Maiden Mother Matriarch with Louise Perry

Күн бұрын

My guest today is British journalist Poppy Coburn, an opinion editor at the Telegraph and also at the Conservative Reader. We spoke about Poppy's investigations into the so-called 'charity industrial complex' and what that tells us about how power really operates in contemporary Britain. We also spoke about the emergence of a new Right wing sensibility among zoomers, and how that will manifest itself long-term in politics.
In the extended part of the episode we spoke about the failure of conservatives to contend with Islamism, and what impact the attack of 7th October is likely to have on British politics.
01:08 The charity industrial complex
17:32 Power plays in politics
23:55 Zoomers
31:10 Difference between Zoomers and Millennials
39:39 Mobilisation of young-right wingers
42:11 Critiquing post-liberalism
52:00 Politicians and prioritising abstract ideals

I work in a research centre and much of our funding comes from organisations such as the Wellcome Trust and Paul Hamlyn. None of our research leads to any meaningful outcomes (besides 'this topic needs more research') and the allocation of funds is both extremely opaque and increasingly politicised. The kindest thing I can say about what we do is that we are high-status benefit cheats, it's just that no one complains because no one knows we exist!

Many “research” centres function just like this. Essentially just glorified funding skimming operations with little or no actual benefit to anymore but administrators and a handful of employees. The proportion of research organizations with meaningful or useful output is surprisingly low in general, especially in the social sphere. This always existed, but is now increasingly just large scale activist welfare with even more corruption than the status que waste.

''High -status benefit cheats'' are, of course, the absolute very last thing the UK NEEDS for goodness sake & yet here we are, they're not just alive & kicking but simply flourishing & mostly paid for with hundreds of millions of pounds of taxpayers' money & talk about rubbing our noses in it!!!!

What was so good about this conversation is that it was 99.9% UK focused & which for me was only a good thing, simply because it's very rare for a conversation like this to do so & what usually only ever happens in 99.9% of these type of discussions is that the talk moves pretty quickly to what is also happening in the US & mainland Europe & of course that is normally perfectly fine, as there can be a lot of commonality across the board, but of course, there are still indigenous UK relevant issues that all too frequently don't get debated.

Those evolutionary counter-opposed groups are common in the US too. A guy named LL Nunn started one in the US in the 1890s to support technology development. It has evolved into a social issue think tank and academic institute -- the Telluride House, at Cornell University. I always wondered if poor old LL was turning over in his grave.

A paper both of you might like is "Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens" by Martin Gilens. He looks empirically to what degree it matters who holds what opinion for it to affect policy changes. As you note on the death penalty issue, there are a number of issues where the wishes of average citizens and what is actually implemented by the governments they elect diverges dramatically

God I love this dialogue! Thanks. Just want to point out the essential reality of the 'third sector' in stable and progressive societies, and the fact that it is banned in dictatorships and theocratic (muslim) societies. The problem seems to be a colonisation of certain third sector groups which are dubiously called Charities because they are campaigning groups by this wave of Woke activists bent on decolonising the West. They have found the soft underbelly of society, and both business leaders and political leaders have grossly underestimated the primal power of civil society, which in any humane society takes precedence over commerce and the state. But these millennials have injected politics into that free space of human values. The Zooners will have to change that. Do Not Blame or Dismantle Civil Society! In doing so you will undermine the very foundations of society!

23:30 LP makes an interesting point here, I'm not sure whether I agree or not. I've tried to criticize her for indulging what many would consider soft authoritarian tendencies, but from a broader perspective, it's possible that everyone has become increasingly authoritarian as our politics have become more tribal. Not to be pedantic, but I probably don't agree, mainly because the implied definition of "authoritarian" in this context seems too robust, or the connotation too broad. I think it might make more sense to argue that Conservatives have become more authoritarian, Libertarians have become more anarchic, Liberals have become more Machiavellian, everyone's leaning on a dumb caricature of what are supposed to be their politics, we obviously have an unhealthy sociopolitical mainstream culture.
@frankbrennan1619

Well firstly, we no longer have liberals in the UK, but instead only very rich & very posh '' illiberal liberals'' with their luxury belief systems bestowed by their wealth & educational status & there is literally nobody more less tolerant & authoritarian than this particular cohort & secondly there's no true & proper ''old'' left or right anymore & as completely evidenced by both the main two political Parties merging into an undistinguishable oneness when it comes to nearly all economic & social issues, although we do have the total mendacious absurdity of both the extreme hard far left & the very rich & very posh illiberal liberals continually castigating the current so - called Conservative government for being ''far right'' for goodness sake!!!!

@@frankbrennan1619 All Louise, Poppy and lots of ppl are talking abt is mainstream Cronyism. Of course I basically agree with what they're saying, but it's the wrong conversation. Our political system is broken now, and parties don't represent constituents, nor anything at all, and are for sale, (same in US) are very redundant observations. We should be talking abt what comes after this, what kind of governance we should have, or parties, or juxtaposed beliefs, for when reform takes place. A lot of what I'm hearing is, the mainstream is cynical so let's be cynical, abandons principles and discourse so let's do that, when all else fails ppl are still competency-based, so let's be ruthlessly competency-based. Soft authoritarianism is taking over, so let's completely lean into that. Why do they have to go along with this? Why is the way they think shaped by the broken mainstream? Why can't they hold the line, and maintain their principles in the underground, and wait for the day? Louise's latest album featuring Poppy thus has too much of a mainstream formulaic pop aesthetic, 2/4 stars.

Great discussion. My only gripe is the constant reference to the false left-right dichotomy and thinking in labels. A difficult habit to break, granted. It keeps most people going around in circles, imagining there is a fundamental difference in Westminster and thus enabling the media to funnel the masses into fake tribalism : the narcissism of "small differences" one might say. I think you're on the money when you focus more on the corporate element of the hierarchy - which is where policy frankly emanates. In short, the robber barons and moral busy bodies joined forces. The Gordian Knot of our predicament can't possibly be unraveled unless this is recognised, but from what I hear you're definitely on the right path. Cheers.

None of these new dissident political movements in the west will have any substantial impact, whether it be the various flavors of right wing dissidents or the socialist left. The UK is a declining client state of a declining global hegemon and its politics will reflect that for the forseeable future. Managed decline necessitates managers, and as of right now the managerial class is socially progressive liberals. The economy of every western country will continue to grow at slower and slower rates as growth is no longer driven by large scale market expansion but increased financialization and commodification of the few not yet commodified aspects of life.

@ 6:55 Thi system is not new. A straight line can be drawn from such groups, through "Community Leaders" of Multiculturalism back to the Imperial administration of the British Raj in India. It is almost a template for nepotism, corruption and for tiny groups to wield disproportionate power. A moustachioed Wolverhampton MP of the late 1960s drew attention to this, but what was probably his most important warning was overshadowed by some of his more apocalyptic statements.

Instead of contracting social housing why shouldn’t it be expanded. The real issue in housing is the town planning act. If there was a swell in new construction the amount of social housing increases whilst simultaneously reducing house prices and thus rents. It would also create more jobs and be a useful boost to the economy. With the imminent collapse of globalisation and most integrated economies globally. Couple this with automation, most young or even older professionals are really going to struggle way more than they are now.
