My take on it is this. If you’ve been with a team for at least your rookie deal and they haven’t built a good enough team or have mismanaged you as a player then you have every right to leave. However you should not be jumping ship on year 3 when the team has built a solid roster around you that will only get better just because you don’t like the small market. I know they’re millionaires but at the end of the day it’s still they’re job. Or at the very least act like you care and reach out to a new teammate especially one who’s really going to help you out in the moment and the future

@Allen Iversen really cause the bucks and suns just last year proves that a small market team is capable of becoming great if a young star just gives them time. Like yeah David Griffin is a weird dude but he’s built a roster that with Zion is capable of making at minimum the play in. And will only get better in the future

But... why shouldn't he, if he doesn't like living in or playing for New Orleans? I mean, what exactly have the Pelicans really done for Zion? They didn't even have to really scout him, since he was the unanimous number 1 pick. All they did was: Play bad ball and win a lottery. Why should Zion show any sympathy or engagement with that? Now if the Pelicans paid for his education, medical bills and developed him from a young age... like sportclubs in Europe do, insert everything Barca did for a 15-year-old Lionel Messi here... yeah, then you could expect some loyalty and commitment. But in the US system, where franchises don't have to do shit for youth players and gets potential stars gifted for being bad? Let's take the extreme example: Imagine being a summerchild and being drafted first by the Minnesota Timberwolves... you don't want to go there, because winter lasts from October to the end of March. And it is one of the 3 worst run franchises, alongside the Kings and the Knicks. I wouldn't blame a player if he tried to get out of there on draft night. And I love Minnesota, my favorite artists come from there... still wouldn't be mad at anyone that didn't want to play for this poorly run franchise. The Pelcians aren't that far off. They wasted Chris Paul. They wasted Anthony Davis. That might be, why Zion has 0 trust in them. And it is not as if they did a brilliant job building that roster... I mean, is CJ McCollum really the 2nd best player on a championship team? It could work, but I have my doubts.

@@PassivesAbseits because that’s extremely unprofessional and shows an extreme lack of maturity. This isn’t high school this is the nba. You are getting paid to play basketball. At the very least you show professionalism to the organization that drafted you and your teammates. You don’t sit there and complain about everything. And like Rusty said in the video he’s from the Carolinas. Being in a small market like that should not be very foreign to Zion. At the end of the day it’s still his job and he needs to treat it as such and show the bare minimum of professionalism cause the team has done nothing majorly wrong since drafting him

Yeah it's gotta be really annoying if you're a small market team and you're stuck paying a bad contract or trading for an equally bad one if the guy you sign sucks after the fact but if he's good he can still act like a free agent and force his way out of town like Leonard, Davis, PG13, or Harden did. Gotta think the owners are going to try to push for non-guaranteed NFL style contracts since guaranteed deals aren't giving them any security.
@eastsidereviews727
@eastsidereviews727 2 жыл бұрын
I've heard a few names in basketball circles say something similar, the Harden stuff is going to be a big factor in this too. The NBA under Adam Silver has had an usually peacefully relationship with the players, but owners not going to be pleased with this and the relationship might turn.
@joyboy1720
@joyboy1720 2 жыл бұрын
I never understood why people bring this up. You realize the players association also has to agree to the new CBA. It's not like the owners can just make whatever rules they want. They have to actually get the players to agree to it
@homerthompson416
@homerthompson416 2 жыл бұрын
@@joyboy1720 The owners have been dominating the players for the last 20+ years every time there is a new CBA. First they put in the max salary and max contract years in 1999, added a luxury tax around 2005 if I remember right, then in the mid 2010s made the luxury tax extremely punitive, cut contracts to 4/5 years, and ended the ability to use the sign and trade to get the extra year. They have also continually cut down the players' shares of BRI (basketball related income) and make them pay something like 5-10% into an escrow fund that goes back to the owners if the NBA doesn't hit projected revenue targets for the year, which was surely the case in 2020 and 2021. It's because the owners are a lot richer than the players and can hold out longer, and because they make most of their money when they sell the team, not during the season. I honestly hope the next CBA brings back the 7 year contracts from twenty years ago so players can get security if they want it, but does something to address all these players quitting on their teams while under contract. That didn't happen 20 years ago, but maybe that's because you had longer contracts with bigger percentage raises allowed back then.

