6 жыл бұрынThe original Xbox "Fatty" controller is back. Otherwise known as the Xbox Duke controller, 2018 sees an updated release of the 2001 classic, designed for Xbox ONE and Windows 10 PCs. I paid £69.99 for this massive piece of plastic, mainly because of... nostalgia... but the question is, how does it compare to the original, and is it worth the hefty price tag? Whilst we're here let's also take a look at the Duke's story, how it came to be, how Seamus Blackley brought it back and how the original pad was riddled with design issues, leading to its paramount size.

I'll say this for the Duke: Back then, I crushed my fingers at work, and while they were healing, it was the only controller I could hold in my hands due to the large size not requiring a claw grip. I'll always love it for that.

I had the original xbox at launch, was a teenager at the time and I loved the xbox controller. no issues with it's size, shape, etc. TBH when i later got an xbox slim model, i hated that controller more.

I was 5 when the Xbox came out. I loved that controller because little me was able to stretch his hands while not even really needing to firmly grip it which was ideal for hours on end of Morrowind.

I'm sure the duke came from the dreamcast controller, even the mock-ups seemed to include the VMU. plus, some people think the XBOX was the true dreamcast 2 (search videos, but im sure you know this)

I sort of agree with you but I'd probably place the Gamecube controller inbetween the Dreamcast controller and the Duke as a sort of (un)missing link in the evolution of controllers. Although, out of the three, my favourite controller to use is actually the Gamecube one.

I honestly don't understand why people say the Duke is SO BAD. I personally love the Duke controller but I understand where people are coming from saying it's too big. I don't understand why people say it's worse than the N64 controller though!

You have to compare it to the time it was released and what it was trying to do. The N64 controller had to add an analogue controller and while it wasn't possible to reach both the d-pad and the analogue stick without changing the grip, it wasn't too bad otherwise. The duke on the other hand was just too big and didn't really add anything that the competition, like the Playstation 2 controller, had. So the duke is a worse controller than the N64 controller.

Those were great. I've had several but they all seem to suffer from the same flaw, the stick had a small tab underneath that stopped it rotating, and that tab always wore down and broke off, rendering the stick frustrating out of alignment.

Got a F710 aswell, and while it is pretty neat, it is still far from perfect considering the dpad. Atleast it is way better then the X360 pad.

The symmetry is the main reason I don't like the PS controllers.... Well, I guess it's more the downward placement, I'm okay with the Wii U Pro controller which is symmetric, but with both analogue sticks on top. On PS2 I always used the dpad instead of the left stick, the position just felt more natural and made up for it being rather shit compared to the stick.

I own 2 Sidewinder USB gamepads for my retro gaming PC, and while it's an alright pad for its era, the D-pad is just crap. I guess it's because I'm so use to a pure cross shaped pad that it's hard for me to go back to.

i never played the XBOX ...but i remember this controller...i had it in my hand just once...only one time...i never had a more fitting controller in my hands than this ...it was perfect for me...even today i can still feel it in my hands...

I need one!. I still use my OG Xbox (with a 500GB HDD and UnleashX dashboard, of course), and, while I own 4 S controllers, I always use the Duke. I was 13 when i first used the XBOX and I immediatly fell in love with it.

I might be wrong, but I thought a Microsoft put a lot of their research arm in creating the duke's design to be as ergonomic and comfortable as possible. I thought it was a fantastic controller. the black and white button was meant as a sort of options button, not really for normal gameplay. I think in part we have to remember that controller schemes were still very much evolving and not as standardized as they are today.

Its not just you. I loved the Duke Controller! It felt sooo good in the hands. I even fabra-cobbled a usb cable to use it on my PC. Getting the driver was tricky earlier on but I managed to get it working. It was the best controller I'd ever used until I stated using a wireless 360 controller later on. Seriously though, it was no bigger than the enormous, multi-position n64 controller.

I love the Duke even over the Xbox S. One reason I rarely play my original Xbox is because it's hard to find Duke controllers in good condition so I have to use the ones I have sparingly. I also love the WiiU tablet controller which is even larger. I was only a young teenager at the time I got my Xbox and I still loved the controller. I'll gladly take it over the awful dualshock line of controllers, or Nintendo's gamecube controller with its still born second analog stick.

If I ever get one of these, I'm gonna replace the trigger springs with the ones from one of my original Xbox controllers. I LIKE how hard you have to press those triggers.

LOVED the Duke. Great controller. I have big hands (I'm a big guy), so I never got on with the tiny little PS pads. This was just perfect.

User AkBkuKu here on youtube submitted a kernel patch to allow the Duke to work under Linux. if that's accepted, that means that there will be no issues down the line in later kernels for it to work there, too. this is a very good thing since you'd want this to work on say, the new Atari VCS and such coming out.

