The real-life story of one working wife and mother who became a hero to hundreds during World War II. In 1939 Poland, Antonina Żabińska (portrayed by two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh of “The Broken Circle Breakdown”), have the Warsaw Zoo flourishing under his stewardship and her care. When their country is invaded by the Germans, Jan and Antonina are stunned - and forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck (Daniel Brühl of “Captain America: Civil War”). To fight back on their own terms, Antonina and Jan covertly begin working with the Resistance - and put into action plans to save lives out of what has become the Warsaw Ghetto, with Antonina putting herself and even her children at great risk.

This zoo still exists, Warsaw on the western bank of Vistula was completely destroyed, it was just a pile of stones after the war. The eastern side mostly survived. It's an amazing city, with reconstructed old town and glass towers, ruins and urban mess of every possible style and epoch since medieval. It's my home town and I love it :)

Piotr Czerbniak German artillery, national socialists were just a ruling party. So it was destroyed, I thought that eastern riverside survived since soviets took it and watched how "nazis" slaughter hundreds of thousands people and raze the city to the ground.

I used to love zoos before I discovered animal sanctuaries and breeding centers. Zoos still have a role in awareness and education, but far from what they should be.

Most animals in Zoos are endangered, and Zoos are a way to keep animals safe because they’re habitats are already getting destroyed. I support Zoos, but I think they should do better.

maggzzter Zoos are not for endangered animals. Zoo is where an animal is kept in a small cage for display. National parks and wildlife sanctuaries are the ones that protect the endangered animals in their natural habitat and not in a small cage.

There are coutless other horrible events that happened in the 1930s. One of them is the Ukrainian Genocide from 1932 to 1933. Joseph Stalin organized a famine, he killed between 3 to 8 million Ukranians. He literally got rid of Ukrainians by starving them to death. A lot of people don't know about this event because it was hidden for decades by the Soviet Union.

What happened during WWII was absolutely terrifying and it's disgusting to see people who are so disrespectful. Also, please stop with the "Mission report...". The book by Diane Ackerman made a huge impression on me. It described the impact of WW2 on Poland and the Nazi obsession with racial purity in a way none of us knew, even our families who lived and fought for freedom. Glad that at last some exposure is being given to the Poles who helped the Jews. I really hope the film lives up to this amazing true story.

I heard somebody was nearly out to voice for crying in the theater.. really heavy topic, but i like it. I decided to watch this movie, because of heroin's one sentence" you can never tell, who your enemies are." this feels like the movie is trying to tell other story not only history. I don't know much about the history, but I prefer to believe in what movie tells me, rather than people's opinion.

Read the novel. You will see, among many shocking revelations, the Nazi "Final Solution" for animals. Yes, they experimented on animals to create a super-race of certain types they admired. The story of this Christian family caught up in an abominable period of mankind is filled with courage and unbelievable bravery.

I watch these trailers bout holocaust and think how could those generals do this to innocents and then remember innocents dying in Syria. .. ppl were helpless then they are helpless now, there were monsters then and there are monster now. .and I can do nothing bout it my country is so full we can't even offer refuge to them even if I wanted to and I don't earn much to be of any support. I just wish ppl with power to do so help them. :-(

刘虹 Her and her husband ran the warsaw zoo prior to the outbreak of war. Due to food shortages, attacks on the zoo, and hunting many of the animals were killed or escaped. They made the decision, with great personal risk, to use the zoo as an initial hiding spot for Jews while it was arranged for them to leave the area. They used the many empty cages for that purpose.

Why has noone done a movie about Poland disappearing for 100 years being divided up by three countries. Wesele, the Wedding by Andrzej Wajda comes close. Polish people never get credit for anything. Factory workers, coal miners, cheap labor.

Saw it this weekend. It was good but one scene that confused me was when she gave birth to her 2nd child. The way they showed that scene was weird because there was no indication that she was pregnant. She suddenly has stomach pain and then the next scene is her giving birth. Apparently 9 months got really fast forwarded.
