Ian Watkins was the lead singer of the highly successful band The Lost Prophets. The band saw great success, touring internationally and releasing an album that sold 2.5 million copies worldwide. However, the band members eventually became concerned about Watkins's drug use, and staged an intervention with him. Watkins then checked into rehab but later disappeared during a tour to do drugs, causing the band to use a friend for vocals and ultimately leading to Watkins's dismissal. All this would pale in comparison to what was about to be discovered. Despite his initial image as a good-natured Baptist minister's stepson, Watkins was later exposed as a manipulative and evil person who used his fame and influence to exploit vulnerable individuals for his perverse pleasure. He was charged with many horrible offenses in 2012, which resulted in a lengthy 35 year prison term.

As a Welshman, I've never warmed too much to what was a local-ish band. Watkins always come off in interviews as a twat and people I've spoken to have described him as an utter prick - and that was before he was charged. I used to work with someone with links to the prison service and apparently he's missing some teeth nowadays. I can only hope someone inside performed a national service and removed them using blunt force

A true story to lighten the mood, I used to live in Cardiff and a few months before Watkins got arrested I was in a nightclub called Bogiez (which was the local rock club). Also in there was a guy called Magzy who played guitar for a few of the local hardcore bands. Watkins walks in and then out of no where a slightly inebriated Magzy lunges for and beats down Watkins. A few years later we joked/theorized that Magzy had a premonition of what Ian had done so got his shots in early.

I have a 4 year old girl, thinking about if something like this happened to her....let's just say the police wouldn't have a chance to arrest them. And if I found out they knew and was lazy and did nothing.....they would pay as well. Kids are defenceless, they can't protect themselves. They depend on adults to keep them safe. Once you become a parent this kind of protective thing happens where when you see someone who can't defend themselves being hurt you feel the need to step up regardless of who it is. This breaks my heart and I pray these kids find some kind of peace.

The Police have through their inaction and dismissivness, their ineptitude and arrogance, aided and abetted Watkins' abuse of those children. Like in any organisation, the integrity of its function relies on the personalities staffing its services, the Police is no different, the statutes, laws, procedures, evidence, requirements for a prosecution, all of it was in place, everything necessary to investigate, arrest and charge Watkins and put him Infront of a Judge and Jury in a Court, was there, it was just a "personality", a particular mindset, which kept that from happening.

@@LoveAngelesMusic considering that he was sentenced to 29 years in prison, with eligibility for parole after 2/3 served, in 2013. He could be out in as little as 10 years time. I'm not aware of any further time being added for his attempts at grooming a young woman from prison in 2017, although by rights he should have had more years added to his sentence because of this. Due to the fact that he's clearly not showing remorse or rehabilitating considering the grooming behaviour while incarcerated, I am hoping that it proves to the parole board that he's unsuitable for parole, in which case he would be in his mid-60s by the time he's released, assuming that he's still alive by that time. The guy has proven himself to be a truly disgusting individual with absolutely no sense of morality or conscience and shouldn't be allowed to see the outside of the prison walls ever again.

Start Something was one of my favorite albums ever back when it came out. My very first band even covered "make a move" back in 2005... I liked it so much that I tried to find some worth in their following records in denial of how hard they sold out and got boring but it was such a shock to find this out. I saw them live mere months before this news dropped and even I could notice the extreme disconnect between him and his bandmates. For the first time since that news dropped all these years later, a couple months ago I tried the whole "separate the art from the artist" thing and see if I could enjoy it again but nope. I felt gross the whole time. Especially since I myself have a daughter. Ian did his fans so dirty. I don't believe that his bandmates knew though.

Speaking strictly from a musical angle, Start Something is one of those rare albums where every song is good and the album flows perfectly (a la Dark Side of the Moon, Pet Sounds, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Not in the same league as those albums when it comes to the strength of the material, but in terms of flow it measures up). Afterward, Lostprophets basically sold out to the teen scene and never were that good again. There is no defending Watkins. What he did is abhorrent. But I will defend The Fake Sound of Progress and Start Something in a few ways. Watkins behaviour took a dark turn AFTER the band achieved mega success. And most importantly, those records required the creative input of all members of the band to create. Watkins could not have done it on his own. What I would like to see is if someone would be brave enough to fully re-record Start Something and upload it to KZfaq. Like some people have done with St Anger to improve the sound. If Watkins voice was not on the recording, then I'm sure many original fans who were there at the time, like yourself, would be able to face listening to those songs again. A creator named Narokath fully re-recorded Rooftops and uploaded it, and the response he got was overwhelmingly positive. It made a song that meant so much to teens of the 2000's listenable again

Michael Jackson was found not guilty. There was no solid evidence against him, just circumstantial and allegations made by individuals. In the case of Ian Watkins he had two terabytes of child porn and multiple electronic correspondence and two Co defendants. He has never shown any remorse for his actions and actually never accepted he did anything wrong. He makes Michael Jackson look like a monk! I was a massive fan of Lost Prophets but I will never, ever listen to them again. The money I spent on cds, merch and gig tickets enabled him. He is truly vile and deserving of nothing more than castration and the rest of his life in jail.

They got pretty big, wasn’t into the later stuff, then years later hearing about this happening. It was so violating, years of this man’s voice in my ears. Does anyone have any insight on why? Was he abused? It’s crazy how he’s like the ultimate predator, doesn’t look at all like the average pedophile. Jesus it’s like he was in the most perfect position for his sickness.