No, it's an XInput 2.0 controller. Generic HID conforms to older Windows DirectInput.

I have the new one and I adore it; the size is just perfect for my huge hands It brings me right back to the days when me and my sister played Forza 1 together (and curiously, the controller was very comfortable to us even back then, when we were 11 and 9 respectively)

I remember when I first tried a Duke, I was around 10/11 and at the time I thought it was too big. It was only years later when I got a Duke controller and I thought it was ok but the ‘s’ controller should have been the original design IMO since the Duke may have limited the audience to some extent. Still, I look at this and the only reason I’d consider one is if the display could be made to do something eg. Display health, systems stats, etc. Similar to my old G15 controller. Seems a bit of a waste to just display the old boot intro.

I bought an XBOX a *very* long time ago in the UK. We all actually really liked the original 'phat' controllers. A very good friend of mine especially liked them as they were a good size for his hands. Still got my second (crystal) XBOX. It has nostalgia value. I used to use XBMC when it wasn't Kodi. I'm old...

I mean, you'd be set to a point. If using something like Steam Big Picture, it's useless, as it has no home button. The Hyperkin Duke, while more expensive, is much more fully functional.

I never understood placing the thumb sticks in different locations. Is the idea that you're rarely going to touch the camera and should rest your thumb on the right face buttons?

But are the buttons still all analog like the original? Because that was a thing. Not many games made great use of it, but they could tell the pressure which the buttons were pressed. On PC (with 3rd party drivers) all the buttons showed up as additional axises and you could set thresholds for when the triggered standard presses.

I loved the OG Xbox and its controller when I was a kid. I remember being 12 years old when it came out and I remember saving up every dollar I earned babysitting, mowing lawns and hoarding Xmas, Hanukkah and birthday money for a year and a half to buy an Xbox. It didn't disappoint with its collection of FPS, Sports and Tecmo games, and the way its big controller held up to rage quitting at Halo 2 and being thrown across the room. I loved the Duke, hail to king baby!

As a Dreamcast owner, I can only disagree with people pinning the Duke controller as being one of the worst of all time. I definitely wouldn't buy a new one today at that price, but I remember it being perfectly usable, with my only gripe being the front button placement. My own Xbox was bundled with a controller S, but I played a fair bit of Halo using the Duke at a friend's house. It was the guest controller though, as my friend preferred the newer design as well.

Hyperkin have yet to officially confirm if you can at all control the screen via the built in USB because if you can then there would be nothing stopping a game tapping in to the controller to use the display just need to know what code to use to do so

One of my favourite pieces of trivia about the original XBox and its controllers is that it isn't black. It's an incredibly dark green. I only found this out back in the day when I decided to mod mine and noticed the plastic dust was green, not black. I really want to know if this is true of this relaunched model.

We called it the 'Bear' controller because you needed Bear Hands to use it. I liked the size but preferred the S b&w button locations.

I grew up with the original Xbox and I never found myself having issues with the Duke. That being said though, it has been well over a decade since I held it in my hands. Reminds me that I need to get a Duke controller again, only got one controller for my console anyway. I feel like the Dukes gotten kinda rare, is it just me?

I noticed a little window on some of the prototype controller designs, like it too was gonna have screens on the memory cards. Makes sense, considering the Xbox was allegedly planned to have Dreamcast compatibility.

Because I was so young when this came out I didn't read internet forums or really get a lot of feedback on how I was supposed to feel about it so I thought it was fantastic and really comfortable.

if it presents itself to the PC as an xbox one controller then to work on linux u need linux kernel 4.15 or above, which is included in ubuntu 18.04 and it's flavors

try out kubuntu, it's pretty nice lately, and the RAM usage is less than xubuntu somehow

I got a wired Xbox 360 controller to work in Mint 18 64bit XFCE edition with STEAM installed. So I would say give mint a shot if you are not running an AMD GPU because for whatever reason I could not get proper drivers to install for my low profile XFX R7 240 2GB(It's a work machine, and I just needed something cheap, and cheerful to get the job done), so again since it's a work machine I switched to Neverware's cloudready OS 64bit(open source Chrome OS), and no issue since besides sleep mode, so I use a Chrome plugin that keeps the screen on even when the system is locked, and I just turn off my 2 monitors.

I managed to pick one up the other day from my local "Game" for some reason they had it priced at £49.99 and with Shenmue 1 & 2 HD coming out I needed a new controller for my PC so I couldn't resist grabbing it at the price.

The duke never bothered me when I bought my Xbox all those years ago! Not sure it needed a comeback but sure why not eh? If it were a bit cheaper I’d have one for nostalgic reasons (perhaps an OLED-free version will surface later?) otherwise there’s always eBay for a second hand original with an Xbox to USB adapter, although I question the availability of either these days!
