The Yaris GR Gets a Thrashing from a 23 Year Old Peugeot 106 Rallye

The Toyota Yaris GR has received rave reviews, but can it stand up to the old school simplicity and feel offered by a Peugeot 106 Rallye? Toyota did a great job with this car but in terms of pure driving feel and experience the Peugeot will be hard to beat!

A mate of mine had a 106 Rallye 1.3 in Red back in the 90s. What an absolute hoot to drive. You could just barrel it into any corner and it would just fly round. One of the best FWD cars ever..👍👍

Yes. In Greece instead of Gti there was the S16.Plus in mk1 chassis there was also the xsi version also. I am not a fan of French cars but I have to admit that these little rockets were a wolf in sheep’s clothing. A proper low budget entry car for the amateurs. Especially here in Greece these cars are still running and writing times. It’ll take them anytime instead of the Yaris.

Your reaction to the 106 is how I feel every time I drive my old mx5 mk1, 1.6. 1993. So much fun within the speed limit. The Yaris is like a sports bike - it’s no fun unless you’re full ‘on it’ which is licence losing.

Older cars i say were more fun , i used to drive a 1993 Rover Metro , you would think that would be awful but it was amazing fun . like a little go kart and you felt all the road , where as nowadays new cars are too refined , you dont even feel the road through the steering anymore , its like the car is doing all the work and your a passenger not good.

@@th3b0untyhunter I very much doubt a MK1 1.6 is faster than a 106 Rallye. The Rallye has better power to weight. With a driver, the mx5 weigh's over a ton, the 106 is still under a ton with driver. I highly doubt 10hp give or take will make a difference. Plus the 106 has steelies and less contact patch, equal it up to the mx5 with allows same contact patch then the numbers will slightly increase for the pug, again out performing the mx5. (Something with 100hp and under 1200kg has more than enough power for a legal overtake) obviously it's not been safe to do the overtakes you've been trying or you haven't been in the right gear at the right time.

Well captured - the Pug is direct and alive with feedback while the in car Toyota footage accurately represents the mechanical separation between driver and car. Nope. The earlier 1.3litre car was solely aimed at winning in the under 1300cc class in Group A and N rallying. It followed on not only from the 205 Rallye but also the Citroen AX Sport, Citroen VISA Trophee and Talbot Samba Rallye. The 2nd version shown here was not commonly used as a rally car as the larger engine put it in a class with more powerful vehicles.
@ichbinb0b83
@ichbinb0b83 3 ай бұрын
It was actually as cheap with the brakes and the rims, because rally teams would upgrade them anyway. So why would the fit some brembos if they get swapped out for AP racing or why put fancy alloy wheels on it if some Rallyeteams would get speedline or oz. It was the perfect base to get a fast small Rallye car and that was typical in the 90s and early 2000s.

Well done for your honesty and telling the truth, most reviews jump on the bandwagon of ‘new’ must be better. I have driven the 106 and can appreciate your views. I have also driven the Yaris many times and appreciate its technical ability, but also feel the slightly false ‘woolly’ sensation you are describing. Just for reference, if you want the old fashioned unsuppressed feeling in a small car, try the Mini GP3, it’s a terrible road car, but I bet you won’t stop smiling, it’s a real old school approach to driving that won’t be available anymore, due to ‘safe’ ‘practical’ and modern car reviews. Well done for telling it as it is. It’s a breath of fresh air 😎.

My favorite car I have owned was a 76 Datsun 280z. The rust was so bad that only a blind man on a fast horse in the rain at a distance on a dark night would admire it. No working AC and no working radio, but the power antenna would go up and down so you could fake it for the girls. However, the rebuilt inline six, lack of power steering, ancient suspension, and teenage stupidity taught me a great deal about managing oversteer for fun. Maybe next time I will tell you about the time I took my father's RX7 out to see how fast it would go.... Great video, Jack. I always look forward to your new posts, even if I have to watch the damn commercials so you can get Ferrari parts. At least one of us gets to live the dream. Much love from Springfield, Missouri. @@Lotus.F Nice to hear. The Mk 1/1,3 Rallye was unfortunately never imported new to Sweden, but they looked cool with red seat belts (have I seen in pictures) and must have been even lighter still. Even more fun perhaps. The 1,6 is actually a quite revy engine also being a 8-valve and I found a Devil manifold that made my car even better. When Mk 2/1,6 Rallye came along Peugeot compensated in some way by only import the Rallye plus one "grandmother version". That made the Rallye sell very well in SWE for some years. All in white. True, these tiny Rallyes are so different to modern "tanks" that you could almost say it was a different vehicle. Almost.

It was pure raw driving pleasure just like rallying, so responsive due to light weight and I used to red lined it through every gear. i own a 106 gti and i have never regreted..it has more solid and precise steering wheel that is not compares to anything..vts and rallye steering wheels are the same sharp but a little lighter..i dont know the reason maybe the weight of the front that gti is 60 kilos heavier in front or in the settings of the ECU and the electric signals to the electric steering pumb..mine GTI i don t change it neither with a 911..it s my toy and the best information steering wheel from anything i have touched till now...of course and the GR is an amazing car but don t forget that it is another category with a very different chassis and geometry ,horse power than peugeot 106 rallye...very nice video !!!

Drove a 106 back in the late 90's. Front struts were buggered rattled, banged and moved about on the road but was still fun to drive. I think that's part of driving a car that people have gotten away from that something shitty with lacklustre performance can be fun and get caught up in the numbers. BTW I do have a GR Yaris and absolutely bloody love the thing!

