the lack of natural stretchiness is a real thing. also an interesting idea advocating for cotton as a winter fabric. I've found that in the summer, lightweight cotton tends to get damp and heavy the minute you sweat because it's so absorbent; wool-linen has become my summer preference for tailoring. for years I've been out on OTR cotton suits, but you've inspired me to maybe revisit it for MTM/bespoke. nice video!

The wrinkles and fading are similar to the yellowing of sneakers for sneaker heads: it’s endearing and adds more richness to the garment. Thank you for highlighting this brilliant point! Loved this video ❤️🔥🔥

I have a mint green, very light weight cotton suit from Burberry. It wrinkles a lot but it is fantastic to wear in warm weather.

These are also great fabrics for a chore jacket (especially the French workwear blue).

Thanks Mark. Another great video! With the lack of stretch in a cotton suit, would you go as far as advising one size larger to get the extra room in an OTR suit?

I have been on the search for a charcoal heavyweight cotton suit. My thought is that over time it would fade to an exceptional Russian blue type color, but I can't seem to find a maker that has something of the sort.

Thank is difficult indeed. You may find something that you might like with the Brisbane Moss cotton bunches. Best of luck!

Let's say it's a hot summer day in Hong Kong and there's an outdoor occasion formal enough to require a suit. What do you wear? What fabrics do you choose for a suit, a shirt, even socks? Would you try to get away with not wearing socks? What shoes would you choose?
@markchodotcom

Lightweight wool suit, cotton linen shirt, I'd brave the over the calf socks if it's an important occasion. Loafers or lace ups are OK.

@@markchodotcom Thanks for answering my question. Most of the occasions for which I have to wear suits are held in hot Asian countries, so this is really helpful.

would you ever hand wash a cotton suit? esp. if it is unlined and unstructured. As it doesn't have the natural anti-bacterial properties that wool has so it probably needs more regular cleaning.

Dry cleaning will always be the best for a cotton suit. Washing with water could lead to unevenness in fading in certain areas which may not be the most desirable look!
@markchodotcom

I'm not sure I would because of the unpredictable shrinkage. Regarding the lack of anti bacterial properties, that is an astute observation. I wonder if you could put it in the freezer as a way to sanitize it, the same way hardcore denim fans might.

@@markchodotcom Funny enough that's a very complex argument. Freezing clothes (or food) doesn't actually sanitize anything, in the sense that while it kills some bacteria, several kinds can survive it, and just remain dormant. Most sources claim that it will not work for jeans, as the smell will come back very quickly as surviving bacteria reactivate - though I haven't been able to find any hard evidence for it, just advice from various scientists. Interestingly, repeatedly freezing and thawing is reportedly much more effective at killing bacteria.

You go from cotton to wool as the weather gets hotter?
@TheArmourytv
@TheArmourytv 3 жыл бұрын
Not neccessarily, what Mark means is that a heavy cotton suit is his preference to wear during winter vs a light weight cotton suit in summer which tends to wrinkle a lot more.
@markchodotcom
@markchodotcom 3 жыл бұрын
In my case, yes. Lightweight wool in the summer is very nice, personally I prefer it to lightweight cotton. I think it looks better and keeps you just as cool, if not more so.

Wrinkles, worse drape, no stretch, gets hotter than wool. It's just inferior to wool and linen. May work in winter but you can get more warmth with thinner 100% regular wool. Cotton blend with others in small quantity may work better.

A large part of owning a cotton suit is how different it wears compared to a wool or wool blend suit! different suit for a different ocassion.

I can’t understand how the tailor got the sleeve length so wrong! Surely he should have anticipated the bunching in the crook of your arm.

It was ok at first but it shrunk after cleaning. It's quite noticeable on the trouser, too. I'll let it out someday. In the meantime, I'll just Thom Browne it.
