie. Especially egregious is everything related to the game development aspects. If the movie would have just never left free city or the perspective of ‘Guy’ it would have been fine. Everything else was ham-fisted at best. The fact that it is reviewing well is a slap in the simulations face. Edit: it’s not an American thing. It’s a normie thing.

Swear to god what really rubs me the wrong way was they got actual streamers were there to rake in all the kids, plus the very unnecessary crossovers during the dude fight scene (the one with the lightsabers and god forbid the fortnite pickaxe). Besides all the occasion swears I was so genuinely surprised after I watched the movie and saw it was PG-13 when the whole movie felt like it was catered to a 7 year old.

Watching this film, I did not feel like a "Free Guy". I felt like a prisoner trapped in a theatre for what felt like hours on end, watching dated, infantile humour packed full of pointless references thriving off of viewers' nostalgia.

This is not a movie. It is a 2 hour long advertising campaign. It is a gigantic trip of "What is selling?" and "What do we want to sell more" from disney put on screen. So terribly bad that it gets offensive.

Watching this, and I get a Mint mobile ad right in the middle starring Ryan Reynolds. This movie should have been Pixels 2, starring Adam Sandler, with a Matrix plot line where he realizes he's always been in a video game, and Pixels 1 never mattered.

I know this is just 1 small aspect of the film, but I feel like the whole "improvised, keep riffing take after take and cobble together scenes" type comedy is a HUGE problem. Comedy as a genre has been largely dead since the early 2010's-ish and I feel like that was a huge factor. Melissa Mcarthy has done more damage to comedy than an H Bomb because I think she was one of the main people who popularized that trend. Comedies don't seem like they're actually written anymore. They get a basic plot, then get some "funny" actors on set and let them bullshit for 2 hours and cobble together garbage. Another giant problem is that, for some reason, these types of movies are always made by people who clearly don't love games. They play a few hours of Madden, Halo and GTA and then make a movie. They only know the surface level traits of gaming and are devoid of the knowledge of the culture and deeper aspects that someone who's grow up playing them. It always comes off as totally inauthentic. Every time. It's like if I tried to make a movie about the NFL. Football fans would know immediately that I was a fraud. I don't mean to make it sound like playing video games is some noble, difficult career that requires study, it's not. But for fucks sake, just get people who actually love and play games. It's not that hard. It's a very popular hobby.

What I hated about the half life and portal references is that they were soft references, with knock off equivalents, if they wanted to do fan service right they could have paid to use many things from games and have the actual game objects or effects but no they do a copyright dodging slight reference to the games
