As someone who's gay and read several webtoons, I know there's a low bar for this stuff. And while I'm personally not interested in poly relationships, it's an interesting concept to explore in a comic. But that being said, this webtoon is extremely cringey and full of trash writing. And I'm sorry for saying that for anyone who likes it, it's just my personal opinion.

man, this webcomic made me from gay to homophobic really quickly about the artstyle, I must say that it is quite decent and probably one of the few things that is good about this webcomic (if there is anymore good things about it 💀💀) the characters are just so stereotypical that it makes them incredibly boring and too dislikable, you already know what to expect from them

As someone who can draw, I think this webtoon's artstyle is good. Not great, or beautiful or anything, but it's consistent, the colors are nice initially (before the overuse of the pastel palette in the comic ruins this entire palette for every comic ever), and... yeah that's about it. Props to the creator for the artstyle. But not for the fetishizing art they have made in the past, or the BTS rule 34 that they made when one of their members was still a child, or whatever.

The setting for this feels like when high schools are writing fanfiction that takes place in college, but write it as just 'high school 2' because they don't know what college is actually like. Like "oh they're college students!" but it's carefully tailored in a lab to be relatable to its audience of teenage girls.

Hope you had a good holiday!!!! (gonna go read the other one now because if you suggested them together they must be on the same tier goodness, right?) (two months later: I did in fact read Castle Swimmer after writing that comment and I was absolutely obsessed. Back in 2020 (or 2021? I honestly don't remember at this point) I had read the entirety of Boyfriends out of curiosity since my friends had introduced me to Webtoon, and in all honesty, I feel like the webtoon's biggest offense was getting so popular. There are a lot of cliché and stereotypical things on webtoon and Boyfriends is just one of them. the controversy behind the creator and the fact that the characters are intentionally resembling stereotypes make it a bit worse than most, but it isn't that hard to find things similar to it. the problem is simply that the webtoon got MASSIVE attention to the point of having its own ads, got an enormous amount of fans and supporters, is constantly advertised on the app itself, etc. it's just not worth it

The sad part is that the art is actually very pretty and it has a certain style that makes it like cute and it gives a relaxing slice of life/ romance vibe (on its own ofc) and ig it really could've had some potential when it only needed some little fixes since the plot wasn't too bad because its just kind of "im a lonely teenager and I want a bf" which would really attract teenagers and it could be a veru cute romantic story but yeah. That's mostly all I had to say since I came to talk about the art because I'm an artist and I look forward to making comics as well and this video was really funny keep it up!

I had read most of the comic until like last year, only recently I discovered how much people talk about it in a negative way. As an artist I like the art style, it’s simple and cute with nice colors, the idea of making a story about a poly relationship is also interesting but in the comic nothing really happens. It wants to be cute slice of life comfort comic and that ok, still it needs some conflict and character growth, like making them start as stereotypes but then show they are far more complex than they appear. Showing the actual struggles of a poly relationship and how people react to it would be a create way to keep the story light (no super heavy stuff) but interesting.

this feels like the author doesnt understand the difference between romantic and sexual attraction. Romance and sexuality, while they often go hand in hand, arent always that way. Ive read the first season of boyfriends, and it really rushes through to the romance part of it, and it always ends up in a sexually suggestive situation. its perfectly fine for them to want to skip straight to the romance, but they handle it poorly. We barely know anything about the characters before they are thrown into conflict, and that makes it really hard, at least for me, to get invested. The character sheets at the beginning, while a cute little thing on their own, kind of show how little thought went into fleshing out these characters, so it makes their worst traits stick out like sore thumbs. Thats part of why people hate this webtoon so much. And yes, ik that the author is a gay trans man, but that doesnt mean they are inherently good at writing gay romance. I am a gay trans man myself. Them being gay and trans doesnt change the fact that it makes a lot of other gay people really uncomfortable, myself included. It doesnt change the fact that its written similarly to gay romance thats made for and by straight women to fetishize gay men.

