It's that time of year when lawns and home yards can be stressed from heat and one of the worst things you can do is to make it worse by scalping and mowing too low. Here's a quick tip on proper mowing.

Great instruction! The same is true of grass as is for trees and hedges; thicken the base and increase density by trimming just the tops. That thickening and increasing will shade the ground from baking and retain moisture.

I took over a few family members' lawns and "repaired" them and they think I am some lawn guru. I literally fertilized them one time, and mowed them often on the highest setting the mower would go and their lawns TOOK OFF. Proper mowing is by far the MOST important and impactful thing you can do to your grass.

I just wanted to say how much I like you. I try and mow twice a week. I hit my head a month ago and mowing really effects my concussion. It sucks to pay someone. I am paying a fifteen year old which is rare to find a kid that will work. I love handing him the $30 bucks. But everyone here is the same. You like it just so. I am an older single female on my first real year of lawn care. I went from a crappy, crabgrass filled yard to the best on the block because of people like you. Exactly, point-on. 0:55... this is how my lawn looks compared to my neighbor's. They leave it grow too much and hack it back, while I raise my deck and only "trim" the top during the summer months. Never remove more than 1/4 to 1/3 at most.

I raised my deck all the way up since the first mow this season. Spring is so short and sunmer heat cranks up quickly in Minnesota. I dont lower the deck until later fall as i gradually prepare it for winter. It gets long and shaggy sometimes but so thick and green. Worthy tradeoff.

Here where I live in Minnesota we just got some decent rain yesterday probably not enough but it's been so hot and dry here that I haven't had to mow my lawn for almost a month. I usually mow my lawn at about 3 1/2 inches at least that's what the setting is at on my toro mower. I may or may not mow my lawn this week. I think I've only mowed my lawn twice this whole summer so far that's how dry it's been here.

Great video on how and when to mow, i have bermuda grass and mow it once a week short but not enough to scalp it. Sometimes i mow twice when i start seeing the inflorescense (antennas). I water at 4am for about 8 minutes everyday to avoid evaporation which gives it about 1/2 inch each watering. Its been in the 100°' s for the past 23 days and the grass is still very green and healthy with no weeds.
@lazygardens
@lazygardens Жыл бұрын
Bermuda does better with longer watering times, less often. You want the water to go DEEP, and the roots to follow. Your 8 minutes a day ensures your lawn will have shallow roots, only be damp in the top couple of inches, and be likely to suffer in the heat. Look up "Bermuda Grass Watering guide" and the "tuna can test" and see what you should be doing.

My homeowner experience and action with a lawn in the Midwest. .. you know there's about to be heat wave and no upcoming rain u mow before the heat. U actually stress your grass more by mowing over the top of a stressed out half dormant lawn. The more u stay off it the better. Then when those rains.finally come. Go out the day before cut that grass and throw some organic fertilizer and 3-5 days after the rain your lawn will be looking good again. Your pre emergent you threw down in the spring will take care of most weeds. Now if u have a lawn that gets cut at 0 inches like Ryan and have and irrigation system and the knowledge about the anatomy of grass and your lawn looks like a baseball field then yeh listen to Ryan

I've decided that with my ground and grass conditions, clay under an inch or two of topsoil, 4 inches is optimum. If I try to cut it shorter, then it quickly burns up when it gets hot. Usually mow once a week during the season, twice a week if it really rains a lot. May not mow for several weeks if it's been dry and the grass has gone dormant. My neighbors a street over keep their grass putting green short, and seem to get away with it, I believe due to better soil conditions.

I agree it's not fun to cut the grass on a hot day.The summers here in southern Canada are usually 25C and humid a very hot day is 30C usually mid August. It was 30C for three weeks in early to mid July and really humid about 90% so a "humidex" aka feels like of 35C. I'm soaked after cutting a small lawn. More often but not too long and not too short. Meanwhile neighbours scalp theirs to the dirt, so many weeds it smells like turkey stuffing seasoning, and it looks better than mine lmao

The WORST thing you can do for your lawn is to think you've got the ground crew at Augusta National maintaining it - for free - about 10 hours every day, seven days a week. And that's the humongous mistake I made when I installed Tifway 2 on my front lawn decades ago (Zone 7), because it has been a NIGHTMARE of high maintenance. (I could write a book.) The stuff is like a sickly chihuahua that has to be taken to the vet about every three weeks. Granted, it was a gorgeous stand of grass when babied like that hot, young new wife - but like that wife, VERY temperamental when it didn't get it's way. But again, you're the HOMEOWNER - not that well-paid crew at one of those Florida ball fields making that stuff look all pretty. The BEST thing you can do is install Centipede - if you live in area where it "feels at home" - such as I am. I've had it in my back yard for decades, and it's the polar opposite maintenance-wise from the nightmarish hybrid Bermuda experiment. NO irrigation - ever, NO expensive pre-emergent herbicide - ever, NO weed infestation, NO fertilizer. It thrives in partial shade, and resists scalping! ALL the things that Tifway varieties AREN'T! And here's the kicker - it just floated in of its own volition and settled where it felt comfortable - which was my back yard. Didn't plant one seed of it. Soil - hard as can be - no problem. It makes for a very pretty yard (plenty pretty enough) - but not as beautiful as Tifway. (Would you rather have that hot high-maintenance wife, or an attractive, LOW-maintenance wife?) I've gotten gobs of ooh's and ah's from folks gawking at my Tifway lawn, and I've immediately WARNED them about the down sides - which are many. Resist the temptation to think your lawn is like a tee box, and adopt some common sense - which I didn't do. Resist the temptation to believe sod growers that will tell you that this great new X-whatever variety is the greatest thing since sliced bread, because it probably isn't. Save yourself some grief and go with a LOW maintenance lawn - such as Centipede.

