I finally understood. Christine learns that Spock is "not right" and that she is not part of his future. She sacrifices herself for Spock's destiny and takes Korby as a consolation prize. It's noble. It's very James T. Kirk.

I used to watch Star Trek growing up on BBC Two's repeats of ''The Next Generation'' and never watched since but the other week i was flicking though Facebook videos and the open song came up and it resparked my interest in Star Trek. The next day i went to HMV to buy some Star Trek Blu-Rays including Strange New Worlds season 1. Im loving every minute of SNW and definitely have a crush on Captain Pike and Ethan Peck's Spock. The opening song is my most played song on Spotify at the moment.

I won’t disagree with what you found wrong with it. But I LOVED this episode! Perhaps because I’ve already accepted, for myself anyway, that this is a different universe from the TOS that I first saw in early 70’s. It was simply fun to watch and see our characters “theatrically” in something so different. So joyous, I was laughing not at it, but with it. And SPOILER ALERT: That moment with the Klingons. 😆😆😆😆

I loved this episode and can't really understand why some don't. My degree is in theatre and I have done a LOT of musical theatre in my life and these songs fit right in with how musical theatre is organized. For me, this episode and the LD crossover are two of the best and most fun episodes of any Star Trek series. Fight me. ;)

I haven't studied musical theatre, although I have done film and theatre since my teens. The fact that it was so much like basic musical theatre is exactly the problem. This isn't musical theatre, this is goddam Star Trek; the godfather of science fiction. It deserves better than basic musical theatre. Buffy managed it, this did not manage it.

Absolutely correct. As a 65 year old I've watched every Star Trek episode since 1966's original and this was the WORST episode ever. I've never cringed at a Star Trek episode but did that throughout. And here's the thing...I like musicals and I like the Buffy episode where everyone sang but Star Trek has rules. This was like a slap in the face to real Star Trek long dedicated fans. And I had just finished rewatching Babylon 5 for the second time with my wife. That made me think have I been wrong all these years about Star Trek being great?
@jenniferhawkins90203 ай бұрын
Or the best...they can all sing!
@Eric-170110 ай бұрын
Sadly I think you totally misunderstand the whole episode. For instance, the lighting doesn't change because within the framework of the show the characters KNOW they are acting oddly and singing. Spock's solo, "I'm the X" is a perfect fit for his character, both in music style, tone.and lyrics. He communicates his feelings (which is unusual and caused by the anomaly) using a framework of concepts that is comfortable for the character and it's low-key and perfect for Spock. Contrary to you I think his song paid perfect tribute to the character. The same can be said for Chapels number. I didn't see her as being a bitch. Instead her song was another demonstration of La'an's warning about a security threat. Chapel was being forced to reveal thoughts and feelings that would otherwise be governed by tactfulness. It's clear that the vast majority f the actors are not trained singers and dancers so the shows numbers were tailored around that fact, and I thought that it worked far better than I expected. I give the episode a 9.5 out of 10 and suspect that along with the LD crossover will become a top episode of SNW, if not all of Star Trek.
@allmousemedia10 ай бұрын
"The lighting doesn't change..." is not an acceptable excuse. It is stated within the story that the ship is running on the rules of a musical and they are able to demonstrate that it's running on those rules during the finale. If the rules are in effect, the lighting and camera work SHOULD change.
@Eric-170110 ай бұрын
@allmousemedia with all due respect, perhaps it's YOU that doesn't understand the "rules of musicals." As someone with much experience in theatre, as well as a degree in the field, I can assure you that the only "rule" in musicals is that they express themselves primarily in song. There are no other "rules." No lighting rules, no camera rules, no rules. I agree with you that the Buffy episode was great. Buffy pulled off their musical episode within the framework of the Buffy show as a whole. SNW just did the same thing, and just as well. They aren't the same, nor were they intended to be. In the end, we can't really compare the two because the only thing they really have in common is that they told a story through song. It should go without saying that you get to have whatever opinion you want about the episodes, I just encourage anyone to try to simply ENJOY the episodes, oft times, in spite of any shortcomings.
@allmousemedia10 ай бұрын
@@Eric-1701 No, no, no. You can’t claim “no rules” when the episode *very distinctly states* there are rules. You can’t have it both ways.
@Eric-170110 ай бұрын
@allmousemedia ok. Sure, Uhura says that it is following the rules of musicals. The "rule" is clarified as people singing when "their emotions are so heightened that words won't suffice." That's it. That's the extent of the "rules" clarification. During the rest of the episode we can infer that the anomaly is causing people to sing, and at times dance. What we DON'T see, at all, ever, is the anomaly controlling the ship. Even the music itself seems to emanate from thin air (as opposed to the comes system). So, we are told, pretty clearly, what the "rules of a musical" are in the context of THIS episode - and it doesn't include control of the ship (the lighting systems).

