Considering how long it already takes to start actually playing a new game these days (getting past the console menu plus sitting through the title screen animation plus often excessive opening cutscenes and sometimes a tutorial section), having to download updates for a game that just released can really feel like a slap in the face. Just pressing start to play is one of the true joys of older games.

My sentiments exactly! It used to be rare that a game would be built with overly long cinematic and things of that nature (I’m looking at you Metal Gear 3) but it seemed like it used to be the exception to the rule. Mine is kind of a double edged sword, and likely a subsect of what you've already talked about: the enormous growth of game publishers. Due to the growth of the community becoming larger and more casual, with companies and investors stepping in to get a hold of the vast amounts of green, the bad I see, is how greed by higher ups, has devalued games as a whole (and yes I'm well aware it is a factor which has pushed some of us, myself included, to play older games instead).

Nintendo not even considering buying Rare is a big one for me. They've been wasting their IP under microsoft, every platformer under the sun is getting a remaster but the people running Rare somehow don't think there's an audience for Banjo ( tho I have to admit, I think they know perfectly well there's an audience and they just don't want to work on anything from their past because they're hard headed and the new team is trying to forge their own path ) and Donkey Kong hasn't been the same ever since. Something feels missing even from the wonderfully crafted Retro Studios games, and I don't just mean Kremlings and Animal Buddies. But yes, I will agree, the advent of online gaming has had some pretty bad effects on gaming. It feels like every game has to be elligible to qualify as an "e-sport" to be worth a damn these days and it sucks.

Sony was determined to enter the video game console industry no matter what. They were even trying to partner up with Sega at one point but Sega realized that they were going to take control of their partnership. I still don't get why Nintendo didn't just end their deal with Sony and not pursue CD technology for now. Did they really think that Philips could make a good console? I guess they were willing to take a chance as long as they didn't have to deal with Sony being in control. Sony wisely used their immense financial resources to put out a developer-friendly console to attract all the best 3rd parties and buy some developers too. Sega's internal struggles really killed its competitive edge during the life of the Saturn. Not that many good games were coming out from them specifically. They didn't release or they put out lackluster games of their IPs like Shinobi, Sonic, Streets of Rage, and their sports titles that put them ahead of Nintendo with the Genesis. By the time Dreamcast came out, the only thing keeping them afloat was some good games from them and they had acquired a decent amount of developers that were putting out great games like Capcom, of course. Dreamcast would have died a lot sooner without Capcom's commitment to it. Most of the games I had for Dreamcast were from them.

Totally agree with your last point. The abuse of Internet connectivity has absolutely ruined modern gaming. Micro-transactions aside, it’s the constant patching of incomplete games that I find the most frustrating. I wish they would just release different iterations like they did back in the “retro” days. Then players can decide which version they would like to play. Here’s a concept: if a game is too broken to be released, then don’t release it.
@markula_4040