Wisconsin lawn here During the heat and drought of summer… and grass not growing much, so you want to still mow a couple times a week? Or let it go for a couple weeks, with little growth and cut it high? I seem to let it go for two weeks, but the weeds grow faster but I thought longer lawn and less stress of cutting during these extreme conditions would be best. Ha! I mow mine when I feel like it and that means it could be a Foot Tall before I do. I leave the mower at Max Height so I don't hit the Stumps.. Only thing I have to deal with, is the F'n Slope and Slop.. Back to Front it drops 10ft and All My Good Top Soil Washes Away... Then the Slop is from the Water Table only being 3ft Underground and they yard is constantly Wet. You Can Sink up to 3in in some spots... So I have to Wait till it's Dry Enough To actually mow. Then when I do, it can take up to 2 Days just to mow Half of my Half Acre Lot.. Because of a Bad Back and High Blood Pressure that Get Me Winded every 10 minutes or so and have to sit to rest and recatch my breath for 15minutes...

QUESTION: My back yard had very thin grass and was easy to mow just two years ago. Now, it has very fast-mowing grass and is incredibly thick and difficult to mow. I suspect this is because I put a ton of grass seeds in one section where phragmites were cut and I put tons of dirt and lots of grass seed. I think this thick grass gradually spread from west to east, because the wind naturally carried the grass in that direction. I want my yard to have crappy thin grass that doesn't grow fast again, because it was WAY EASIER to mow back then. How do I make this happen?

It’s not just ‘cheat’ short cutting. Consider a grass. It has root, a thin white stalk, and then the green wide blade (that we call grass). If you go long between cuts, the blade (grass) gets tall, but so does the shoot. Then when you mow, even at average height, you cut off most of the blade, exposing the soft vulnerable shoot. An over grown lawn should be taken back down to manicured height in stages over multiple days. To leave some of the moisture rich protecting green blades of grass. Rather than just quick cutting and exposing the tender vulnerable shoots. Another concern is a dull cutting blade. A sharp blade will cleanly cut the grass opposed to a dull blade which smashes and rips the grass. Picture a blade of grass as a piece of writing paper 8”X11”. A sharp blade at full RPM will slice the paper across the 8”, leaving the smallest ‘wound’. A dull blade will shred/smash the paper, not cutting 8” but instead making a angled 14” tear from side to corner. The greater the exposed ‘cut’ area on a blade of grass is greater area to burn.

I've followed this tip and my lawn still struggles where it gets full sun. I try and water some mornings but I think my soil has some hardness/clay issue here in the northeast I may try and aerate this fall and see if I can improve getting the water to really settle in. I tried a liquid aerate recently and i think it actually helped a bit it seems to be growing and getting a bit greener. I'm struggling to get rid of wild violet that is really taking over most of the sunny parts of the lawn. I finally got it to wilt away in most spots but man that stuff is hard to get rid of...

Get a soil test done, the nutrients could be off or the pH of the soil could be causing some problems. Watering should be done right around the crack of dawn. An easy way to tell if the lawn needs water is by stabbing a 6" screwdriver into the ground, if it takes some effort to get the screwdriver in then it needs to be watered. Another thing to check out is the thatch load of the lawn. If there is a lot of thatch built up it can suffocate the roots of the grasses. Dethatching should be done in early spring or early fall, and then follow this up with some overseeding. It should really help the lawn out. Finally depending on where in the NE you are at it could just be due to the dry weather conditions that have been prevalent the past few months.

@@kolt4d559 ya i got a soil test done a year or two ago and followed the recommended stuff they said to put down, lime for the ph etc... except the "capacity to retain nutrients" was low and they weren't specific on what to do for that. I'm going to try dethatching and aerating this fall.

thank you Ryan, I've been mowing at 4" every week. I do have a question though, although, I thought I had this lawn maintenance down, lol I mow at 4" and that I feel is a good height for the summer I'm still getting some clover, and I just saw 2 dandelions, I just get the leaves but I just pulled out 2 full grown. what post emergent can I use? I already put 2 applications of dandelion preventer in the spring and 2 of crabgrass preventer. Can I use weed stop or something to spray?

I can't consistently cut my grass because when it rains, I have to wait 3 - 5 days without rain for the yard to dry up enough to cut. By the time it's finally dry enough, the grass is tall as hell. Even at the tallest setting, I would be cutting over half of the height of the grass blades, amd the grass would still be in dire need of a cutting afterwards! In a perfect world, I would cut it 1-2 times a week. Im reality, that's just not possible! I would have deep nasty rutted tracks all throughout my yard and have my lawn tractor bogged down to the axels if I did!

never water mid day, always water before 9 am or after 7 pm, all you’ll do if you water mid day is waste water, the water is going to evaporate from the sun so fast it won’t give your grass and soil much benefit at all to soak it in

There's also syringing which is watering during very hot but also DRY periods during the day to help cool off the grass. It doesn't do much in humid conditions though.

All you need is a timer during a drought with a cheap sprinkler and hose. I have a dual zone timer during drought, I set them up Sunday evening. I water 23 minutes 3x a week during a drought and it helps tremendously. The timer makes it much easier to be able to leave it and forget it.

@@ryanknorrlawncare It’s up here in the Pacific Northwest, it’s going to be hot for about 3 days and pretty low humidity. I live along the coast of the Atlantic ocean and i buzz my damn lawn down till dirt almost flys so the salt air will stunt the crap out of it. saves me gas, mowing time and allows me to enjoy other activities... Whenever anyone asks why my lawn always looks so good, the first thing I tell them is that I mow every 2-3 days. No matter how much you water/fertilize, it's never going to reach its potential if you "shock" the grass every 7-10 days by removing 3/4 of its length.
