This is quite a long video, if you would rather just see the results, check out my written review on :
The Art Gear Guide bit.ly/2wgwQAX
this video had too much information in it to make below 15 minutes or less.
Also I apologise for the end of the video, it jumps about a bit and my voice sounds strange, I was in immense pain and at one point I got a really sharp pain towards the very end. All well now but I apologise anyway.

Donations
I am not comfortable adding this to my site or KZfaq channel. I receive many emails and messages asking me how people can help support The Art Gear Guide, mainly I think due to the fact that I purchase all of the supplies myself, except those sent directly from companies kind enough to do so. I have decided to add a donations button to my site, however, I feel the best way to add such a campaign is as follows, all donations made will be used to purchase art products for review, however, all products purchased using donated funds, after they have been reviewed, will be used as giveaways to subscribers of the KZfaq Channel, the web site or any of the above social media platforms. This way I personally will not benefit from financial donations. I have set this channel and site up for my own enjoyment and not profitable gain. I feel with this support method, everyone wins but not in a financial.

My Own Personal Art
I would not exactly call myself an artist in the true sense of the word, however I absolutely love art as it has helped me immensely dealing with clinical depression due to my battle with constant chronic pain and disability. Follow the link to check out my own projects bit.ly/2qAa7BN
Thank You
Finally, thank you so much for all of your support, without all of you, this channel and The Art Gear Guide would simply not be the same. Thank you so much.

Absolutely, for the price and when you compare it to the Luminance, which is also a phenomenal white pencil, I think the Derwent Chiness White is slightly better, taking into consideration price as well. If both pencils were priced exactly the same, I’d maybe lean more toward Luminance. However just to make matters even more complicated, the new Derwent Lightfast White is a delight, very different to the Chinese White and the Luminance and very opaque.

The Art Gear Guide are the Derwent Lightfast already in stock? I'm really excited about these... Oil based (which probably it means they'll have very good mixibility and blending abilities with no wax bloom), 100% lightfast pigments (I presume all of them have a lightfast rating on the blue wool scale of 8, and for 72 pencils is a really huge achievement). In a market mainly dominated by Faber-Castell and Caran D'Ache, I hope the Derwent Lightfast to be a product that will change the things a bit. And, of course, make all the Derwent haters cry as well

That was very comprehensive thank you. I bought a Luminence white and use that when I need white. But rather stupidly I never thought of using the Drawing pencil white. Those pencils feel like velvet to use, I shall have to remember the white when I next need one. Yesterday I was able to blank out a bit of colour that got in the wrong place by using the Neocolor II as a Tipex/snowpake substitute. It worked a treat.

Thank you for this test. I have a number of these pencils, but definitely not all of them. This makes it easier to choose a white pencil if I need to go buy one - and not have to get the entire set. I'm just beginning a drawing on black, so this is doubly useful. Thanks again.

This is such a helpful review! I was going to buy a bunch a do this myself, but you did it for me - you just saved me a bunch of money there lol, so thank you! Polychromos have been my favorite in a lot of categories for colored pencils, so I'm surprised they weren't a bit better with this, but I'm glad they're at least pretty good. Luminance or Supracolor are generally tied for second place with me, so this is another win for them. I'd love to save up and buy a set some day! Unfortunately I didn't do much research when I got my first "expensive" set of colored pencils, so I bought a full set of Prismacolor Premier, which I personally find too waxy or "sticky". Wish I could trade them up for some Polychromos or Luminance lol!

Thanks for a terrific and much welcome in-depth review video of all those whites Harry. As you say, it's amazing just how different they all look. I only have a few of these; Derwent Drawing, Polychromos and Derwent Inktense. The Derwent Drawing Chinese White's definitely the best one I have. May be it's my screen colours/lighting, but to me, one of the ones that stand out the most in your test on both papers is the Derwent Studio white. Does it not do so well in person so to speak? Anyhoo Harry, I really hope your pain's eased at least somewhat and that you take good care of yourself my friend. All the very best as always, Jane.

Translucent is indeed interesting for blending (or softening). There seems to be cooler and warmer whites: so it would be interesting to see what the result would be when using a colder background color (instead of the warmer toned tan). I think that's also what explains the different feelings about opaqueness for some whites when used on black or when used on toned tan. There might not be a difference in opaqueness, but one in tone (warmer or cooler).

Never realised the Derwent brand as a whole was so dusty. My local art shop used to stock predominantly Derwent and I fell in love with them, I definitely want to try some of these other brands though since I use a lot of white pencils. Thanks for such a detailed review! Keeping it in mind for my next pencil restock.

Ms Inkypunk I know what you mean. I think to be honest it's mainly just the white pencils for example the Artists are really hard, but that White was quite crumbly. I think that was why I mentioned that the white pencils being used are not indicative of the general sets the pencils belong to. Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting I really appreciate it.