I agree with the last point but not with 'release different iterations like they did back in the “retro” days'. Hell no. Get that awful idea out of here. One game, one version. its not the abuse of connectivity as much as the westernization of video games as a whole that is the true culprit. Video games thrived as a Japanese phenomenon. American capitalism sucked the life out of it right around the time Xbox came out. @Nathan_H1gg3rz
@Nathan_H1gg3rz Жыл бұрын
@@sonicmania9993 Mega Man 11 harkened back to a retro style Japanese Megaman and was a clear attempt to salvage the franchise. Their attempts to westernize the franchise have failed and the blue bomber has been discontinued (for now) The creator of mega Man left Capcom about it. It was kind of a big deal in the video games industry, you should look into it. Capcom, like other Japanese companies, almost floundered because of their failed attempts at westernization and being forced to compete with Western development studios. *Article about capcom's westernization:* "We all know and understand that today’s video game market is becoming more and more global. There are still some titles that are exclusive to Japan (Yakuza 3 comes to mind, as does Afrika - until recent announcements) which might seem strange because Japan is losing its prominence as a leader in the market. The UK is now a bigger market (second only to North America) and the industry as a whole has Westernised. I remember a time when if you wanted some of the greatest games you had to import them from the land of the rising sun. Now it seems like they are importing games from western markets and trying to pitch them to a Japanese audience (Grand Theft Auto IV is published and distributed by Capcom in Japan). Even the mighty Hideo Kojima and Konami altered the feel of the Metal Gear Solid series with the fourth instalment so that it could be played by a more wide-ranging, traditionally western audience. They made it play more like an action shooter and less like the tense, stealthy thrillers that the previous MGS games had been. Capcom have publicly stated that they want to move their game design to a more Western standpoint but what do they really mean by that? I recently played Dead Rising on the Xbox 360 and was shocked at how little I could find to enjoy in it. I was encouraged to think about why I didn’t enjoy it (plenty of other people thought it was great) and I found a quote from Capcom’s Head of Research and Development, Keiji Inafune, in which he expressed surprise that the game’s western audience had immediately spotted its Japanese design roots. According to Inafune, they had attempted to design it like a Western game. This is when it all fell into place with me. The reason that I really didn’t like Dead Rising (and for that matter Resident Evil 5) is because it was a Japanese game design with a clichéd and simplified set of Western characters. The menu systems, disjointed save-game points, the over-emotional character interactions and the now-infamous run-shoot mechanics are the primary things that singled out Dead Rising and Resident Evil as Japanese game for me. Back in my PSX and PS2 days I loved Capcom design. I used to be a huge fan of Resident Evil and I still believe that Japanese game design (especially at Capcom and Konami) is the most imaginative but only in small flashes. For the most part the Japanese designers seem to have found a few mechanics that do what they need them to do and they have entrenched those mechanics in a game series."
@BlankSpacePub
@BlankSpacePub Жыл бұрын
@@markula_4040 I think you’re missing my point about the different iterations of games. The example that comes to mind would be the different versions of Street Fighter 3. Third Strike is generally the go-to game for tournament fighting, but the earlier versions are preferred by *some* people owing to the differences in fighting style. Rather than just update those versions and erase the play styles of the earlier versions, some people might prefer to access those earlier versions. This is actually not that controversial a proposal, and indeed exists in the digital world. (Just as an example, Street Fighter 5 for PS4 was ruined for me when Capcom did their first big update. I was a Rashid player, and they basically ruined his play style for me. I would much rather play the original SF5 launch version of that character than have to play the ruined one they crammed down my throat.) I hope that provides you with a little more context, but if you still think it’s a bad idea, to each their own.

@@bmwolgas I do agree, but people also like novelty and fun games. Nintendo's hardware has been quite far behind everyone else for their past few consoles but people still love it because the games are good, plus the console would be great for indie developers so would get lots of great games. But yeah I expect the crowd that just loves the best graphics and FPS games with online multiplayer, etc., wouldn't be into it, but there are still a lot of us out there that could still make it a viable product even if it won't sell as many as the other consoles, and it would be a lot cheaper to manufacture too. To piggyback on the internet connectivity issue is the fact that some games these days are now not even on a disc or cartridge, but instead the physical media acts as a key to download the full game. This makes it hard for people that live in a place with terrible or no internet (these places still exist, trust me) to even play they game they already bought, let alone will make the physical media completely useless when online servers completely shut down for a console. (While that last part really has yet to happen, it stands to reason that it will at some point in the future, even if it's over a decade from now).

Worst things would have to be the shift to Army FPS being the "in" thing during the XBox and sci-fi stuff during that same period. I pretty much went on a decade long hiatus because of it. Actually, I lost a lot of appreciation for playing games during that time which still resonates today. The lifecycle of the 360, I didn't get one until near the end and I didn't feel left out for not having one. That feeling vanished with the PS2. Instead, I got mine for a few titles like Far Cry 3and Tomb Raider. Although they both let me down in many ways as well. I ended up with an XBox One twice but only played one of those Forza games briefly once. It had auto dropping speeds and all sorts of stuff that made me feel like I wasn't in control in the first place; just having the ability to move left and right like some sort of Android game. The market is stale again, outliving the "Minecraft era" where everyone took that inventory and crafting idea to put it in their game. Now we're in the remake/remaster phase and I still see no reason to give anything a shot. I have a PS4. Tried it a couple times over the years but none of it really matters and everything I've seen from all consoles are things I've had on PC forever that I never cared to try. The only surprise I get out of it all is how much worse it seems to get. But then just as I go to laugh about it, I find that people are actually interested in this stuff. So I've just come to the conclusion they'll never be fun again and others will encourage the downward spiral. At least the hardware is interesting to tinker with. Well, even less and less so with that, actually.

