Introducing the list of the 10 worst new car trends of 2022!
Sure, some can’t exactly be helped. For example, take a look at soft limiters. Loads of manufacturers are fitting these to newer cars due to emissions regulations. We’re not happy about it, but we can kind of understand where they’re coming from.
But then again, not all trends have to be adopted, yet we still see them continue to appear on new cars! For example, what’s with so many electric cars rolling up with front grilles? It’s not like they’ve got an engine that needs cooling!
These are just two of the trends we find most annoying in 2022. To find out what the others are, stick with Mat in this all-new video!

I completly agree with all of those . I would like to add that huge screen to command all functions of the car including the air conditioning. It's just cheaper for the car manufacturers to buy a few million identical screens than to engineer and manufacture dozens and dozens of different buttons, switches, etc. for all their car models. It sucks for the drivers, but hey - who cares? The companies will earn more.

Have you noticed a marked increase in the number of times the car in front starts wandering between the verge and the white line? Not just the once, it appears to go on for a mile or so. They're either fiddling with their touch screen dash, in the middle of a text conversation or half-cut. I'd be interested to see the stats on the number of times the police have pulled over these clowns, thinking it's the latter.

Another thing with the mirror /camera thing. When you look in a mirror, you can move your eyes / head / body around when looking in the mirror and you see different things and things just out of sight. You don't get taht with a fixed camera. I totally agree with most of these. I do take issue with the Plug in Hybrid as I think you are right but only because the car manufactures are doing what they did with E85 and going half baked on the idea. If they truly put in a solid effort into the design I think it would be the best idea out there. A sixth reason you didnt touch on the side mirror cameras is it only takes one drop of water on the lens to totally distort your side view where as a mirror you got to get quite a bit of water on it before it impairs the visibility. Lets be honest the modern infotainment and touch screen craze is by people who absolutely hate the driver and just want to make the time behind the wheel as miserable as possible or simply cause accidents.

easily debunked, the camera's are well covered. What also annoys me is that the big german brands lost their consistency in naming their models. For example Mercedes always had the A B C ... S class, the SUV version added "GL" to the name, like GLA GLB ... GLS. But now with their new electric models its a big mess. For example EQS is a sedan and the SUV counterpart is called "EQS SUV" but then the EQC is an SUV and the upcoming sedan version will be called the "EQC SEDAN" witch doesn't make much sense. What I noticed recently was that many cars have a raising beltline and a falling roofline (the highest point is usually above the driver's head). I guess that's fine for aerodynamics and gives a "coupé line", but it also means restricted headroom for those in the rear and the side windows become smaller and smaller towards the rear. And it's not just one manufacturer, pretty much everyone does it nowadays; I wonder whether it's aerodynamic requirement or just a trend?
@jesflynn4048
@jesflynn4048 10 ай бұрын
aero's?: partially. The raised 'beltline' does not improve the drag coefficient; a progressively tapered ('boat-tailed' or tear-drop shaped) body does. The key here is to look at the car from the rear quarter: when the bodywork (whether glass, metal or plastic irrelevant) 'stops' , usually with some form of blunt rear end (i.e. appears squarely sawn-off), what is the total cross-sectional area? It's this that adds a large proportion of the total vehicle drag. As cars get ever larger, those csa's are grow commensurately. The 'raising beltline' is purely a styling gimmick to give a testosterone boost for boys, a harking-back to the wedgie supercars of the 70's/80's. it actually increases drag coefficient and fuel consumption. On the upside, more metal/less glass = stiffer/lighter body (and increased probability of child vomit)...

I was out in the middle of nowhere doing some swiftwater rescue training a couple years ago. 2 coast guard rescue swimmers drove out in a tesla 3 or X, with the pop out handles. For some reason the handles didn't pop out at the end of an 8 hour training day, 40 miles from the nearest town. We loaned them a phone to call a technician and they had to wait 2 hours in their soaking wet gear for the tech to get into their car so they could drive home. Lack of door handles is really an unacceptable feature to be pushing when its getting people stranded in bear country.

I'll agree! Obviously it is somewhat ridiculous to have both an electric motor and a gasoline engine in a vehicle, but both Hybrids and PHEVs let you get some or most of the benefits of an EV in a world that, in many ways, is not yet ready for EVs. (I'm talking about the inferior charging infrastructure for us non-Tesla owners). I drive almost all of my miles using the electric motor, but when I do want to make that trip to IKEA in Portland or to visit my daughter in Seattle, I can do that as well without worrying about how and where I am going to charge the car. I look at PHEVs as being a great stepping stone into the EV future, and by the time I am ready to replace this car, hopefully an EV will be an easier choice.

