Five percent of the world’s population takes care of 80 percent of its biodiversity. It is time to show up.
We are Tzawata Ila Chukapi, a Kichwa community of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Today we face the threat of being removed from our home, and our ancestral lands, so that the foreign mining company, TerraTurismo, can continue mining. This is an urgent request for funds for the direct defense of our community and the Amazon.
We have been defending our ancestral lands for generations, ever since missionaries and settlers came, displaced our people, and forced our ancestors into labor. A few years after we were finally able to return to our home, the mining industry invaded. Since the early 2000s, we have had to resist constant armed attacks and legal persecution for defending our territory. The gold and copper mining is contaminating the rivers and the land that our ecosystem depends on.
We are resisting because that is what life has demanded of us, but we are so exhausted from this constant fight for our right to exist.
This video was recorded in May 2022, but today the situation has become more urgent, as Terraturismo has put in an order to evict us from our ancestral lands.
This is where you come in. We are asking for funds that will directly support our community, giving us the agency to advocate and communicate with the broader world as we fight to protect the Amazon. The money raised here will be used mainly for legal fees, as well as travel costs for court hearings, a computer and a camera. Any contribution you can make will make a huge difference for our community.

Somos Tzawata Ila Chukapi, una comunidad Kichwa de la Amazonía ecuatoriana. Hoy enfrentamos la amenaza de ser sacados de nuestro hogar, y de nuestras tierras ancestrales, para que la empresa minera extranjera, TerraTurismo, pueda seguir explotando.