Not to mention all the collection bragging I see. I have game collector friends that give me grief for not having a wall of games or boxes of consoles. I just don't see how me having a wall of games I won't ever touch is what makes a "real dedicated gamer".

I love online connectivity but I 100% agree with you. Patches bother me a lot. The game should work on release, or we should get to immortalize it's bugs with laughter or scorn. Additionally, it really bothers me that there is no easy way to just... get a game in the form everyone else played it in the modern era. It's more complicated than getting a cart. People played it at different patch levels or with different seasons going on. ... I like it when experiences are more shared, even if people are playing at asynchronous times in history.

I also wish that Sega was still a healthy console creator and while I don’t totally agree with your criticism on Online/Internet integration into games, you make a lot of good points. Also, the Sega Dreamcast had online connectivity and it was pretty cool. I’m not sure that the internet connectivity is the problem nowadays, just the myriad of problems (many of which you listed) that AAA companies have created and expanded upon to exploit modern gamers. For me, the worst thing to happen in gaming is the over proliferation of Open World games and adding RPG elements to so many games they don’t work well in.

the wiiU being not successful was the worst thing in my personal view. My family was never really into gaming they just got me a wii because it was popular at the time, but by the time the wiiU came out I still wasnt quite at the age I could find out about and therefore ask for these things, so I never ended up getting a wiiU. I did get a DS and later 3DS so I was fine in that way, but I cant help but feel like I slightly missed out without the wiiU. I know everything is coming to the switch now so I can play them now, but I wish I already had played some of these games. Like pikmin 3. gotta get through it now so I can play 4 that just came out. 5:41 im so glad nintendo didnt fully die due to the wiiU. I have had fun playing games online. My personal favorite for this has been the Monster Hunter series. From Tri to Generations, the online community was the most friendly, helpful, and supportive I’ve seen. The games also had a system of quests which some were meant to be played with others, and some were meant to be played alone. You were able to tackle the tougher online quests alone, if you felt up to it, but could get hundreds of hours out of the game without it.

Another thing that is the worst in Video game history is the lack of knowledge with Retro games if you grew up in the 80's or 90's. Games costed a lot more, you were buying a said physical copies of games at a mom & pop shop in the 80's with little to no selection in those days & renting the few games at a convenient store. Then in the 90's it was better but still had to buy them at a Toy's R Us or Walmart. You would rent said video games at a said Blockbuster or a rental store like that. Very limited & you had to bring the games back to said rental stores. Before the PS1 You are playing these games dying a lot because you had 3 lives & 2-3 continues. Most games you had to beat them in 1 sitting. When you are a kid compared to an Adult, those games are a lot harder. You have to remember gaming was a lot smaller then. Not Everyone owned a said console like a NES & then a Sega Master System etc. There's no internet to look up which said games are good or bad. You had to rely on a said friend or the box art. No youtube guides, so if you were stuck on the game you had to buy that specific magazine or call the hotline which costed money. I owned a Sega Master System because my brother bought 1. At that time I wasn't allowed a Nintendo because we already had the 1 console. So to play Nintendo I had to go to said friends houses to play the few games they had. Super Mario Bros 1 that released in 1985, I wasn't even playing it at that time, Never heard of the game in 1985, I played that in 1990. When I played that in 1990 I still didn't know what it was but I knew I liked the game & then wanted a Nintendo. I would say that would be the worst part of gaming is lack of knowledge & games being sold in a said store.

For me it’s when developers get acquired by big publishers. I understand sometimes it’s out of necessity to keep people employed and sold to consumers to make bigger “better” games. But after a few releases post-acquisition new “features” start to creep in, old founders or designers leave to make their own studio, and a noticeable lack of soul and creativity becomes apparent.

Then a lot of the people that made Rare great also left, so Microsoft essentially lost a very talented studio too. The acquisition was also an early sign of things to come. The extinction (or near extinction) of middleware development studios is one of the worst things to happen to games for me. Some failed to compete and collapsed, others got consumed by much larger publishers usually to be stripped for parts and IPs. One of the better things to happen for games is that the explosion of indies is starting a second wave of middleware games as the smaller indie studios grow or merge under smaller publishers. So that's pretty cool!

