In this video, Dr. Milo Wolf breaks down the most recent research on pre-workout supplements. He explains what the best pre-workout is, the efficacy of creatine, caffeine, citrulline malate, beta-alanine and dietary nitrate for building muscle and improving strength gains within the gym. Most pre-workout drinks/supplements are overpriced and underdosed; by the end of this video, you'll know what to take and what to avoid to maximise muscle growth!

Sorry Milo. As a physician, “tummy upset” being the reason that taking creatine and caffeine together negated creatine benefits doesn’t pass the scientific smell test for me. I’d like to see more data that taking them together does indeed negate creatine benefits. If true, a physiological mechanism must explain it.

@nforPunishment as far I understood -> 1 - DOMS are weakly related to muscle damage. 2 - DOMS can probably indicate that you worked a muscle and it's responding to a remodeling process. 3 - DOMs are not related to performance. So tracking doms is not as useful for your workouts as tracking reps and overload.

After 20 years of training first thing in the morning regularly and trying lots of pre-workouts in my time, what I have is now this: 1/2 tspn of Himalayan salt 1/2 tspn of organic raw honey 5g creatine monohydrate (convenient time to take, could take anytime) 3 organic deglet nour dates 1 organic banana This seems to cover the bases for me and definitely fuels my workouts well in my opinion. Don't feel the need for caffeine and never drink tea/coffee so am basically caffeine free. Have used it in the past and only really seemed necessary when especially tired, otherwise felt like overkill. Been recently trying "Warrior Pump Non Stim Pre-Workout Powder". This has 3G citruline mallate, Highly Branched Cyclic Dextrin, Glycerol Monostearate, Natural Beet Root Powder (Beta Vulgaris), and L-Norvaline. Have noticed a good pump in the gym from this but could be placebo effect and isn't significant (as with most natural supplements) so is definitely not a necessity. Hope that helps anyone, happy lifting.

I believe that Greg Nuckols would have some additional context to add about creatine, you can talk to him on the next SBS podcast about his thoughts on this video. He would say that like 99% of people wouldn't need more than 3G (as maintenance), muscle size due two muscle hydration would be roughly less than 200 g both referencing stoichiometry. Also he believes the mechanism for creatine building muscle is likely not very related to the ergogenic improvements. I believe he also said the co-consumption of caffeine and creatine likely didn't effect its absorption. I think he also likes the evidence on beta alanine more or that might have just been trexler and that was much older.

As someone who has GERD and IBS, citruline malate isnt tolerable due to the malic acid component, HOWEVER L-citruline alone is very tolerable and anecdotally produces the same level of vasodilation. Does the malate actually produce a measurable result or is it neglible? Most of the newer formulations of pre workout are including just L-citruline and moving away from citruline malate ( I work at a supplement store)

Hi Dr Wolf, I'm currently a client with an online fitness coaching company. I'm in a fat loss phase and will be absolutely shredded come the end of May. From there on in, my coach will slowly get me to reverse diet and bring up my calories slowly and prime me up for a long muscle building phase. Having seen your passion and depth of knowledge about optimising every aspect of body composition, I'd be very interested in being coached by you for my bulking phase. I want to eliminate all the thinking and worrying about the most optimal techniques that are backed by science. I don't want to stress about which exercise and split would be most optimal. Could you take care of all this for me and more? I live in Birmingham, UK. Would you recommend a combined package of training and nutrition? Also, do you update nutrition and exercises based on how progress is made? Kind regards

What are your thoughts on Alpha-GPC? It’s one of the few supplements I take before working out besides caffeine that makes me feel more stimulation but I have no idea how much I am placeboing myself.
@ijmwpiano
@ijmwpiano 5 ай бұрын
Alpha-GPC in dosages above 200mg has been shown to increase acute peak force production in athletes. I notice a cognitive benefit at least with a 300mg dose. Notably increased focus and oddly color differentiation. Seems to affect my visual perception a bit. One thing is Alpha GPC comes in capsules of powder that is only 50% alpha GPC. The rest is stabilizer. I’m not quite sure if the studies take this into consideration with dosage measurements. There are also studies showing increases in growth hormone form alpha-GPC. It’s unclear to me whether or not these increases have any beneficial long term effects on muscle growth. Seems like almost any new supplement will have research showing an acute transient increase in growth hormone in lab mice. Then people want to take that way out of context. I don’t think alpha-GPC is gonna get you huge, but it might be worth trying out. Interestingly, I noticed less benefits after supplementing Choline in my diet. I figured out how to get 50% or more of the daily recommended intake through food and then filled in the rest with a supplement. My guess is alpha GPC probably won’t do much for you unless you’re regularly low on choline to begin with.

