How are non Koreans changing the Kpop industry!?

• Non Korean Kpop Idols ...
Boy bands, Love them or hate them, they’ve been around for quite a while now.
Since getting their start with The Beatles in the 60s, the image of boy bands steadily evolved. The 70s brought the Jackson 5, The New Kids came to the Block in the 80s, the 90s golden age shone with the BackStreet Boys and N'Sync. In the 2010s we saw a revival of boy bands starring One Direction.
Now in modern days Asia, and more specifically Korea has given us a new wave a better, faster, stronger boy bands with BTS paving the way. How did BTS and Korean boy bands succeed where western artists have fallen by the wayside?

@BNOZ99 ! if their music wasn't good why would they be global and accomplish so much. It's perfectly fine if you don't like their music I could care less but don't try to act like xenophobia doesn't exist. Also, most of the songs in other languages that they play on the radio are in Spanish which is the second most spoken language in America.

Why everybody forgets HANSON 😔 Also, BTS doesn’t seem desperate for fame as other artists. They don’t ask people to go vote for categories they’re nominated in, we don’t even know if they care for it or not. And often they’re clueless about their own fame. They don’t act as if being relevant is that important. All of these other artists using their bodies and good looks to keep you entertained and there’s BTS enjoying art, painting, dancing, talking to us, sharing music or exercising! Normal things, they’re so relatable. To me, that’s why I find them so interesting and worth of my money and time. Their company’s business approach is very subtle but effective!

@@estelaangeles2346 I would completely accept if they would go for the money cause that's what gives them opportunities to grow and it's a life-goal that a lot of people have, but with the MASS of different content for free and the depths of meaning they have in everything they do, as well as the quality and new ideas they coming up with (Which actually isn't needed anymore), I really don't think they just want money and i really don't know where they're actually losing their message?
@Calix.b

Estela Angeles how would a company operate without money? Money is a necessity and BH will do anything necessary to get it. Think of all the people working behind these massive success. It’s business, money has to come from somewhere. That’s up to their company not up to the members themselves. Also, I don’t think their message has changed, they however have grown a lot and learned a lot. Everything they do has consequences unfortunately, so rather I think they’re being careful and more aware of their impact. We receive not only a lot of free content but a lot of love and attention from them, so in a way it balances out!!

I am truly fascinated to see a video that shows a really good overview on the history of boy bands. It just shows how much the times have changed and how music has reached on different levels of depth. In my honest opinion, BTS is no ordinary boy band, their music speaks a totally different spectrum from the usual or typical songs we would hear and I think it’s a “breaking of that wall” that sets them apart from the rest. The way they tackled social issues and inner problems beyond the surface is what would make you feel their sincerity and heart to connect with you. -An ARMY who listened to Spring Day.

My mum was a hardcore and a dedicated fan of alot of boybands from the 90’s, even more hardcore than me now as a BTS stan! She was very active in concerts and attending them, she has a collection of albums and disks, posters, etc. Her youth days was really fun and how I wished I lived in that time, and because of that, she is very open minded when it comes to me being head over heals for BTS, she is very supportive when it comes to my ‘fan girl needs’, to the point that she gadly came with me in a concert even though she isnt that much of a fan but still appreciates their music (her bias is Jin from BTS).

Esther La I’m sorry but you don’t know them, how would you know he’s joking? Look jin might seem like he’s really confident but don’t you see that it could be something bigger? Jin, and all of BTS, want their fans to be happy, he wants bts to be a place where they can be happy. Seokjin has been mistreated and it’s sad because he has to promote himself with things like eat jin and him being world wide handsome. Tell me, if you were asked to join a boy group only because of your looks, convinced that you don’t put anything to the group. You work hard everyday on your singing and dancing skills and have improved so much but still don’t get placed in the centre or don’t get many lines. Wouldn’t you feel discouraged and shy? I’m not talking about the interview per se where they could actually be joking, I’m more concerned with the original comment as it implies as jin can’t have insecurities or that he doesn’t just because of some act as world wide handsome. He isn’t arrogant like it makes him seem, he cares for others and he could like his looks (bc he is handsome) but he’s definitely not arrogant. I’m just saying that there’s more to him than just this act he’s pulling.