He has already had several major injuries and has received a lot of criticism due to being called out of shape. When he walks he shuffles and waddles so much so that 2k had to mocap it to get his run correct for their game. That’s a problem. Not only does over-pronation put undo stress on the sides of your feet and ankles but it also causes your knees to slightly bow outward putting stress on your MCL. @@recoil53 Yeah but Giannis is 6´11 and between 245-260pounds, that’s a normal weight for his height. Zion on the other hand is 6´6 285-300pounds with a 44inches vertical, we have never seen someone like that, closest was Miami Lebron at 6´9 273pounds (according to the media), 273 was the heaviest he has ever been, now he is listed at 250, so he is probably around 250-260 … And that’s already a lot for his size, Lebron also has a 44inches vertical, but the thing is that Lebron is 3 inches taller and 20-40pounds lighter, Lebron was almost pure muscle like Giannis. Zion is already like a 30+ years old Shaq, so except if he is really built different he will be able to play many 70+games seasons, i mean people tought the same about Lebron back then, how a guy that big who has a super athletic playstyle will not be injury prone ? But Lebron is built different, that’s a fact, he has elite work ethic, but just like many other players even smaller like Steph Curry, and Steph got injured many times in his career. It's not talked about enough how Zion is just a kid dealing with an avalanche of setbacks. Im sure everyone has experienced being in a bad situation which got worse and worse because of declining mental health. Zion is experiencing this except under heavy scrutiny, and additional drama from the noise of nba media. Think of this from Zion's perspective. Kid just wants to ball but he got injured. He did the rehab so he can play again asap but his body isnt healing right, now he has to get a surgery. If that we're me, I would be in a dark depressive cloud of isolation, I would shut everybody out to focus on myself. Its really hard to be responsible with the dark cloud of depression on top of his head so this the slip up and now he's getting barbequed by the world for his mistake. Again, Zion just wants to play, he wants to heal, he doesnt want to be injured, he doesnt want the drama, he just wants to play. Imagine dealing with this kind of adversity and pressure as a kid, it takes a lot of mental fortitude to deal with this and i feel like thats not talked about enough.

The draft system and rookie contract system certainly limits players' freedom, but it's a reasonable enough compromise to ensure teams have relatively fair opportunities to compete imo. A lopsided league is not fun to watch, and provide less motivation for players to thrive and improve their game. There won't be million of dollars to be spend on max contract if the game is not attractive enough for fans to be devoted enough to pay. As many people had pointed out, Zion, and all other rookies, have the option to sacrifice a year of max money (he will still be paid millions of dollars tho) to choose freely where will be his next stop, regardless of his value and performance.That means wanting out is not an excuse for him to show lack of committent for the game and his personal development. He can still go his way even if he play and train professionally. Show your committent and prove yourself, and fans will be rooting for you to play in a better situation. You don't have to be loyal to the team or the fans. You don't even have to love the game you play. But at least fulfill the basic requirement of your damn well-paid job, and perhaps also show basic respect for your co-workers. Like others had said, Zion (and Harden) forcing their way out like this will most likely harm the players' right at the coming CBA and in the long run.

He's not even 22 years old and has already been hurt several times, and I think people underestimate how hard it is to recover from an injury especially if you have to get back to NBA superstar shape. It's no easy task and Zion has to keep doing it over and over again. To your point Rusty, New Orleans is not so terrible that he would feel the need to get out of there and the Pelicans have done a decent job of surrounding him with talent. Unpopular Opinion: Coming from a Knicks fan, I do not want to see Zion Williamson playing for the New York Knicks. If Zion Williams thinks the Pelicans is a terrible organization. Well, think again... The Knicks owner is a complete clown. Our front office is arguably equivalent to Sacramento Kings. We have an awful head coach in Tom Thibodeau. We literally have many young great talents that Thibs barely gives them PT. The organization has NO FUCkING DIRECTION. I would be damned to see another superstar like Carmelo Anthony waste their talent and prime NYC. Yes, I understand that we are the “Mecca for basketball,” but unfortunately, it is not worth it. Zion seems like a genuinely decent dude, but this route is going to get him a lot of hate from people and tank his reputation (except for whatever team he goes to) and it's not a good track record for the Pelicans that they've failed to build an actual competitive, winning team over the years. Chris Paul and Anthony Davis both wanted out cause the team was not being properly built to be a winner. Long term, this situation is going make for some harsh talks when the next cba comes up and I don't know how long New Orleans can keep being bad real estate for the NBA, team may end up being sold and moved.

Here is something I always wonder about: Wouldn't you, as a GM from another team, offer Zion Williamson a 1 year +2 deal with as much money as you can give. The plus 2 being a player option of course. If the Pelicans match, Zion still can get out after one season, as he could with a qualifying offer, but you also give him the security, that he would be earning around 90 Million Dollars, which should be more than enough to survive. If the CBA only give you the option to offer 1+1 deals, do that instead emphasizing the point, that this will be his only way out of New Orleans, since they will match any other offer anyhow. This is not Zion specific, but a general thing. I always wonder why GMs even offer contracts to restricted free agents, that 100% will get matched by the other team.

I think he’s just not that into basketball. Maybe I’m wrong, but he just looks to me like a guy who is amazingly talented but not really into it. I just don’t see a burning desire to be great and win championships. Some people have to develop that over time and that’s okay. He just needs to do him and realize how short a window of time in his life his basketball career is going to be and start working to make the most of it. Despite how fun he is to watch, he doesn’t owe NBA fans or the world anything. That goes from treating his injuries to signing his rookie extension to negotiating a trade if that's what he wants. But, to say that he hasn't managed his weight and conditioning which most likely contributed to his injury history and the fact that it takes him so long to heal up are already big liabilities against him in contract negotiations. You add to that if he gets a bad reputation about being difficult and not honoring his contractual obligations that will significantly impact his trade value and potentials. He could easily end up out of the NBA by making the wrong set of moves which would be a tragedy for everyone!!!!