I typically consume my creatine in the morning as part of my routine, alongside 2-3 cups of coffee. Would there be potential benefits in shifting my creatine intake to later in the day? There shouldn't be. The main thing about creatine is taking it consistently and if taking it every morning with coffee means you're least likely to forget about taking it then keep doing that. It depends on the type and length of the workout. If you're going for less than an hour you might be fine but if you like do two 3 hour whole body sessions a couple times a week like I do then pre and intra-workout carbs are a big help to avoid gassing out early. Also it depends a lot on how well you ate the night before as that will determine how much glycogen you start with the next morning.

@jmass4207
@jmass4207 Ай бұрын
Depends on amount, time of day, and how much you took at other times of day. The more you use in general, the less your preworkout specific dose will actually be useful, meaning you’ll have to take even more. And overall the more will be in your system at bedtime. Any i take after about 1-2pm is usually problematic for deeper sleep phases (even if you feel like you fall asleep ok). There’s a lot to recommend to using it for morning workouts only and cycling off using it at all on days where you do not work out to stay sensitized. At the very least stay away from runaway taking more and more and more for the same effects.

Do we build up a tolerance to caffeine, and therefore pre-work out is a waste after a few days/ weeks ?
@alexa.1546
@alexa.1546 5 ай бұрын
Yes you do. So try to consume as little caffeine as possible during the day to maximice the effect in Training. You can also try cycling caffeine, for example No caffeine during a deload and then ramping Up the dosage till Peak weak. One week of no caffeine will clear out all build Up tolarance.

Since I do whole body 2-3 times a week I minimize or avoid caffeine entirely on rest days to mitigate this.

I love that 0.1 grams per kilogram creatine dosing. Anecdotally I found that I did not notice an effect from creatine until I doubled the dose to 10g daily. For reference I weigh around 105 kilos.

It doesn't "melt", like many solids it just dissolves faster in warmer liquids than cold ones. The temperatures that would affect the molecule are much higher than anything you could safely drink.

Exactly since you're supposed to dose it even on rest days. I avoid pre-workout that has creatine as they use it to jack up the price and I already own a big tub of it anyway.

I avoid pre-workouts that have creatine as since we're supposed to be doing maintenance doses of creatine daily I already buy and take it separately so why pay extra for an ingredient that I already own and complicate things further by having to remember which days to not take that morning dose of creatine?

Idk this video doesn't sit well with me. It feels like trying to find problems for the sake of finding problems and forcibly trying to make it seem like this is an issue that scientists have figured out that others haven't. People are obviously taking a preworkout for energy and the pump. Caffeine does the job of the first one ; I don't see a point in saying all these good things about caffeine and then trying to discredit preworkouts which literally have the same ingredient. The creatine argument seems completely pointless since you can obviously use both of them at different times of the day and get the benefits of both. Its not like creatine being good somehow makes caffeine not worthwhile. The citrulline malate discussion is also really weird. No mention of dosages and for some reason is being analyzed with 1RM as a proxy....for a pump ingredient....That makes zero sense to use that as an informative piece of evidence and even then it still shows improvements in half the data set while going even in the other half. A proper analysis to try to disprove the function of citrulline would need to at minimum be looking at blood flow/vasodilation, not at 1RMs. In a similar sense it was super odd to talk about beta alanine and then use fat free mass as the metric of measurement?? I don't know who this is targetted at but that's a completely pointless narrative. That's like me saying,"ibuprofen is useless because it doesn't cure brain cancer'. The metric of analysis is totally disconnected from what the ingredient is meant to do.

I typically have caffeine in the morning at about 7:00AM right before workout and drink it throughout my workout, then have creatine at about 11:00AM.
