That's how we ride in Portland, Maine. Every Saturday Morning there's a breakfast ride with mix of road, bike path, singletrack, and bushwhacking. We got riders on Gravel Bikes, Fat Bikes, MTN Bikes, Road Bikes, and Commuter Bikes. Every bike is the right bike when it's Party Pace!

Without a doubt. I finally found my Sam Hillborne in March and it has been amazing. I’ve ridden more in 5 months than I had in 30 years. And all things considered with inflation, the crappy bikes I went through to arrive at the Hillborne, and the outstanding quality, I don’t think I paid a “Premium” at all. I think it’s about in line for a vehicle that will last me the rest of my life.

Would say that diversity is key here. Folk are not all the same...personally having tried cable disk brakes in my gravel bike,after a few scary moments changed to hydraulic. All my best MTB moments were in the 1980’s before suspension.. After many years of hard tail riding with suspension forks,I am now changing to rigid forks. I always ride in Lycra,hate flat pedals. But love to see more and more flat pedal options,for folk who hate clipless! Great to see more custom bikes and there is a bike for everybody. Not just one bike fits all. We must celebrate diversity and individuality.Respect people’s choices.

I have the Hillborne and the Hunqapillar (discontinued). Beautifully tuned bikes. TOUGH bikes. They're not breaking for anything. I really like Rivendell's philosophy: head over to their website, read it over, and you'll find most of what they espouse is what 80% of the population really needs. Leave the fancy stuff for those trying to make a living from cycling (sprinting, downhill racing, etc.). The more tech you put on a bike, the more that can go wrong, especially since bicycling represents self-sufficiency. Bicycling magazines and their emphasis on racing convince you that biking for fun and fitness must be done on something that has little visual and styling appeal in 5 years time. If I arrive at work after commuting in 10 minutes instead of... 9 minutes.. so what? Besides if the bike is decent and well made, your ride performance has a lot more to do with your fitness and skill, not the bike.

I started riding offroad on a steel road race bike with fat sew ups in the '70s. We liked to 'explore', what can I say? We were often really lost and pretty stoned. The best part was the looks hikers and equestrians gave us. I think they thought we were aliens from outer space!! Now I've graduated to fixed gear and singlespeed 'cross bikes. They're more fun than should be legal! Actual MTBs are best saved for truly rough trails and the big mountains.

I'm just a tad confused. Being a child of the 80s and ridden the first generation of production MTBs, I can see why you would compare that to an MTB. And to be fair, that is very similar to the preproduction Klunk bikes, from what I can gather. You probably have a bit more knowledge there. I feel like your channel is geared toward gravel bikes and not MTBs though. So, when you say it's not a mountain bike, I get doubly confused. Modern MTBs are a far cry from the early days. @@PathLessPedaledTV there is a reason why mountain bike evolved from city cruiser cockpit to what it is now (shortish stem, wide flatish handlebard) But since the geo of your bike look like an old 80-90's mtb, having a 80-100mm stem lower than your sadle with 550-650mm flat bars would greatly improve the handling of the bike. @@PathLessPedaledTV here's a good thread about it on stackexchange. bicycles.stackexchange.com/questions/56081/whats-the-difference-in-threaded-and-threadless-headset-and-stem There are several reasons as to why the threadless headset became standard. Among those are weight loss, an increase in stiffness, elimination of the likelyhood of seized locking nuts, And just a simpler overall ownership and maintenance experience. When paired with modern fork designs (tapered 1, 1/4 to 1, 1/8) You see yet again, more advantages from stiffness and durability. The one inch threaded I feel is a copout from frame builders to push Cheap and outdated components onto consumers. I feel this way about modern steel frames too...
@PathLessPedaledTV
@PathLessPedaledTV 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not going to argue that quills are easier to maintain and swap. However, I do like quills BECAUSE they’re not stiff. Esp for gravel rides. Modern tapered headsets are too stiff IMO and companies have to come up with all sorts of proprietary suspension to counteract that. I think stiffness is overrated and a by product of sports cycling.

@@PathLessPedaledTV I work as a courier and I guess alot of similarities are to be had about the demands I have for my bikes to race bikes.