I would also add the worst thing about frontal charge port is living in a country with winter for five months of the year and the chargeport beeing impossible to open due to snow and ice. Good video, but I disagree with you on plug in hybrids. Yes, you’re right if the majority of your driving is long trips. But if most of your travel is to work and back, and you can make that entire drive on the EV, then a PHEV is ideal. My wife drives the Kia Sorento PHEV, and in 3,000 miles, we’ve only had to fill up with gas twice because she uses EV only going to and coming back from work. For our use case, getting the slightly worse mileage on longer trips (even though 36mpg is still very good for a large SUV and that’s what we get on long trips), is well worth it, because the rest of the time we rarely ever need to fill up.

Agree with Tamir here. It seems that given the state of charging infrastructure now and in the near future, plus the state of most on-board charging systems, the PHEV is actually the best choice for a lot of people right now. Not sure why he's complaining about 36 mpg, when the ICE model Sorento gets 29 mpg on the highway. I mean, if the argument is that the premium you pay for a PHEV or hybrid vehicle is not worth the fuel savings then...okay, EVs and PHEV lose this battle every time. Except we know that people are not strictly practical when they make vehicle purchases. I mean, look at what they buy! But for some reason, folks who love to hate on hybrids and EVs suddenly find religion and get all kinds of practical when explaining why it's foolish to buy an EV or PHEV or Hybrid.

The biggest issue I find with digital mirrors (I have a digital rearview mirror in my Lotus because the view out the rear is so limited) is the focal distance. If you have 20/20 vision without needing glasses, you'd be fine. If not, then you might have some difficulty focusing on what's in the "mirror." With a real mirror, your eyes focus at the actual distance to the object (the light travels that whole distance to your eyes), but with a digital, you're focusing at the distance between your eyes and the screen. That can be an issue. With my glasses on, which help me focus on distant objects, I have trouble focusing on what's on the screeen.

If I wasn't on the damn bridge I would have pulled over then and there and took a screwdriver to the fricking lane button and a hammer to the bloody camera !!! That was the most useless near death experience I ever had. 100% agree. I had my 2016 Audi A8 (which does not have lane assist) in for a service at my local Audi dealer and had an A6 car with lane assist (which was enabled and the dealer did not mention this). Now I have been taught to indicate only when appropriate in my advanced driving course, so driving down a dual carriageway at 70mph I wanted to move into the right hand lane to turn right at the next roundabout. There was no other car in sight... so I tried to change lanes, but without the indicator on, lane assist fought me, until I used enough force on the steering wheel to overcome it. Then, once I defeated lane assist it pretty-much steered me into the central reservation! I had a very lucky escape for sure!

The genius is that you can get such a bonkers car without loosing the safety, reliability or tech that you would with something vintage that even comes close. The cameras work pretty well, are inboard of the sides of the doors, and are well integrated into the dashboard, avoiding the whole 'iPad blu-tacked to an otherwise great interior' thing, which I think is a far greater design sin. I would love to have the ability to run on battery in city driving for lower pollution/better stop and go efficiency, then switch over to the combustion engine when cruising on the highway. hybrids are the option with the least amount of pollution we humans have at this very moment. and besides, there aren't enough materials in the world to supply everybody with an EV... so unless these progressives wana join Elon to outer space and start digging for materials needed in batteries, hybrid is the only solution for the mass market. Battery technology have reached a cap for now. Electric in cities and ICE for long distance high way cruising. We just don't have a better option at this moment, going all el or all ice are both too extremes. Hybrid is the balance. With more time we can replace gasoline or diesel with something else, making the next gen hybrids even better. I'm making a hybrid bicycle now, with over 300 km range.. I still check behond me when manouvring etc. but it's so good I don't do nearly as many standard rear obs, which is the whole point, more time facing forward. Worth remembering as I have pointed out to a few, being strapped into a cage doesn't make you safe. You are less likely to die in a crash than a biker, but it still happens. 7:33 #10 I have a solution for you. Add mirrors with cameras built-in. 2014 Honda civic had a camera installed underneath the mirror. You could enable it by turning on your blinker or have it on all the time. That's what I did. The camera feed appeared on your center console screen and gave you about 1.5 mirrors worth of fov, entirely eliminating the blind spot. I LOVED that feature and got so used to it that it felt awkward driving other cars afterwards. Personally I would love to have cameras but not with dedicated screens where the mirrors would be normally. I want it in front of me so I can see the road ahead and what's going on to the left/right of my car.

