Richard Wright on keyboards always laid down the perfect canvas for David Gilmour to create his guitar masterpieces on. Incredible

Yes, you are right - this is the town of Pripyat, which is close to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. I think this video clip is about how humanity is successful and advanced on the one hand (space travel, for example) and irresponsible on the other - the nuclear power plant accident, the death of many people and the long-term pollution of the environment. Incidentally, Pink Floyd won a Grammy Award in 1995 in the "Best Instrumental Song" category for this song.

I'm a year late to this reaction vid and ironically you are a year early, I to was at Earl's Court in '94 and it blew my mind at the time, I'm thankful that I made it especially when it was one of the last concerts that they performed and is now classed as possibly the best ever in the history of music, happy memories for us both I assume

Great to see you get into Pink Floyd. They are a must have catalog. Try "Echoes" but find the live version where it's the last time Richard Wright and David Gilmour play it together.

First, do the one in Pompeii in 1971, then the last time Rick played it with David in Gdansk, Poland in 2006. Truly a masterpiece both times.

What a great reaction and insight from your point of view, definitely enlightened me to this song that i've heard several times before. Live Pulse remastered SORROW and HIGH HOPES. Just regular guys dressed like they are mowing grass, that perform outstanding music together, with unparalleled showmanship

"These guys really know how to deliver on the atmosphere". This song is literally ALL atmosphere. Pink Floyd put out some incredible instrumentals (and some other songs that might as well be). If Iron Maiden are masters of instrumental storytelling (and they are), then Pink are masters of instrumental vibe-setting.

Ever since I was a kid in the sixties, my musical mind has always been attracted to the more heavy flavour of Rock. You know, Rolling stones, The Who, MC5, Iggy Pop & The Stooges and later Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, while at the same time being influenced by Music my parents listened to. Dave Brubeck, Glenn Miller, Luis Armstrong, Gene Krupa, on my dad's side and Luis Mariano and Mario Lanza and musical stuff like Mary Fucking Poppins or West Side Story and Oklahoma on my mum's side. But Pink Floyd has always been a persuasive intruder. Gently but purpusfully getting an elbow into my ribs. And for some reason I've always let 'em intrude, I've let 'em in, cuz their music was never out of place in the middle of the violence I've listened to. Slade Alive, Made In Japan, the likes. Pink Floyd was always welcome as a difference, something worth listening to, something that made the brain go "hey, what's this?". David Gilmour was always a welcome guest in my mind of how music should sound like. The man has always been seen as one of the better guitar players out there. Alvin Lee, Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore, Toni Iommi and David Gilmour. Sounds about right, doesn't it? Happy listening, dahlings.

This is one of many Pink Floyd tunes that I will kick it in my room with a black light on sitting in my recliner and when I am done listening to it come out with a euphoric feeling. Now this is achieved only from listening to the music, nothing else is needed. You all know what I mean, lol. A true natural high.

I still rock this. He uses an Octave Pedal in this track. His playing is cinematic and tasteful. I listened to this awhile back when I felt lost and I'm not going to lie. I still feel lost. In Any Tongue is a song you should absolutely watch the video for. David Gilmour just hits you hard in the feels.

What Do You Want From Me? is another one from The Division Bell, that you might like. Marooned was a really amazing slow bluesy rock jam, a feel PF often play so very well together. The guitars and keyboards really seem to be inspiring each other's playing, somehow. I always hear that in Floyd music.

It was the ISS. They allowed for shots of the inside, making it look abandoned. The book floating was a nice touch. And yes, the second half was shot near Chernobyl. Sort of like Live at Pompeii, they do what they want to do, because... well...why not?

Good, isn't it? I was at Pulse so yeah I heard that guitar solo and was over on the left upper tier. I'm normally very heavily debating science and some politics and I had a lady in Georgia, I'm a Brit, came to me after telling me she had heard about me and asked if I would teach her. She was trying to get me to listen to Tom Macdonald and when I eventually did I found you guys and binge watched you and I'm certain of recognised you as reacting to Pink Floyd previously. Now used some of your videos. On A Momentary Lapse of Reason and the album this is from, Signs of Life plays into Learning to Fly (AMLOR) and Cluster One plays into What Do You Want From Me quite well. Kind of like Shine On You Crazy Diamond and its parts. Wearing the Inside Out from same album as this one sounds very Dark Side and written, performed by the late and brilliant Richard Wright who was the sound they talked about from the seventies. Dogs, Sheep and Pigs from Animals. Mother, Hey You, Another Brick in the Wall, In the Flesh from The Wall. Live From Pompeii and the track Echoes originally from album Meddle. Us and Them, Money, Time, The Great Gig in the Sky from Dark Side of the Moon. Wish You Were Here, Have a Cigar and Welcome to the Machine from Wish You Are Here. Keep Talkin', Poles Apart and High Hopes from The Division Bell. As an aside Roger Water album Amused to Death and he's political and the last four tracks among with The Bravery of Being Out of Range and What God Wants. Gilmour had a couple decent solo albums and the track On An Island and one from the album after that the name of which I can never remember. One with crows on the cover. Friend of mine into the band met the cover artist, Storm Thorgeson some years back so gave him a box of promotional material. Son of a ...

@7:10 yes, that is Pripyat, Ukraine which was the city where the families of the Chernobyl Power Plant workers lived until Reactor #4 exploded on April 26th, 1986 and covered the city in radiation, forcing an evacuation. It has been a Ghost City ever since. As for the man running around and the little girl, I believe they are Ghosts that didn't want to leave. If you notice when the man is writing in his book at the end, nothing prints out and that leads me to believe he is a ghost.

I've got some new neighbours across the landing. From Kinshasa, Zaire. Five kids they have. Noisy buggers too. But I don't care too much. They're lovely when they're silent. I buy them ice-cream when I have the money to spare and the car comes around. They remind me of you; not that I desperately wanna lick at you, but they're lovely people. I don't know them exactly, but I see them and they're lovely, just a different colour. They speak a language I understand and they live a life I understand. And their children love ice-cream and I have the money, sometimes, to share that happiness with 'em. We don't talk. We just lick and enjoy. Chocolate and Vanilla. Isn't life grand when you can have these moments?

This is a short one but it really takes home the idea that we are “Marooned” on planet Earth. We’ve got nowhere to go. And if we destroy this island that we’re on, we’ve got nothing. Destroying our planet is destroying us. So the Chernobyl scenes are very fitting. I don’t think they had that in mind exactly as they were writing and recording this. It was mostly improvisational, done in two or three takes as I recall. But the song’s sonic atmosphere took on its own meaning.