Payment to upgrade your character is what I find one of the worst things to come to gaming. My son asked for money some time ago to just upgrade his character. Back in the day you had to earn points playing the game to get stuff within that game. Now you don't even have to do that, you can just pay for it without the quest of earning it. Some games don't even give you the chance to earn something, you have limited time to PAY FOR IT ONLY. Where is the fun in that? I stay away from those games & my son has learned to do the same or so he says.

Personally, I'd consider Sony to the least customer-friendly, the most hostile as a whole to the entire industry (grrr... I hate that term...), the most selfish in general, and their current decisions are clearly influenced by their market power and position (oh yeah, and their Head Scumbag, Jim Ryan).

@sonicmania9993

Yes, I was going to post something very similar. I would argue that Japanese publishers STILL make 70% of the best games, just as they have ever since Space Invaders. The biggest JP games still get big sales/market share worldwide, and the JRPG and JP-big-action genres have had a renaissance in quality the last 6-8 years, resulting in a lot of popular and well-regarded games. But smaller and quirky Japanese games are kind of a dying breed... and the kind of creativity and risk-taking we saw from Japanese developers from the mid-80s until the early-00s is hard to find today. The worst side of westernization for me though is the moving of Sony's Playstation division to California, resulting in both PS and XB being very western corporations whose main goals are things like user engagement & retention, creative monetization, and market dominance via online service games & subscription services. When companies in Japan were leading the industry, most of those things were important -- but always less important than developers being creative and making a ton of fun videogames for us to enjoy. Both Playstation and Xbox are heading in bad directions, and though their fans may be satisfied for now ... I wonder if they still will be in 10-15 years (with Sony's huge push toward service games for increased profits, and Microsoft's focus on acquisitions and flooding Game Pass with big, kinda popular, kinda mediocre games). The Japanese third-parties and Nintendo are left to hold the fort, with indies filling in some under-represented genres. I miss the old SEGA, and I miss the old Japanese-led Playstation. [[My second-worst thing is the fact that nowadays many games take 5-10 years to develop, because of modern graphical expectations and the complexities of modern programming for 9th gen systems & hi-spec PCs. I wish games were made more simply, with gameplay and fun-factor the primary concerns.]]

@@sonicmania9993 My biggest gripe with the westernization of the video games industry runs deep, people don't realize just how committed the Japanese people were to video games. They literally had organized crime (Yakuza) driving them to produce quality material and it shows. There are reports of developers who lived inside of their development studios and spent all of their time working on projects. They would sleep next to their computers (The game Tenchu for PS1 was made this way) It's fascinating and poignant. Men sacrificed their family lives and health to bring us quality entertainment. Weird take, but the death of traditional handhelds(fairly recent occurence) is a sad, sad turn for me. With how advanced tech is now, there's no need to use outdated hardware for handheld consoles. They're almost on par with home consoles, negating the need for unique hardware. Thus, negating the need for handheld variants of all our favorite franchises. We probably won't ever see handheld specific entries of Zelda(Links Awakening, Minish Cap, Link Between Worlds), no MGS Peace Walker or Portable Ops etc. It's a very cool experience being able to play both a home console release, and a usually more unique and quirky handheld version that's still rife with fresh, brand new gameplay ideas.

I reballed the ps3 2 times but still it was dying. i decided to get a new one and i got to download these games again costing a lot of my time and network space witch was only 100 gb a month. Then i had a playstation plus subscribtion on the 4th generation and my son decided he had no desire for my login id account on it. He changed the online id. That way all my games that i downloaded were also gone. I called the playstation center and they were listening to me but could not reverse the situation. While i was in that phone call i heard that my old account on the ps3 was erased as i didn't log in for over 2 years. I was in a renovation for my house and didn't had the time to pay attention to my ps3 so i thought my life is on pause for gaming and get to these games again later. But no the time i was offline sony decided to let go of my account. I lost thousends of dollars for buying online and not physical media. I was a long time frustraded for this and now to to some degree. But eventually i will play them in emulation i guess. But it is such a loss of money and time in the end. I think the things that make me saddest in gaming are the missed opportunities. Like that the Switch didn't carry forward the stereoscopic 3D screen that the 3DS had (I really loved having a stereoscopic display), or that the GBA only had two face buttons so even though it got a lot of SNES ports they were often pretty hard to play. There is, of course, the N64 and cartridges. Also the TG-16 and its many delays to get to market (NEC was trying to get it to the US way back in 1987 but it didn't get here until 1990 and by then it wasn't nearly as impressive).
