Good info Bob. I have some of the stick on thermometers on older tanks, but have never been able to read them. Having used thermometers for several decades, I find those that are held in place with a magnet to be as accurate, and convenient, as any. The most inaccurate are the cheap battery powered digital. Those are fish killers. I compared readings from three in several tanks and all three were different, by a few degrees, in each tank. Threw them away. Have a great weekend Bob!

hmm, I have been using the stick on thermometers for a few years now and compare them to internal thermometers and have found them to be very accurate and reliable. Don't buy the cheap stick on ones.

I never bought those "stick on " thermometers. I never can read those stick ons anyways. Lol I have always have glass therms in my tanks and use a digital thermometer that I throw into the tanks and turn it on. Can't remember the name of it but I bought it off Amazon a year ago but it's always been pretty accurate. Great video topic ! 🤣 Do they come with Wi-Fi!?😂😂💀💀

I never thought about using a digital probe thermometer, great idea. I use the glass type in my tanks and the thermometer gun for water changes.

I must admit that I use the round stick on thermometers on all 4 tanks, but I’ve also got a temperature gun (the last one you showed us) that I use. I’ve found that there’s only about 1 degree difference. I have the glass ones that I use for temperature matching new water when doing my water changes.

I’m using a combo; glass floating ones and have the gun. Like you pointed out the gun style I found will give a median reading when pointed at the tank. So I read lid off into the water with that one

We used to have those stick on ones back in the day and just like you said they are not accurate by any stretch of the means so we stopped using them and then i went to the metal ones that hang on the top rim of the aquarium and they worked pretty good for a while until the clips that held the glass tube rusted off and the tube would fall off so after that I pretty much just been using the suction cup glass ones except for in my cichlid tank the fish would always smack into them and shatter them so for those tanks I have a battery operated digital thermometer that has a wire that suction cups onto the inside of the aquarium and those work quite well only the suction cup doesn't really hold and you got this loose ugly wire in the tank but I love the digital readout.

Thanks for the video Bob. I wish the stick on type worked better because The digits would be easier to read for people with bad eyes . LOL. I use type that has the magnet on the outside of the tank and The actual thermometer goes in the tank. It’s the JW Fusion Smart Temp item from Amazon. They seem to do OK and are fairly consistent although I don’t think any thermometers are that great. Although I don’t think this type will work on large tanks because the glass is too thick in the magnet might not be strong enough.

Thanx. Came here for a specific answer and i got it. Of course it was common sense but i wanted to be 100% sure that i couldn't do it before i fully decided not too. Definitely dont want my betta sucking on left over residue from the adhesive. Edit: i have 3 aquariums. 2 dont have a thermometer and the one that does its the yellow glass one with the red line and goes inside the tank with a suction cup. My other 2 aquariums (1 tank 1 bowl) are 1gal each so im doing research in the best thermometers for both and exactly where they should be placed for best results.

I use both the IR thermometer and the probe type thermometer.I have found that the bulb type thermometers can be as much as 8° off.the IR and the probe type thermometer that I use are within three tenths of each other. Thank you for the update.

I have found the stick on ones do suck. I had them on my beer conicals for fermentation and learned the hard way. Doesn’t surprise me aquariums are the same. The old floater is all we ever use! Enjoy the weekend!

Appreciate the video and the info but one question does that cooking thermometer give an accurate reading of all the water in the aquarium I know most of the water in them should be the same temperature but it isnt always since have you ever had a problem with the lower half of your aquarium being a different temperature then the top of the aquarium

I had forgotten all about those stick on thermometers. Agreed though I had them and hated them. I have a heat gun somewhere but mostly just use the glass thermos and I have lots of them due to someone sharing a deal on them once🙂

I just got Boyu submerged digital thermometer, for my 10 Gallon aquarium. It's not active now, but I'll see when the batteries come to guess if it's working well or not. How much should the temp be? My heater is set on.