Estela Angeles sweetie BTS produce, write, choreograph, and help with theories for all their songs. Including the help of other people but that would be the case for any artist. I don’t understand why you have such a huge hate red for BTS when in fact they are doing the best they can. They work hard and spread a good message that they want to put out into the world. You say that their songs are connected to their real lives which sometimes, yes can be true but they are speaking about their experiences which is amazing for them. But you are blowing it out of proportion when their whole basis of the music videos and songs are based of a fictional storyline that BTS helped create in order to talk about the struggles of youth and growing up.

Good video. The first record (a 45) I ever bought was the Beatles in 1965, and the latest album I bought was BTS MOTS 7, and I have a lot of all the in-between groups. Some were more successful (however you count success), but all were enjoyable. Thanks for the history lesson!

So so true. Whatever you said about bts was all so true. I mean 1)Breaking the mould- writing songs on self love, mental health, depression 2) Not having any influential background- not belonging to big 3 3) staying down to earth 4)interaction with their fans 5) producing and writing their own songs 6)breaking the language barrier 7) promoting their own culture and language 8) Storytelling through songs 9) staying united even after giving hit solos AND OF COURSE WHO CAN FORGET BANG SI-HYUK - The Man who was the backbone of these boys (Yo hitman Bang introduces hit it second audition) THESE BOYS HAVE REACHED HERE CUZ OF THEIR HARDWORK AND PASSION AND I'M ALL IN FOR THEIR WORLD DOMINATION

Clearly a lot of work went into this. People can be too quick to write off ‘boy bands’ but when you look at the variety, those who play instruments, those who don’t, those who write and or produce, and those who don’t, it’s a much more complex and diverse subject than it appears on the surface. I think, it is maybe worth mentioning, that what really seems to divide what is considered a ‘boy bands and what is not, seems to be based more solidly on whether or not they are perceived to primarily have a young female fan base or not. Essentially the term is widely used in a derogatory way because of misogynistic attitudes to music and the [in my opinion very false] idea that female tastes in music are somehow less valid. Not trying to be over political, but I think it is a valid point that is often missed. Like you say many groups share characteristics but some are boy bands while others are not. Look at the gender split of the fan base ... see if I’m right.

Not Army's fanbase age demographics are way different than most boybands. Our highest number is 40-49 years old and we are not all female. This video explains the difference better I think. It has better understanding about BTS and idol music and the difference between the two as well as the difference between BTS and most of boybands m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qKijjct5taebpGw.html All the boyband stereotypes do not apply to us Army or BTS. TaesGuccciTan I think by shy one she/ he means the personality Jin shows in front of his fans now , not behind the camera / before . In real life , yeah he is very shy, but from the armies’ perspective, he is the shameless one when he’s with BTS( the good meaning of shameless ) I’m not saying Jin fake a personality or something , I’m just saying Jin is different on and off camera so maybe he / she means shy isn’t the iconic personality of Jin.

BTS are so different from ANY other group, boyband, etc. I’ve ever seen before. The *substance* in their work is just immaculate. It’s like a rap group, vocalists, a dance crew, producers, songwriters, comedians, and philosophers all somehow mushed up together and this accidentally made a power combo they didn’t know was going to blow up. You cannot compare BTS to any western boyband in history or Kpop group. They just did everything so differently as artists

