I was wondering what the cheapest Nitecore Tube clone would look inside. It's functional, but it ain't pretty.

Indeed. I'm into chemistry, but I was kinda surprised that they make pyrophoric batteries Oo . Pretty funny though. The scorch mark is a bit too prominent for my taste, but the old workbench ist still way better than that cutting board from the last vijeo. The material has such a nice texture and color to it, Makes me feel at home :) .

Bridging VCC and D- on the microUSB connector is a terrible idea if you ever plug this into a real USB host and not just a dumb charger. That's a good way to destroy a USB port, as the data lines run at 3.3V, not 5V. The USB spec actually used to require protection against that kind of short, but the requirement was removed from newer versions of the spec because it's hard to do with modern chip manufacturing processes and they found that it was not a fault likely to occur (most often things short to GND). But if you deliberately short the pins at the connector, well...

I was thinking the same thing, I have a real Nitecore Tube that I bought right after Clive's review of it. They're so easy to carry around and since they also use a micro USB port to charge I can easily see someone plugging it into a laptop they're using to 'opportunity charge' it while they're busy working. The idea of someone doing that with that knockoff makes me cringe.

yep.. gotta make sure it's a pure charging cable and not a data cable. I've had mixed results in the past playing that game.. sometimes ports and chargers don't get damaged, but they act funny and don't quite know what to do right away.

There is one more marking in common: All three have the same (black) switch cover/marking. On a big screen it's obvious. In person it wouldn't be as obvious. VERY interesting as always, Clive. That things a lesson in going cheap.

I for one appreciate your zooming in on my little screens...my 5" phone or 13" computer or 26" TV. Then again, even on my 106" 720p projector I still appreciate the close-up. The last few Nitecore and Xiaomi products I have bought have come with those holographic scratch panels with one time activation codes, so you can check if they are genuine. I've even started seeing clones of Boruit head torches now, and they are fairly low cost to begin with anyway

That shorting of the Vcc and D- lines is very very bad - Vcc is 5V, D- is 3V3 and non-5V-tolerant - any controllers or hubs you plug this into are going to be having a very bad day thanks to bad/lazy design. Additionally, that "extra" pin is part of USB-OTG - it's how a host controller connected to via a micro-B receptacle to a USB cable can distinguish itself from a device controller and make the link work. What I mean is Host -> Micro-B -> cable -> Micro-B -> Device. The "ID" pin allows that to work, or more specifically allows a host connected to a host to refuse to work and allows the host to identify devices in this configuration.

Suggestion to fix the zooming complaints: I'm not sure if there is anything out there that does this easily, I know you don't want to edit your videos, but maybe there is a app that will let you "insta-zoom" to a preset magnification. Instead of scrolling in, it just snaps. Might help those who get light headed easily. But... If you can't find such a thing, I say don't shy from zooming. People need to get over it really. If you don't zoom... well, you might as well just do a podcast as far as I'm concerned because I wouldn't be able to see shit anyway. I'm sure the complainers have more screen-equipped devices than they know what to do with, and they can use another to watch if it bothers them so much.
