This isn't the place I thought it was! A serendipitous misdirect leads us to Marion, Illinois and its two big, fun antique malls in this video. We intended to go shopping in the next town up the road, but something tells me there's a reason I was meant to discover this new place! Will we find great old antiques and vintage that our collectors will love?
Our first stop is Marion Antique Mall, which fills an old trackside warehouse with thousands of square feet of cool old stuff. Right away, we find a surprising variety of mid-century modern along with the usual primitives, farmhouse items and cast iron ware we're used to seeing in this part of the country. We can't take the 1900-vintage post office window home with us (even though it's on my 'bucket list'), but we do find deals on a 1970s 'boho' Hawaiian carafe, a Lefton weather reading owl and a really fun 1940s red 'bakelite' (catalin, technically) picnic set in suitcase that have to go home with us.
Elvis may have left the building, but his 1970s throne chair didn't! Our inquiry with the Marion mall owners leads us to another antique mall discovery, when they inform us that just up the railroad tracks is Warehouse Antique Mall.
This second mall is a big surprise, a 1905 brick edifice filled with mostly mid-century modernism, home goods and kitsch that's fun to explore. Resin grape and pendant lamps drip from the ceiling and 1940s barstools offer a fun look for a mid-century kitchen or home bar, while vibrant Empoli glass and kitschy 1970s banks and cookie jars capture our attention. This is a fun town full of cool stuff, and we'll be back to visit our accidental discovery in the future!

Sir George, Thank you for reopening my eyes on the atrocious events that young Emmett Till, (Mamie) his loving mother and the educated forward thinkers of America endured. I was crushed all over again. Like they say "NEVER FORGET". Once I saw that September 22nd, 1955 Jet Magazine article you showed in your video (at 27:37) I knew I had to have it. I immediately contacted the Warehouse Antique Mall, spoke with a lovely woman who took the time to locate not only the September 22nd, 1955 edition but also the September 8th, 1955 edition. I bought both and received them yesterday. To me they are priceless ! In my opinion the guts that Jet Magazine and let us not forget Mamie Till's strength to take on and talk about the KKK / Jim Crow Era is amazingly courageous to me and must have been horrifically frightening too !!! Once again, thank you Sir George 👑.

Interesting that you judge the age by the cable. In the UK, to sell most electrical items commercially, ie in a shop, items have to be safe, so they are either rewired or have the cable cut off so they cannot be used without rewiring . We as a nation are almost trained to ignore the cable

A tent and Lee, the grey line. The Alamo with people. I was told that they were given out or bought from the Bank of Stockton. California. Elsewhere also of course. Just a figure sold for $30-$40.

Repurposing can be great, but usually I only do it when one of my vintage item break and I can then create art or something new with the pieces. The furniture is the tough one for me, sometimes something is so damaged the new hardware and paint gives it new life, when it’s perfectly fine just needs a restore and gets painted and made to look ‘modern’ is where I get flustered.

Good evening, George! That male head vase was interesting. I've never seen a male head vase, and I wouldn't mind having that one. That Victorian bed was fantastic! They can tend to look a bit "tombstone-ish", but I like them. I've seen quite a number of the old floor lamps, at a local thrift store, for $5.00 and $10.00. If I had space for them, I'd buy every one of them I've seen. Not too fond of the birdcage into light fixture thing. Loved the violet cider/lemonade set, with the grapes! Wow! I've had so many of those ice crushers. I used to get them for $2.00 to $5.00, at flea markets and thrift stores. That definitely was a good wrong turn! Lots of interesting items! Thanks for the take-along!!!
@TheAntiqueNomad

It sure was serendipitous! I see male head vases seldomly. I really liked that bed, you're right that some seem too ponderous but that was well proportioned. The birdcage light fixture thing seems to be over, no one really responded well to that! That cider set was great, you were not the only person to oooh over it. The ice crushers were everywhere once upon a time (when people got fridges that would do it for you), but barware collectors like me have driven up prices! So glad you got to see this one

@@TheAntiqueNomad Yes, it definitely was a serendipitous "wrong turn"! I've never seen a male head vase, and I've been to many antique shops and shows. I've always wanted a Marilyn Monroe and Jackie O head vase...can't pay what those usually go for, though...but that male one really interested me. Yeah, me and my beverage sets fixation 😆 That cider set would fit right in quite well. I couldn't tell you how many of those ice crushers I've had or how many different designs. I would never buy them if they didn't have the hanging part, so I passed on many more than I bought. I ended up giving away most all of them.

You mention the coin banks around 28:30 and talk about how it is almost like paper mache. I have a couple little pink bear ornaments and a coin bank listed with this feel. My question is...what is the material? I have tried to figure it out and I assumed it was, as you said, like paper mache. Do you think it is just paper pulp and glue that is molded? It doesn't keep me up at night but I have to admit that it is a mystery I would like to solve, lol. ☺