This is the first time we get a decent look at Engineering. And I have to say it fits the theme of the episode in that it looks like a fantasy version of the real thing from TOS. That is not a good thing. But let's get to the brass tax. As near as I can tell this was their attempt to have an episode like The Naked Time where everyone's vulnerability is shown to the audience. While I think that everyone in the cast did a passable job at singing this episode didn't land for me. First, despite the Klingons, there was no real threat here. (In fact they really nerfed the Klingons. I may never be able to look a Klingon in the eye again without laughing. Silly silly Klingons.) People sang about their insecurities. No one has died or is dying. No real harm is being caused. Just a bit of embarrassing moments. Second they've been talking to each other about their insecurities all season long. Often times at the drop of a hat. These moments aren't earned. We already know about Uhura's parents for example. And Pike's commitment issues. In the previous episode Kirk talks to La'an about his father and Uhura about her parents moments after they've met. Totally unearned moments. Finally they commit the worst sin in music for me, the repeated phrase where they sing the line and then immediately sing that same line again. And they did so at the end of almost every song. 🎶A private conversation, a private conversation🎶. I can't stand that even from my favorite band of all time. At least Steely Dan only committed this sin once in King of the World. Which is a song about survivors of a nuclear holocaust! Which could actually be relevant here if while singing people started neglecting their jobs or walked off due to embarrassment. That might make for a good threat, especially since it is fleet wide! Now if you'll excuse me I'm going back to sleep. After listening to King of the World.

My question is, why try to do an episode like this? It doesn't fit in Star Trek. It is like they are just throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks. A musical doesn't make a good Trek story. It was a bad idea. I will disagree that it is the worst Trek ever, though. The worst Trek ever, in my opinion, was earlier in the season when they made Spock completely human; and, he couldn't act Vulcan despite still have his memories of acting Vulcan. So humans taught him how to be Vulcan. Nonsense. Complete rubbish. This series is going out of its way to destroy the best character in Star Trek, ever. But, this episode was rubbish as well, but not quite as much (but almost). And that stupid Klingon singing scene was just the worst sequence in the whole episode. If they were to have them singing, it should have been Klingon opera, not some contemporary sounding song. Something like that would be fine in a parody, but not on supposed real Star Trek. I can't even give this a warp factor 1.0. It is lucky to get a rating of thrusters in spacedock.

Musicals are deceptive in their complexity. As a child, musicals were just random songs without reason. As an adult, I'm in awe of the amount of work required to make a musical work. Songs that don't fit the narrative or he characters are usually the result of rushing to meet a deadline or limited budget - or both. Strange New Worlds is a strange case where the first season was a throwback to classic Star Trek, but the second season has, from what I've seen, taken a wackier, comic approach with hit-or-miss results. Stuff like Lower Decks protagonists Mariner and Boimler travelling back to the 23rd century and meeting the Enterprise crew, I'm okay with. Time travel stories are common in Star Trek, so it makes sense for the leads of the love-it-or-hate-it modern Trek show to team up with the cast of one of the two well-received modern Trek shows (the other being Picard Season 3). Subspace Rhapsody? Watching Klingons burst into 2020s inspired R&B? Right episode, wrong time to do it. If they saved it for Season Three or Four, the bad reaction this particular episode is getting wouldn't be as bad as it is, but the fact is that Star Trek fans have been dealt a raw deal this past Subdecade of Hell, so this isn't gonna help matters. Personally, I don't mind it, I won't mind watching it and the other comedy focused S2 episodes when I watch SNW, but I can understand the backlash and why people don't like it. This is one case where they should've saved it for later.

This was REAL??? OMG. Obviously, every new series tries to bring on newer, younger viewers, but why do they insist on doing it with a middle finger in the face of the older fans that grew up with the original series? You know, the people who made the franchise into a multi billion-dollar industry. They seem to be catering to tweens and saying F-you boomer to everyone else. I'm Glad I've never watched Discovery, Lower Decks, SNW, Picard etc. Star Trek was "Wagon Train to the Stars", now apparently, Star Trek is Pimp Mobile to the MTV music Awards.
