TheApostleP Got a Package from Wranglerstar Today...

11 жыл бұрынAfter seeing and commenting on one of my Benchmade 940 videos a couple of months ago, Cody from Wranglerstar and I started a dialogue about this legendary model from the boys in Oregon City. Most of you will remember that Cody has a 940 of his own, which has been featured in a few of his videos. It is his EDC blade and has been for years. If you follow Wranglerstar, you'll also know that "EDC" for Cody is a little different than "EDC" for most of us. This blade is a KZfaq legend, and it is well-used to say the least!
Because of my respect, admiration and affection for Cody, as well as the support he's given me in this KZfaq project of mine, I offered to put a fresh edge on his 940 for him and give it a general tune-up. Today is the day it finally arrived, and I'm pretty stoked to have an opportunity to do something special for such a great guy!
Cody also sent along a couple of "bonus" items. Check it out, guys...

Cody is a great guy. His contributions to the YT community are invaluable to many of us, and I'm glad to be able to repay him in this small way. Wranglerstar rocks!

Wow, you're not kidding! I offered to sharpen Cody's 940 a few months ago, just to do something nice for a KZfaqr I admire a great deal. I sure didn't expect to see this kind of response. I'm blown away!

I just got delivery of mine today. I ordered the 940-2 just because I like G10. Mine came perfectly centered with no play or rock. It's still in the break-in period so it doesn't dropshut yet but it's smooth. It's so easy to snap-close it. I think I now understand why the 940 has become such a classic and a legend.

Great question, buddy. Your hunch is correct -- prior to about 2008 BM used 154CM in the 940 series, and Cody's knife is indeed that old. It's 154CM.

I really like the way the aluminum handle models look when they wear. I was excited about the 940-1 but i think i will go with a regular 940.

Good eye, Cole! The early 940's, 941's and 943's were made in 154CM. The S30V versions arrived in about 2007-8. Cody's 940 has been around awhile :)

Yes I do think Cody has tossed down a proper gauntlet to you good sir. Both blades seem to have been very well used, of is that abused. Have fun with Cody's toys.

Wow, that LX2 looks really nice. I did end up getting a regular 940, but the blade was badly off center and unfortunately I ended up stripped one of the scale screws trying to loosen the scales and inprove the centering. I like the 940 though and Id be happy to have one with a centered blade.

Cody must be a pretty nice guy if you're going to fix his knives for him. I subscribed but not a big knife fanboy. I look for the under $20 ones that way when they get lost, as they will, it's not so bad.

What's amazing to me is he has had that knife so long and has never had a issue. I sold all of my bemchmades because the axis springs where always breaking. Maybe the old bemchmades where better quality

That's the plan :). That Gerber is gonna be a bit of a challenge. It's chrome plated high-speed steel... should be fun!

Looking forward to seeing the finished product on these two blades. Showing my BM ignorance here, but since Wranglerstar's 940 obviously has some years on it, is the steel different than what they put on them today (which is S30V, IIRC)? More succinctly, what the blade steel on that workhorse? :)

That, my friend, is a tough one. But by a razor-thin margin, I guess I'd have to say S30V. In my experience, the edge-holding is about the same; corrosion resistance is a little better with S30V; 154CM is a little easier to sharpen and S30V takes a slightly keener edge and is finer-grained. But it's close. You can't go wrong with either. Crucible does now make a steel called CPM154, which has the composition of 154CM, but made with powdered metallurgy like S30V. It is superior to both.

those 940s are sweet looking(especially wranglerstars). i like the card that says(as)iron sharpens iron(one man sharpens another), i'm sure you know which part of the bible that's from. you know gerber catches A LOT of flack for manufacturing overseas but, i think their knives are pretty excellent. never had a problem unless i was being dumb with one, which never happened yet.

Some do some dont. Brand new you usually have to have some play with a good action. But once worn in thay drop shut way better.