One other issue with the replacement of mirrors with screens fed by digital cameras is how much your eyes have to change focus every time you look in them. When you use a mirror, your eyes don't focus on the mirror, but on the object reflected in it, which is much further away. You are effectively focussing at a similar distance as when you're looking straight ahead. When you use a screen, your eyes have to focus on the surface of that screen to see the image clearly, then readjust focus once you look back to the road. Not only is there a slight delay as your eyes adjust, anyone who wears glasses to drive may find that the screen appears blurred, because their glasses are set up to correct their eyes only when focussing at distance.

So you're saying it's a problem to look at your gauge cluster cause your eyes have to change focus? And people with that kind of vision won't be able to see the gauge cluster clearly either? Sounds to me like those camera mirrors are the least problem to someone with eyes that bad.
@Ismalith

Mirror Screens are great, the problem is that they are done poorly. The car industry is and always has been extremely slow and anti improvement and innovation. So instead of looking at this feature and think about what it can do, can improve or how it might be done correctly, the car industry looks at it and wonders, how can we take this new feature and make it exactly like the old thing. And so you get the problem that all the issues of the old thing stay while you also get new issues that this new thing has. For example, why only have one camera on a stick? Those cameras cost less than a damn dollar, pound or euro, in production, put one in the place where the mirror used to be, directly not on a stupid standing out stick, one in the top roof and one in the rear bumper and then make a big picture of what is behind you. And then put the merged picture of all those cameras on your speedometer and side screen when you use the turning signal. You could also mark objects in your mirror dependent on how relevant they are and add some data, like to a car that comes from behind, the seconds until it is directly behind you and it's speed. But nah just put it on a stupid stick for no god-damn reason and make it as limited as the old mirrors where because new things are scary and car buyers are whiny "the past was better" little babies.

Ref camera mirror replacement cost: I had one e-tron virtual mirror smashed by another car in a parking lot (who then had to cover the damages). The replacement cost was actually less than a regular mirror due to just being simple electronics, no pan/tilt motors, no body colored cap needing painting etc. I would argue that a traditional mirror (in the incarnation they have evolved into) are far more complex than a camera. Anecdotally, the camera was still fully functional, although it needed a bit of duct tape to keep it in place until replaced.

A couple more things wrong with electrifying everything: * Electric mirrors for example use screens and cameras which both use electricity to function which eats into your battery life/range. So it is with every other electronic thing. Now, sure, the amount it wastes on a pointless thing is very small compared to anything actually driving the car BUT it still does eat into it which defeats the purpose. *Electric mirrors use screens which burn out in time. Being used in the sun, actually being in a car on a hot summer day and being constantly used- it will happen. And the replacement will be oh so expensive because it will probably mean the replacement of the whole dash at the dealership. Which in turn means A WHOLE LOT of screens on something like a honda E or MB eqs. *Electric mirrors use SCREENS (i really hate these) Which, if not bright enough, are unusable in direct sunlight just like your phone is on a bright sunny day. *Swiping on buttons and touching them without real feedback (like a phones vibration for example) takes your eyes off the road to look at what you're doing even on a steering wheel. Which does more harm than good. Basically we are told to not use our phones while driving and it is legally prohibited in some countries but: "I am sorry officer, my whole car is basically a phone, i cannot drive it without looking at a screen." Good Lord bring back the good old simple old great old cars.

can't win the argument on replacement cost - manufacturers couldn't give a stuff, it's just more future revenue being locked in. I haven't seen a car with these camera mirrors yet, but what surprise me from the video is that they don't seem to solve the blind spot. Like...WTF? If you're gonna 'improve' something, address a real issue. Do they have adaptive brightness to stop the blinding effect of those gawdawful modern headlights (not sure if they're laser matrix or whatever) - but the ones that seem to always be on full beam...or maybe that's just here in Victoria (Australia) cos we don't have to roadworthy/MOT the vehicle every year (nuts!) so they go out of alignment or something. What about extra info, like closing speed or expected time to be alongside/passed? I'd still prefer to stick with traditional mirrors, but there _could_ be benefits to cameras
@Orbit353
@Orbit353 Жыл бұрын
@@davelloyd- The cameras I've used (Audi e-tron) are better (than my eye using mirrors) to avoid blinding from traffic behind. Visibility is also far better in heavy rain/snow, where the side windows themselves tend to give very bad visibility through a regular mirror. The field of view for the camera is wider than what is shown on the screen, and blind spot objects will be notified by a blinking red frame around the image. The field shown on the screen adapts to the situation, e.g. giving a very wide image in city driving, "tilted" down when reversing, or high zoom on highways to be able to look really far back. I fully agree on the issue that moving your head, will not change what you see - although that has not caused me any issues.

Their batteries are still enough for daily use, which makes up most of the mileage most people do, but they are not range-limited like an urban electric car of equivalent price.
