This is Episode 2 of our 10-episode Poor Man’s Hangar Tour series. This Series highlights the evolution of the MAJOR radial aircraft engines and the best-known aircraft each powered. In this episode we continue our climb up the horsepower food chain and highlight the development and evolution of the 9-cylinder Curtiss Wright R-1820 Cyclone, and showcase its most well-known application, the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber of World War II, and honor its combat crews who paid the ultimate price. Planned subsequent episodes will move further up the horsepower ladder culminating with the 3,800 horsepower, 28-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major that powered the C-124C Globemaster II and the Convair B-36J Peacemaker strategic bomber that were both dominant in the 1950s.

Rest the souls of those lost in the 909 and Texas Raiders accidents. Saw 909 many times in South Florida.

I met and support Tim Chopp of Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation. They are doing a great job with their “new” C-54 and huge C-97. It’s a tough road these days. Also visited the L-1049G of Airline History Museum, formerly “Save a Connie”. Hopefully theses two airplanes will survive. Great job, John!

Yes, Mr. Chopp and BAHF have diligently and successfully attacked impossible tasks over the years. There is nobody left with more working knowledge of the R-4360 and the C-97 than Mr. Chopp. Once they get that one back in the air (fingers crossed), that will be it! I was a founding member of Save A Connie and last visited them (as AHM) in 2020. Sadly, their legal problems with their hangar lease may result in the scrapping of the -37C and their Martin 404 -45S. Was a flying mechanic on S-58, construction lifting. This engine gave me better feeling than the T-64 on ch53s

While I never had any experience with the S-58 like you, I've always heard that the -84b R-1820 on that helicopter was extremely reliable. At some point I'd be interested in knowing who you flew for. Around 1988, one of the StL Helicopter Airways S-58s put down behind a large shopping center in West St. Louis County after completing a lift there. I walked up to them as the mechanic man-handled a 55-gallon drum of oil into the bay after replenishing the oil tank. They were all business--without hesitation, they fired it up, with smoke everywhere, warmed it up, spooled it up, and then went straight up. I was spellbound, much less envious!

Yes, I spent time there in 1991 and 1992. One of the most interesting places in the world!

Great content, as always! And the audio quality is excellent now. It was interesting to be able to hear the turbocharger whistle in several of the clips. I know that some of the warbirds have removed the turbo to reduce engine stress.

Yes, years ago they were a client of my employer. They were owned by the employees (through an ESOP). Also, when I rented/flew planes out of Arrowhead Airport St. Louis County 1979-1980 they were based there, then they moved to nearby larger Spirit of St. Louis Airport. They flew several H-34 copters powered by 1,525 hp R-1820-84Bs. I could regularly hear them lifting HVAC to the tops of buildings in the distance--all the way from my house on Sunday mornings from all points of the compass--they often chose Sundays because there were no office workers in the buildings or in the streets. They flew the piston H-34s until 2005. They later went to S-58 turbine conversions and then Kaman K-MAX before closing their doors. J.A. Reed.