A really great review and one that is really helpful to me as I am looking for a really opaque white to touch in fine highlights to my watercolour sketches. I will point out the interesting comparison between the black card stock and the buff tint card did not surprise me at all. The apparent difference we see is mainly an illusion caused by how our brains process value based on contrast. A white will appear most white when viewed against black and a black most black when viewed against a bright white. Colours are the same, based on colour theory when compared against its colour compliment i.e. An orange will appear most orange against it's compliment "blue". Interestingly if you were to create a Black card mask overlay for the buff sheet and then compare the two , they will appear almost the same and in fact some of the more translucent whites may well appear whiter on the buff card due to increased refraction.

If I can make a suggestion. 90% of people do the white pencil test like this. On black or colored surface. But its greatest usability is with overlaying other colors. This will be the definitive test. And yet there are many variables to be taken into account. But the white pencil test has to be done on other colors. Because good pencils take on other colors more easily. So it's about layers and hiding power. There are pencils that work well directly on paper. But when you use it on top of other colors it doesn't work as well.
@TheArtGearGuide
@TheArtGearGuide 8 ай бұрын
I totally understand that and you are absolutely correct, but there is no white pencil, not the Luminance, Stabilo All or Derwent Chinese White, that when lay on top of colored pencil, provides a crisp white detail. This is why so many colored pencil artists have to scratch away layers with a craft knife and apply a white pencil over the scratched area or leave paper showing or use an embossing tool or gel pens. Besides, even if I created a test showing white pencil over colored pencil layers, to appease everyone, I’d have to apply layers from a range of pencils, Lightfast, Polychromos, Prismacolor, Luminance, waxy pencils oil pencils, budget pencils, artist grade and artist quality pencils. Then if I applied that test, I’d most likely provide layers of black colored pencil or a dark mix of layers, but then I know some people would say that white over red layers reacts different, which they’d be right, same with, yellow layers, blue layers, green, brown, pink, purple etc. There are just so many variables it’s a never ending type test. It’s a fantastic idea for a a video, but I’ll have to try test it and see, plus there is also the paper. Results would be completely different on Pastelmat, or UART or Lux Archival paper over say Hot pressed, Bristol Velum, Bristol Plate, 100% cotton paper etc. the variables are insane and each variable would produce a different result. One of the biggest problems I have when conducting reviews is that I try to show results on as many different paper types as I can, but that is a really expensive testing process. Whilst I don’t do what I do for money or income, each time I do a review and try to test the product on three or four different paper types, over a few hundred reviews that is a costly outlay. I wish that was not the case but unfortunately it is. But I’ll definitely give it a go and see what I can produce.

@@TheArtGearGuide I understand perfectly what you said. I also design and use different materials. But most of the time we use white pencil over some color. So it would be the most common in everyday life. I know perfectly well about the number of variables you mentioned in relation to types of paper, brands, surfaces, etc. I know that cotton papers have much more pigment absorption and layers. Pastelmat then has much more. And I also know that depending on the type of pigment, it will have more covering power and the white pencil won't have as much action on top. They will be available in other colors. This also gives you room to encourage people to do their own testing. But I think you could create tests with what you already have and complement it by saying that there are variables, but that the test is just a starting point so you can do your own tests. Even because there are more commonly used types of paper. You wouldn't need to do it in so many. And then everyone does the extra tests. I just commented because I thought it was appropriate. Because I don't see tests that are what we actually use. I'm from Rio de Janeiro - Brazil. I also teach colored pencils. As I'm still struggling to start creating content, as I don't have much patience for it. lol I end up encouraging those who already do it. I like your content. I think you are very detailed. It wouldn't hurt to encourage you. LOL Thank you very much for responding. Hug

@lucianoyannk I think it is an excellent idea mate and I will be definitely thinking about how I can best pack it all into a video. Would you want to see what charcoal and Pastel pencils included in the test, or just coloured pencils. Also would you like to see different white coloured pencils on top of marker layers and watercolour layers?

@@TheArtGearGuide I think everything is valid. I do my tests at home. But when I talk about making videos, it's for people to know too. Because I think the direct white on the paper is just part of the test. I've already done some tests. But I don't record videos. At least I haven't had the courage to start yet.

I think I have it sorted, Ive been looking through the Camcorder and there really isn't anything I can do there regarding exposure etc, but I put the same video back on Final Cut Pro and started messing about with the Color Matching, Saturation and Exposure settings. I'll make sure to play about with those next video. Obviously I am going to have to try new lighting as well for this camera. With my last camera I had everything set up to look decent, bearing in mind I am not a videographer just an art supply review who used to be an Infantry Soldier and had my spine shattered during operational tour. But I will definitely try my best to improve the quality.
