A true cult-film indeed. I was about 7 or so when I first watched it at a friend's house. Not knowing the title of it (neither the English or the Norwegian), we just referred to it as "the black car". The chases were reenacted dozens of times when we played. I actually have the movie on DVD and VHS. LOVE the soundtrack. Thanks for the review, brought back memories. And yes... it IS a good bad flick. :)

@johnholmeswebb8162
@johnholmeswebb8162 6 жыл бұрын
Jovan Mitrić 💯% correct. I saw this like ten years before the Crow, and when I saw it, I was like, "this is just like the wraith, except the girl didn't get killed, and the Crow came back looking like himself.
@CorbCorbin
@CorbCorbin 5 жыл бұрын
Except his girlfriend wasn't killed. They weren't in a major city, causing chaos on the night before Halloween. Crow doesn't use a car, and isn't all happy about digging himself out of the grave. The Wraith takes more from High Planes Drifter, than the Crow. No Sarah, no powers like Eric Draven, aside from not being able to be hurt, and Wraith can change his human body, while Crow just puts the paint on. The Wraith literally turns into energy that disappears, then can take the form of the car, or motorcycle. Sorry, but the Crow is influenced by supernatural revenge stories, but not The Wraith.
@CorbCorbin
@CorbCorbin 5 жыл бұрын
Also, there is no Metal in the Wraith. It's all Poppy crap, or instrumentals. *Ok. The Wraith is so metal. I was wrong. Still doesn’t mean the plot of Crow took from it. Watch Pale Rider, from a year prior, and you’ll se one of the two Eastwood movies The Wraith was ripping off. Even Eastwood was basing those characters off of ghosts from Scottish and German folklore. Boy, one Ozzy song, and it’s sacrilege to say it was poppy music. Bonnie Tyler, was big metal. Idiots

@@AndreMcHenry That would have sounded down right weird in the 80s and pretentious nowadays. Looking at my name, i am poking fun at the trend that was started by a german motor company ("Das Auto") and maybe even be predated by the german movie "Das Boot". An no it is not about footwear ^^ Let's just say it would not have been able to attract a lot of germans. Also, the decission was made by german TV stations. The movie never went to cinema in germany and cassette tape rental was reluctant to buy a stock of anything that hasn't either proved to be successful on tv or scored big on ticket sales.

this movie is amazingly underrated, the shots were excellent, the car chases were great, the only problem I had is that Charlie Sheen was mostly like Gary Stu throughout the movie if you don't include the back-story and it ends quite quickly, not much of risks involved in the plot, granted The Crow is still superior when it comes to the narrative aspect, setting, pacing and the characters but I still recommend it wholeheartedly, definitely not an Oscar material but it's an excellent B movie material

Two things I loved about this vid: You included the clip of Gutterboy about their constipational rights, which is f'n hilarious. You mentioned how the Wraith's engine was "from the future", which, from the perspective of the movie being done in '86, actually turned out to be true. Most car companies have downsized by now to lower capacity inline-4 engines with turbos, like the actual Dodge M4S prototype had :|

No offense N.Jacobs but if you think Starship Troopers "sucks" and is a "guilty pleasure" then I think perhaps you aren't looking at it the correct way. It is a fantastic satire of both the military industry and a media complicit in the death and destruction of young people's bodies, to name just a few. Verhoeven's films can bury the satire deep however in Starship Troopers it's all right there in front of you. Do not feel guilty about Starship Troopers - but please go back and rewatch with fresh eyes. Recommended Reading : www.alternateending.com/2019/07/starship-troopers-1997.html

Both this film and The Crow borrowed the coming back from the dead for revenge theme from the much earlier film "High Plains Drifter" starring Clint Eastwood. For much of that film, Eastwood's character is hinted to be the brother of the man who was brutally murdered by a gang. Looks nothing like his murdered brother. It was made to seem that he came to avenge his brother's death against both the gang, and certain members of the town who contributed to the death by doing nothing to help. Only at the very end do we learn that it's the murdered man himself. Back as an avenging spirit, in human form and with a new face. It's subtle. But as the dwarf in the film openly says to him that he never caught his name and doesn't know what it is, Eastwood's character says, "Yes you do." He then casually rides off as a look of horrified realization comes across the dwarf's face.

During its theatrical run here in Australia, The Wraith was rated R18+ - restricted to adults 18 years and over. Probably a little inappropriate, but the MA15 (restrictions apply to audiences 15 years and older) wasn't introduced until 1993, after the controversy of The Silence of the Lambs and Martin Scorcese's version of Cape Fear.

I only saw this by chance in the late 90s, despite being an 80s kid. The only reason I can think is that it wasn't so well known in the UK. It was in the very very early hours of the morning when I caught it while channel hopping half drunk after a night out. Realising how great it was I slapped a VHS in the recorder and, obviously I missed the start, but I was able to show my friends who also hadn't seen it and thought it was awesome. We then managed to hunt down the full thing when the internet became popular a few tears later.

I love this movie. I really hope we see a remake or a sequel. Though it's been 6 years since this video came out, I don't know if the Director is still shopping around a remake. I'd like to see a sequel where Loomis returns and witnesses the same event from the 80's happen over again, but with different kids of course.

This came up in the recommendations. To make some points on the film. The concept was that he was a dimensional crosser/traveler, not so much a ghost or anything. Where you see the engine in the turbo, originally they wanted it to show outer space and even have shots of the wraith in the car but instead of a steering wheel, his hands were fused into the dash.

Yeah, I lived through the 80s. We hitchhiked, wandered around without parents all day long, skipped school to head out to the mall to catch a movie and hit the food court, ride bikes all over town.... Kids today live like prisoners.
