At the request of several of my subscribers and frustrated Umnumzaan owners... Here's a short video detailing the differences in operation between the Chris Reeve Sebenza and Umnumzaan, as well as some tips for understanding and operating the Umnum smoothly and comfortably. Enjoy!

Great video. I just got a brand new Umnumzaan and felt like something was wrong with it. I heard you weren’t supposed to flip them but I expected it to open similarly to my flippers. After trying to open it the right way, it now works as smoothly as you would expect a high dollar knife to open. Thanks for the video! My joy of ownership is restored!

I watched your video several times before ordering my Umnumzaan. I was able to hit the ground running as opposed to tearing up my thumb as I did with my first Sebenza. Thanks for the informative and instructional video!

Awesome video Apostle thank you. Some reviewers are overlooking the detailed work in the area as you pointed out and labeling them flaws. I appreciate you taking the time to educate us on the actual design of the knife.

I know I'm probably late to the CRK party, but thank you for the video!!!! I was struggling on opening the knife originally. Noob here, just got the Zaan, grabbed both the Drop Point & Tanto. Deciding which I want to keep, maybe both will be best. Thank you again for the vid, starting to appreciate the opening style of the Zaan's!!!!!

The Umnum does indeed take some getting used to. And, brand new, they do need a bit of time to break in. Mine was a real thumb bruiser at first, but now (through break in and learning proper Umnum technique) it is smooth as buttah! :) Great vid as usual Rob!!!

Seriously thank you for this video!! Had a Sebenza that took me a bit to figure out compared to my other knives. Just got a new to me Umnumzaan and knew what I was doing after finding this video the morning the knife was due to be delivered.

Well shown & explained, and very helpful Rob, thanks! I'm looking forward to going home, and practicing my technique... hopefully getting more comfortable with that semi-sharp lock bar ledge. As one of those people that has questioned you about this, your time is appreciated!

Great video, thanks for the tips! It helped me to understand the knife ergonomics better and I can now flip it with much more ease and enjoy the knife much more. Such videos should be done by CRK themselves. Thank you.

Again Thank you for your videos!!!! I own an Umnumzaan now. I bought it based on your initial review, actually because of both of your videos!!! I love it sooo much!! I did have to adjust the pivot, & actually had to loctite it, but it hasn't budged not even a bit!!! It is a smooth operator. Thanks buddy! Loyal viewer here! Rene

Great video. I’ve got an Umnumzaan on order now. After handling my friends Sebenza 31 large and 21 small I can identify how their opening actions do feel like an “out and around “ kind of motion like you showed here. I think the Umnumzaan will click with me more with its direct action! (I also don’t care for the sharp thumb studs on the sebenzas)

Got a question for u. I just got exact same one but i have a problem that i cannot get past it. The pocket clip is alll the way further out compared to a Sebenza 21. The u num pocket clip really digs into my hand, especially my pinky. I think if the made the lockbar thikness same as the 21 and therby the pocket clip a little further in it would be kuch better. In addition the back of the handle feels a little smalle in circumferance/width and is not as comfortable. Other than that no complains

Curious as to how difficult it is to open off handed, can you do the same motion from the right side as the left?

I have to admit that it took me a couple days flicking the knife in order to feel comfortable with the Umnumzaan. I absolutely love the knife now. I wish I would've found this video sooner. It may have saved me some time.

Nate 0077 I have found that using the flat top of your thumb nail makes it easier to open the sabenza and Umnunzan.

Is the umnum just as smooth as the sebenza? I want to buy my first CRK this week, and the umnum is what I'm wanting more but is it smooth like the sebenza?!

+TheApostleP I now have both the large sebenza 21 and the umnumzaan, after some washer polishing on both they are very smooth. The sebenza is like it's riding on air, but the umnumzaan isn't as smooth, still very nice but the added lockbar pressure makes it a little less smooth. Would LOVE the pivot bushing system in it

When you need a video guide or written instructions on how to do basic operations of a folding knife to prevent soreness, that is not user error, that is poor design. I have had 2 Sebenzas and 1 Zaan, and even though, they are clearly the best made knives I have owned, they are fatally flawed for many users.

These knives are overpriced artifacts from a bygone era. About 6 years ago, I bought a small Sebenza and shortly after discovered the $25 Aliexpress clones and ordered one. When I realized the clone was >95% as good as the 'real' thing, for a fraction of the price, I returned the Sebenza and bought a bunch of new blades. CRK might have been the best thing years ago but that ship sailed.

Definitely not competitively priced, especially noting how far alternatives have come. They’re pretty resolute on their business model, not sure how it’ll go for them in the next 5-10 years, even with the adoption of s45vn. I guess some people just can’t get around the psychology of the clone. I own an Umnumzaan in the new steel and love it, but completely agree that the knife world is so multivarious that everyone can find something that works for them. Hell, most of the time it’s my little dragonfly that does most of my cutting.
