In this video I show you something called Euler's disk. This is a disk that has very little rolling friction. I talk about the reason that it does eventually fall over vs what most people would assume the reason is-gravity.

There's an estimated two trillion galaxies in the universe (theres probably a hell of a lot more) Two trillion galaxies each with roughly 200 billion stars on average. It would require orders of magnitude to describe how many planets are in the universe. There's roughly 10⁴⁰ estimated stars in the observable universe (that's ten with forty zeros).

Considering the flexibility and instability of the mirror, I was somewhat surprised it went as long as it did. A disk similar to the one you used with much sharper edges and a more stable platform, such as polished granite or heavy glass, especially with a non-stick compound, would be amazing to just watch. Higher rigidity and lower friction should be the way to go here, definitely. A laser etched image on the side of the disk and some directed lighting on it would probably be a very popular video.

You are correct. No gravity no friction, my clarification is that at is friction, caused by gravity, and not just a downward force that stops the coin and pendulum. If you only thought that gravity was the thing stopping it then you would forget how different surfaces with different friction factors affect it.

Gravity in Earth is the cause of friction in this scenario, but really anything that causes the two surface to contact will induce friction. If it was a magnetic field pulling it down, there will be friction regardless of gravity. Gravity isn't the main determining factor since any downward force will achieve the same result.

Two of my friends did some cool research on this for their undergrad project. They were pushing for it to be published too but they didn't have the time to edit their report in the end. The physics is super fucking interesting when you get in to it. A confusing mixture of rolling friction and kinetic friction. Something I'm intrigued about is the 'chirp' you hear in the final couple of seconds. It's called a finite time singularity, it shows up in all sorts of places, notably the fairly recent gravitational wave detections. The frequency of the black hole/neutron star orbits (and hence the frequency of the waves) increases very gradually as the orbit decays, and then in the final moments you get this rapid increase. It turns out, the frequency approaches infinity in the final moment before the disk stops spinning.

Gravity does not affect the rotation of a "falling object" because the coin falls towards the center of the earth the only reason gravity affects the coin is through increasing the friction.

I'd like to see how fast it spins. I wonder if you could use at bit of reflective tape and a laser RPM counter to measure how fast it spins as it gets closer to drop.

I know it's a late reply, but that would be a very disappointing result, because the coin actually doesn't rotate that much. It's the constantly accelerating change of the contact point on the very edge that we hear. The coin actually rotates relatively slow around the Y Axis, it's the contact point that changes increasingly rapid. You could Not measure that with a reflective tape, because the tape would be attached to a fixed point on the coin, and, as I said, the coin rotates slowly. You would need something like a two-dimensional, planar pressure sensor to keep track of where the contact point is, and that would be a very quick rotation on a circular pattern.

Do not think that would help, but using bigger glass and attaching it firmly to surface below, like on a huge piece of rock would help for sure, the mirror wobbled on the table a lot and there was big energy loss.

Lube would introduce "stiction" - where the edge would have to break free from the tension of the lubricant. Perhaps with an extremely thin and light layer. Maybe. What would work better, I think, would be a much harder, stiffer and smoother (highly polished) surface. A glass mirror is not ideal. Notice how the whole mirror flexes (due to its plastic frame) as the coin spins. That's energy lost to "bending". A thick slab of very hard steel polished to perfection would yield even better results I think! There is a Japanese video on YT where the challenges machine shops in a sort of competition to make the longest running spinning top. They end up with using very hard steel to get the longest run times.

different surfaces have different friction, which is what he talked about before plus the speed of the spin doesnt have anything to do why it stops spinning. spin a coin similarily with one hand and you get practically the same results for how long the coins spin. he didnt intend to spin them at different times and he was using one hand to spin the coin with the other hand to start the timer anyways.

The saucers in my school cafeteria were really smooth, and so were the tables. The saucers would spin a good long time (maybe not 2 mins, but long) and they were LOUD AS F***, especially considering the acoustics of brick walls, metal ceiling, hard metal tables, and tile floors. A dozen or so kids spinning saucers at lunch time could make a lunch lady explode.

I've had one of those for over 20 years. You also need to understand that the SHAPE of the mirror is CONVEX. This detail is very important for the scientific understanding of how the friction is applied. It is NOT solely the smoothness of the glass. The edge you spin the DISK on makes a difference, too. One edge is more rounded than the other! Your videos are becoming less and less thought out with your small amount of research and detail. This is really a simple toy to explain. Why did you do it so lazily?

I think that you may be overlooking that without gravity, there would be no friction on the surface, so you could still say that it's alone due to gravity, that the "coin" stops, the gravity create the friction by forcing the two objects together in a downward direction.

This is not an experiment that could be done in his style. It'll take several days if not months with several different controls and several different stimuli applied for different amounts of time at different intervals in order to see if anything makes a difference. That's hard to do in a ten minute video.

Friction both on surface and air molecules . So I'd say gravity is the least intefrence of all. When you get to the fine details gravity enhances friction. Air is a hige friction problem the larger you get
