Wow, this video hit 5K views in like a month. I really truly wasn't expecting this to get more than like 200 views in a year. Thank you all for liking it, viewing it, commenting about the sample pad, etc. I've got more essays planned out on synthesizers, general music tech, all sorts of stuff. Cheers, and may your samples not exceed 2MB.

The inverted values thing is strange. Some expression pedals have a polarity switch, but you prolly woulda seen and tried that. You might be able to go in and invert the TRS output. I’m sure you could test that first with a TRS polarity inverter patch cable. And if that works just skip the opening it up part, unless you want to brush up on your soldering skills 😉

If the expression pedal takes a regular TS instrument cable, you may be able to reverse the ground and hot wires to reverse the midi values. Maybe worth checking out!

My 2 cents, the expression pedal might have been designed with the concept of it functioning like a HH choke, but for other parameters. Could have it control a filter on a synth voice, or the like, and pushing it all the way would reduce the assigned parameter. i can see someone having pitched this to make using this easier for those with more of a "drummer brain"

Those bottom 3 pads only make sense if they can be used for triggering rimshots, (does it even register simultaneous strikes between those pads and the ones above?) or cross-sticks. But if aren't acting as rims, then they look like a huge pain.

It's important to note that the Nord Drum is not a sampler pad, but a synthesizer. You can't even load samples into it. One of the only interesting things the DTX has is you have a full GM-bank available on other MIDI channels, so you can use it as a sort of convoluted General MIDI sound module.

I also have it. I don't really know what I was thinking when I bought it, probably I liked the idea of having 12 pads to use and being able to hook up external triggers. Didn't get that much use out of it, but I have noticed the extensive MIDI implementation and thought that it was kind of neat - it's cool to hear somebody is making a good use of it.

One of the coolest things about Yamaha is that they’ve had a long history of unparalleled Midi implementation. For the Few who are patient enough to figure it all out. They will be blessed by the Magic of Real time as well as Automation potential hidden inside. The QY700, RM1X, and RS7000 sequencers are some of the most in depth and immediate options to explore. As the central brain to interact with the array of Yamaha‘s legacy
@Jinji11
@Jinji11 8 ай бұрын
And I’m making this point because it’s still difficult to do some of these things in a modern, digital audio workstation. Even with the electron devices with some of the best sequencers on the market or with Sequencer, it’s double or triple the price the Yamaha is still king of Midi. I’m currently working on synchronizing the RM1X with a vintage Korg digital recorder with Midi MMC and MTC. Korg has great Midi as well, because they were owned by Yamaha for many years. Thank you for sharing the passion for Midi implementation charts. Lol

I have one of these, it has excited me and confused the f@#k out of me since day one. The menu is one of the most confusing things you’ll ever have the displeasure of trying to figure. Now I take it out the cupboard where it’s been living rent free for at least the last 6 years just to see if somehow I’ve gained an alien like intelligence since the last time I tried it, but as ever after several hours of life losing time and getting nowhere it goes back in the cupboard usually with a few curse words of never wishing I’d laid eyes on it, but… I’d never sell it cus for some absolutely obscure reason I really like having it around.. I’ve come to see it as a bit of an ugly girlfriend that I once drunkenly had really good sex with, I feel I shouldn’t but it’s right there, there’s no one about and it’s just too tempting. So now I’m going to go talk to it again see if we can pick up where we left off and maybe this time we’ll get somewhere … I’ll just have a few beers first….

it really depends what you want a sample pad for and you can always make stuff work! I know Alesis and Roland have made cheaper smaller pads (and I've heard pretty good things about the one-shot dealies Roland has made) but the cost is usually relating to the pad's ability to withstand abuse. I really really wanna make a video about that pad tho!

I've had a dtx multi 12 for quite a few years - it's limited but still cool - 4 layers for example. also most drums/percussion are a fraction of a second long (a hit) so i see why it works like it does. you can also play it with your hand/fingers like congas/bongos the ipad editor is not bad and it's free. it also has a general midi synth inside it. BTW have you bought the Yamaha FGDP-50 -yet? it's a ton of fun.

Truth be told I'm not sure if there's a sensitivity setting or not, I know there's one on the DTX-Multi 12. The crosstalk issue was very much a product of sawdust/dirt piling up inside, but I don't know why the one pad just decided to activate no matter what.

@@NintendoSixtyJorts they are horrible to program from the pad itself… horrible. You get used to it, but it can take forever… I still use version 3.5 and am in no way as advanced as you are, but I believe it can layer 4 notes for each pad and can do up to an 8 note sequence per pad. The pad is an force sensitive resistor, meaning you can press and hold the pad and it gives a continuously variable pressure reading until you remove the pressure. You can find them cheap and just upgrade the version from alternate mode. Totally worth getting new pad surface, too, because when they break down, after 15 or 20 years, they get brittle and flakey. Old, weird technology that looks like Mickey Mouse… This little chat might make me do the upgrades… Great content, by the way, man! Enjoy your day!

Yamaha should have just marketed this as a MIDI controller lol I'm just here trying to process how this is 64mb while the sample library that came with the AW16G recorder in 2002 was 250mg on CD and the internal storage was 20gb with an optional 40gb... a device still unkillable to this day and much smaller. You just wipe out that hard drive every 15 years and re-install the OS... it's somewhere on Dijonsomething forum or whatever obscure place.