I use the heat gun. I've also used digital thermometers that have a probe which suction cups to the inside and a small battery powered read out that you can stick to the outside. They work pretty well but the suction cups aren't the best and the batteries don't last long enough.

I haven’t had any recent luck with Marina glass thermometers. After a couple months , the suction cups lose their hold. I moved to an infrared temperature gun for my tanks and haven’t looked back...

The stick on's are the best never had a problem reading the room temperature then reading different they only read the tank temp for me But here in the UK we don't have AC in doors so the thermometer is not fighting an outside source Anyone that has a glass tube in an aquarium that probably has poison in that's weird..... 🤔

I have a digital thermometer that came with a heater I ordered Amazon. I've spotted checked it with my digital laser Infrared tempature gun and it matches up. I'm not a fine 9f the probe wire and I'm considering getting a cordless for my tanks next.

Wow your worst is my go to. Wonder if different stick ons are better than others. Used stick ons on 20+ tanks for the last 10 years never had a problem. I've tested them and they have never been off by more than -1 deg from actual water temp. The ones I use are much thicker than the one u showed in the video. Although I use them mostly to detect catastrophic temp failures.

So I have the same cooking thermometer and I love it but I also have a stick on thermometer that's been on my 10 gallon for over a decade and it actually shows the right temperature...

i bought two of them strips today :P , well my tanks heaters have a shut off type of thermometer inside them so this is just for me as backup to check if heater is broken or working then i walk past, i also have suction cup one inside but i have to remove it from tank to read so that is gonna be my water replacement pre heat checker before i dump water into tanks Also i live in europe so we dont use AC :P , also found out my room temp is about same as my water warmth so why do i use heaters haha

LCD thermometers intended for other uses are usually very accurate. The “junk” made for aquarists, are not. I got back into the hobby about 12 years ago and it’s amazing what passes for acceptable products these days. From filters to even the substrates.

I am new to this pet fish thing and I just got to stick on thermometer with my heater that I bought. Looks like my fish is not very healthy since I put him in a bigger tank so I hope he makes it through the night. I had him in a half gallon bowl pretty much for 3 months change this water every 2 days without a heater. Come home from work today and brought a heater and it came with a paper thermometer

I use the digital ones you can find in box stores in all 5 of my aquariums. They’re pretty accurate and batteries last a long time. Works out great for me for under $10. I found a pack of 4 on amazon for $15

I've only had succes with digital thermometers. I also had these stick on things however they would show 28 degrees celsius while the water would be 25+/-. Also noticed some HUGE differences between the old school thermometers? is that because they work with alcohol? I ended up with 1 thermometer saying 30 degrees while the other said 18 degrees, same bucket of water... While these digital thermometers are never more off than 0.3 degrees which is acceptable.

What are the dimensions of the tank behind you?

There is a somewhat easy way to check if your thermometer is accurate (But also a little dependent on surrounding air pressure). Ice cubes in some water, and let it sit until some of the ice melted. it should read 32F. And if it goes up to it, boil water and it will be 212F. Sometimes there are differences on both sides, so bias a little down.

We have had a fish tank now for 5 months or so and we have had 2 glass thermometers that adhered wit a suction cup. They are cheap enough but two of them suddenly cracked on top! I was very careful when cleaning the tank and when removing them and putting them back. Now I have bought a digital probe one. Does anyone else have this experience with the glass ones?

Thermoworks RT-801 is hands down the best (imo). Has a HI/LOW alarm and it's super reasonably priced. Not well known in the fish game, but you'll thank me later..

My husband uses those LCD thermometers for home brew. I use a bbq thermometer. I tested the water with 3 different thermometers ( I've got crap everywhere) got the average, then tested with the BBQ thermometer. It was really accurate. If all else fails, dip your finger in the tank, walk outside , hold your finger up. It won't give you the temperature, but it will let you know what direction the wind is coming from. Thanks Bob

Did anyone else not realize that you’re supposed to stick them in the aquarium? Put it in when there’s no water, fill it up, then it won’t fall off and will read water temperature. They work if you know how to use them.