Although the Swift's have always been relatively light, I would take that figure with a pinch of salt... most manufacturers tend to be quite imaginative when publishing these figures.

The fact that the “engine” noise of the GR Yaris is actually piped into the cabin via the speakers is enough to expose the digital nature of the car.

Unlike the German, British and Korean brands with their "off road use only" modes, Toyota (and Honda) actually followed the rules to the letter on the noise regulations like good citizens. The noise limit for vehicles will be continually reduced every year under WLTP regulations until 2032, in order to make the transition to EV seamless. :)

I have a base GR and would never give it up for Pug but each to there own. It's like a classic song done 20 years later. PS You did make some good points. I would have liked GR to be more RAW like no GPS or back seats and a version with low tech for Fun but it's 2021 and loud Exhaust. I say enjoy both for different reasons and different tastes. Plus you could always Mod the GR into your own tastes. PS Last if I could have a 90s car a R34 anyday or a old Dodge Viper. Love our cars.

Good to see you having fun. I think you miss your own Peugeot...maybe some French blood in your veins. The only Yaris of this type we might get in the US would actually be a Corolla, the Yaris model was a flop here. You are really good at doing these comparisons because it is all about the smile on your face...that is what describes the cars. I know that your experiences compliment my own...speed is always fun, it is really a car's total gestalt that makes it great, not just the power. I'm starting to look for a mid-seventies Alfa Alfetta Sport Coupe...to turn into a great little cafe racer. Not really a track car, just a car that has great soul, beautiful lines, excellent handling, and enough power to make me smile. I would enjoy seeing you revisit some of your past cars and compare them with modern stuff. Doesn't need to be apples and apples...just two cars from different eras and how they feel next to each other. I think if more of your fans lived in your part of the world, you would have an army of friends willing to help you work on your cars. Best wishes.

I think you might prefer the recent Yaris GRMN to the GR. 1.8l 4 cylinder supercharged (similar to Elise/Exige engines), so the throttle response should be more immediate. Brakes probably still over servoed though. I bought a Swift Sport 1.6 because I wanted responsiveness over performance. It's still not as responsive as my old Rover 200vi. The Clio 172/182/200 represents the decade in between well.

Remember driving my mates 106 Rallye on a country lane in North Wales , not getting any of the love you have , it was too skittish by far and unreliable in its response. One bump or camber and it was bounced off course. It was built like cardboard too. My old delta turbo IE at the time crushed it easily And was more fun. I have a GR and it's amazing,when people say it's not got enough magic it's because it has no weaknesses ,it gets from A2B in the shortest possible time exactly as designed. Character is often disguised as weaknesses in a cars arsenal.

Ive got an ancient Mitsubishi colt that has a tiny 1.1 litre 3 cylinder engine but it is nippy for what it is 11 secs to 60mph and downhill in the red zone it hit 120mph verified on GPS only problem was the radiator exploded after that so had to change it lol but 3 cylinders i say are more fun to drive , very revvy and light too

The S2 Rallye like the one you have here stayed in production 95-98 and predates the Gti which came out 97-03. Honestly the Gti is better all around but 50-60kg heavier, most of it in the front. The 16 valve engine found its way not only in the Gti but also in a "rallye" version called the S16 as a homologation special. P.S. Gear lever is shite from new but can be modified to a good level!

I think I would go for the 106 as well, though its nothing against the GR, I just think that I would be disappointed with the high expectations that everyone has given it, and having owned some very nice rally reps (a new 2003 WRX STI Spec C and a 2003 WRX STI Spec C limited), I would be comparing the 2. The Spec C was only 35kg heavier than the GR, had a twin scroll 2ltr with its gentlemens agreed 280ps and pulled from 1000 rpm, it was a monster, the GR's smaller displacement won't put me off, and its going to be better on fuel, it's downsides are the modern tech that has gone into it, the seating position is a little high (sometimes not a bad thing), but the mirror and display screen would annoy me a little. Still, the GR has a lure that most modern cars don't give you, I may be tempted to invest in one and forget about all the hype that goes with it.

Maybe I'm getting older (I'm 39 now) but one thing I do not like about modern cars is the silence in the cabin.. I hate to not hear anything from the outside world, and from the engine. I am a professional mechanic, I work on cars, so I can test drive new cars almost everyday. They are fast, comfortable for sure, but... I own a 1994 Autobianchi Y10 and a 1999 Honda Civic Ej9 and to be honest, I wouldn't change them for ANY modern car. I love the Y10, no power steering, no insulation, nothing, but it is FUN!! Every time I drive it, even if it is noisy, vibrating, rattly, it is AWESOME! Fun fun fun every time, puts a smile on my face even at 50 km/h on a twisty road. The Civic is a little bit more refined, but still a fun car to drive. I drove many top end cars, Maseratis, Porsches (I worked in a Porsche garage) Audis, etc.. but.. I still prefere my small slow little fun cars. The Peugeot 106 rally was one of my dream cars as a teenager, maybe I'll find one in the future to add to my garage.

For the haters saying that he is out of his mind, just take a simple example. Is a simple go-kart faster than a normal casual car?? Of course not. Is it more fun to drive?? Absolutely. But it's not practical for daily use and not safe too. It's not about how fast you can go from A to B, but how big is the smile on your face while doing it

No modern car will ever be comparable with the sensations of a classic one, for better or for worse. One thing is certain, if thirty years ago you would have told me that in 2020 a small 1270kg sports car is considered light, I would have thought you crazy! Anyway, a praise to the GR that as far as possible, makes us go back at least 15-20 years.
