Not only do moisture traps help filter out water in the airline, they also remove dirt and dust keeping your airbrush clean. In this video I'll show you which moisture filters I use and why they are so important to use with a compressor and airbrush setup.

This is my eigth comment on youtube ever and I have to thank you! Not only for all your other videos, but especially for this tip. I was fighting with airbrushing literally for years, even though the actual painting was a lot of fun, IF it worked properly. Bought three different airbrushes, different colors, etc. but never got it to work consistently. Well that ended when installing a sparmax silver bullet and it solved my problems with inconsistency completely. I always thought I was just too stupid to thin the paint correctly because the tip dry and intermittend spray pattern drove me crazy. Thank you so much!

Great video and Avery important one at that. Where I live in the Deep South far out in the country where in the summer months we have an average humidity of about 71-80% w/ a dew point of 72 average so vapor traps are a must. I have to run 3 of them in-line and also use the Iwata pistol grip trap on my airbrushes as a final precaution. I also keep a dehumidifier in the room which helps quite a bit. Another thing I do is use a nylon coil hose from the trap on my compressor to the other 2 traps that are mounted just before my regulator on my bench. The nylon coil helps cool down the air and kinda acts like an air-dryer. I'm actually working on a refrigerated air dryer system for use with airbrush specific applications. I also use an air compressor with an aluminum tank which helps the air coming from the pump condensate in the tank better than a steel tank.

That sounds like an amazing setup. Love the idea of using a dehumidifier along with it. Awesome stuff and info, thanks for this

Teflon tape is good stuff but take care to not wrap it too close to the end of the fitting try to keep it about 2 threads from the end. Why? Teflon can flake off into small bits that can reek havoc with small orifices. From an old instrument mechanic. All the Best

One of the last things I do when wrapping up a session is to tip my tank so the dump valve is pointing directly down & quickly open it fully. The air forces out any condensation inside the tank. Then I'll leave the valve open. The obvious benefit is it removes any moisture before it even gets to the first (yes, I use two) filters. Also, it helps keep the inside of the tank dry (rust). Yes, I've forgotten to close the valve a few times & wondered why pressure wasn't building, but a few face palms later & you'll remember to check it as soon as you switch on the tank.

Thanks for another great and informative video. Please take a look at the Fish Eye filter. It's the best water filter I've ever used. It will shut down your air flow if it fills up with water and the filter elements are replaceable. There's a full size filter for use with a spray gun or in line or there's the Minnow filter, which attaches right under the airbrush similar to the Iwata filter.

@@theartworkshop It really depends on the humidity. I live on the west coast in cali and they work great. You can get replacement inner filters and just change them out. The body of the filter is the main cost. I even dry out the used filters and run them again.

I have made an air tank out of a 1.5 liter plastic Coke bottle. It is a very easy and cheap way to remove the pulse, and to be able to paint for a while, even if your compressor is a bit under the flow, you need for the job. I got the idea, once I had a bottle in the freezer, and it became hard as a rock, without any leaks. The cap is easy to modify for tubes, and you can make mistakes for free, because you can get caps everywhere, if you don't get it right the first time. And you can easily hook up more than one, if you really want to have air for long time flow.

Thanx, Kool informative vlogs as usual 🙌🏾🎨🎉. I see you use the piston compressors. What’s been your userexperience with silent oiled compressors, i.e. SILENTAIRE or JUN-AIR? Oh and are you on IG? I’m a long time user/owner of these compressor types and prefer them overall as they are quiet, reliable and long lasting when purchased at a adequate size 6 GAL tank reservoir or better.

Do you need a moisture trap for the smaller, portable compressors( the ones that use batteries) What size compressor do you start to need a moisture trap? There are now very small compressors that put out 30 to 40 psi, but, they have no tanks, they are just a more powerful PSI version of the portable compressors and slightly bigger! I do not live in an place that has high or not even moderate to high humidity, all year round. Any information or advice you can give is greatly appreciated! Your videos are really helpful!! Thanks!
@theartworkshop
@theartworkshop 9 ай бұрын
You can usually get away with not using one if you live in a drier climate. Every compressor (even portable ones) will build up moisture unfortunately. I'd recommend adding a small grip one to the bottom of the airbrush if you can.

My air trap on the Avanti I have stopped catching water, and I feel like water is in the line but the brush is not pushing out paint the way in normally does, it come out slow and minimal. Is it a bad air trap on the Avanti or can I fix it in the brush itself?

I wonder if moisture is more of a problem with small compressors than large ones? I have one with an 80 gallon tank. I have a moisture trap near the airbrush, but I've never seen a drop of water in it, even in humid summer weather. With the large tank, the compressor never has to run when I'm airbrushing, which might also help.
@theartworkshop
@theartworkshop Жыл бұрын
exactly! Nothing better than a large compressor like an 80 gallon. The moisture will still build up in the bottom of the tank, but gives you such drier air to the air hose.

It's not so much the water mixing with the paint because acrylics are water based anyway, as you mentioned. It's just that water in the line will sometimes cause the airbrush to spit. It can be really annoying!