The best webtoons are the thriller ones in my opinion. Bastard is my favourite one so far. Everyone I’ve recommended it to has said that they love it. I love it so much that I felt empty after finishing it in one sitting. Sweet Home is another great webtoon and it’s by the same author, though it’s more horror. I’m currently reading Dear X and so far it’s also really good, but kind of confusing lol.

I don't read webtoons and since this video didn't cover much of the series, I can't say for sure, but I don't really understand what makes this so terrible. The plot is loose but to me it seems like it's supposed to be disconnected, ala cartoon episodes without an overarching plot. I think the art is nice to look at too. Can someone who's read it explain what exactly makes it so bad because I'm not sure I'm catching on? (but I also don't care enough to read all of it myself.)

it's been a while since i read it but. in my opinion, it isn't that bad, if you look at it for what it is (like, definitely not one of my favs but idk). i'm a deep-and-complex-stories enjoyer first and foremost, but sometimes you just want to read some silly story with no overarching plot and simple characters, and that's what "boyfriends" is. if i'm not mistaken, goth is a self-insert of the author (or was it nerd?). knowing this i guess he just wanted to write this silly comic about him getting 3 boyfriends, and it suddenly got super famous. and i'm pretty sure most people's problem comes from that: that it gained a lot of popularity for how incredibly simple the story is. i think it's just not everyone's cup of tea, especially if you're looking for super developed and fleshed out romance; it's like looking for combat on animal crossing. it's more episodic than anything, no place for complexity. but yeah imo the main valid criticism (not that you can't dislike it, but saying something is objectively awful just because it isn't what you're looking for seems kind of eeh to me) is the same that there is with a lot of (gay) webtoons: it comes across as veery fethish-y. i don't want to speak a lot on that bc i'm not poly or gay, but i can see how some of the things can be annoying and misrepresent those people. hell, it creeps me out from time to time. but yeah basically that, silly comic that got too famous, sorry for writing this much lol

The art isn't too bad, though I hate slow storylines. The whole comic could have some potential, but it seems slow and there's not much of a plot. Edit: I just wanna say, there's nothing wrong with enjoying the comic but I'm just saying that it could use A LOT of improvement. If you enjoy it, that's fine. I will say the artstyle is kinda nice, even simplistic artstyles can be appealing.

Well there's hardly any good rep, and a lot of the time gay stuff tends to just fetishize and idolize homosexuality, this comic being no different, not to mention it tries so hard to look and be anime and yaoi that it just flops horribly The artstyle is ugly, the writing is poor, and the only thing it has 'going' for it is that it's gay and poly Also it's pretty obvious the webtoon is just the author self inserting themselves into a comic about having several partners, so by nature it's already flawed

This is just a slice of life and imagine if the characters were stright but everything else stayed the same. I personally don't see the fetishlisation of gay people/relationship but the exaggeration of character tropes that could be done with people of any sexuality But again many things are subjective and no opnion is fact

Also, it's a little obvious the nerd character is a self insert (just look at the artist's sona at the end of the comics) and that gives the vibes of the entire webtoon just being some guy fantasizing about having 3 boyfriends. I'm ambiamorous myself and the idea of having several boyfriends is appealing but it's not because they're men, but because they're people I genuinely like. If you're going to make a romance novel for a very underrepresented LGBT subject at least do it right and not chalk it up to daydreaming

I mean.... I dont really get the massive amount of hate for it? The comics existed for a loonggg time on the author's twitter as short one shot newspaper type comic strips which eventually turned to a webtoon but they still keep that concept. It's NEVER meant to be a story driven comic or have a lot of depth to it. It's just.... a romcom where the characters interact and do goofy shit together in a few panels. It's definitely tumblr-esque and they do have names actually i don't think the jock and nerd tropes and others are that bad since there's many other comics and games that does that kinda stuff. Like being a goth or prep isn't anything new especially in movies they do those tropes a lot so i just personally don't see the problem other than the usual stuff ppl say like ''its cringe'' but I don't think that's a justifiable excuse. If anything there's way worse stuff on webtoon that doesn't come close to boyfriends in terms of bad writing and toxic relationships. Just my opinion.