I really enjoyed this video. I was a big NKOTB fan when I was in my early teens. I was lucky enough to go to a concert of theirs. Joey was what you would consider today my bias. I loved his vocals. Boyz II Men was a huge favorite of mine in highschool. Their songs were so beautifully done. Of course, my parents introduced me to the Beatles and The Jackson 5 when I was little. Always a fan of both! Michael Jackson and The Jackson Five’s greatest hits was my first tape my parents bought me. I spent most of the early 2000’s listening to solo Artists and alternative rock. I’m a huge Adele and Sarah Baraeilles fan. Fast forward to now, and my 13 year old daughter introduced me to KPOP 3 years ago. It is just about all we listen to. I have absolutely fallen in love with BTS (my daughter’s favorite group)! They are so refreshing to hear and listen to. The lyrical content is incredible to say the least. I love how genuine and humble these 7 men are. I never tire of listening to their music or watching content on them. A cute side note, my mother loves the Backstreet Boys to this day. Your video definitely showed the evolution of many great “Boy” Bands! It was nice reminiscing. Thank you.

Bts doesn't have that aspect of each boy having a particular image or fit in a particular category. In fact that isn't true for a lot of kpop. Bts is far too dynamic for something so confining, so I yeah, I guess a lot of boy bands can be pretty far out of the 'requirements'. Btw it's so cool to see how each boy band era has changed. Bts is the biggest now(as they deserve to be), but a new era will come.

Tsahai Johnson I agree. Also the way he stated it made it seem like it was a curated image.. BTS are so authentic whenever they’re on camera. They don’t feel the need to exaggerate or act like someone they aren’t... this allowed fans to see them as more human and is a huge reason as to why they’re successful today. It was just luck that those specific 7 guys ended up in the same group. All of them have beautiful personalities because they were born that way

I don’t mind if the world ends with BTS being the final greatest boy band, and if anything those boys are so talented they’re just going to accomplish even greater feats in other fields as they grow older. I agree with points made in this video. The way I see it there are boybands who break the mould and leave a lasting legacy like The Beatles, Jackson 5, and BTS. These groups break barriers and start movements. Other groups are more like the Backstreet Boys or NSync where they may (or may not) have been commercially successful, but were a product of their time and had little impact after breaking up.

BTS is respectable not only for their musical side but also for their sense of societal responsibilities. At the earliest stage they talked about students suffering.. then Love yourself-Speak yourself campaign for building self esteem ( I mean.. who thinks of comparing mental health issues with Whale's scream? And which artists tell fans to focus on studies rather than spending time only on their idols? Who compares Pluto as an society outcast!!) And now, Connect BTS is another project that makes me proud for being an ARMY. I also love 1D but they auditioned to be Soloists, so I think they are better as that.. Bangtan, fighting 💜 1D, fighting 💚

i'm a directioner through and through, and bts definitely deserves the success they have. all those choreographed dance moves and incredible vocals should be recognized for sure and i have several ARMY friends. however, i disagree with the idea that Western boy bands have songs with shallow subjects, because while that's true for many songs, it's not for all. One Direction have 'Little Things', 'Home', 'If I Could Fly', 'Moments', 'Don't Forget Where You Belong', 'Right Now' and more songs that are more than the typical song about a crush or girlfriend or breakup. however, those songs are criminally underrated and most people outside the fandom don't know they exist, whereas i've found with BTS that some of their most popular songs have those kinds of deeper meanings, like 'Spring Day'. i think- and this is just my opinion- that the most popular songs by these kpop artists have a deeper meaning than the most popular songs by many western artists, and the deeper songs by western artists aren't really talked about. that's just my opinion.

I'm a huge fan of both The BeeGees and BTS...I have often wondered, were The BeeGees a boy band? They formed organically, and wrote a lot of their own music, but were heavy on Disco, as opposed to traditional pop (althought Disco was very much a faction of Pop). Barry Gibb was highlighted for his good looks and fabulous hair, they were "heart-throbs"...and they were known for their heavenly voices! Eventually like The Beatles, they moved away from Pop and got into more experimental genres, prolific well into the 90s. I have always loved The BeeGees for their incredible vocal range, passionate lyrics, and wholesome, endearing personalities- similarities shared by BTS! I think this video is very informative and interesting, and shows how ambiguous definitions, even in a genre as formulaic as Pop music, can be. Thanks for featuring boy bands we all know and love!
