Theater Talk: Angela Lansbury on "Blithe Spirit"

Nominated for what could be her 5th Tony Award, Angela Lansbury discusses her lengthy career in films and on Broadway and how at the age 83 she maintains the vitality and bravura that have made her a great star.
Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

This is one of the better interviews I've seen because the interviewers don't interrupt and make it about them. They also don't use long set ups to their questions.

I saw the show and she was magnificent as in every show I have seen: Mame, Dear World, Sweeney Todd, Gypsy, and Blithe Spirit. A great actress.

RIP beautiful monster, hurts like hell when we have to say good bye mostly when such a gifted performer used to use us get entertained, having so much to give, having so much fun to entertain us, yeah, a huge inspiration, She was a great Lady indeed. Her voice was iconic, the perfect nanny, the most delightful...company dame for sure. Most of the times theater seems to us such a fake unreal universe. . she had the gift to make it so funny, we could never live without it

A perspicacious actress, extremely talented from an early age throughout her entire life which obviously attracted the attention of those who witnessed/felt her character in performances. Sui generis woman & career seemingly so together & dignified in a superficial, tough milieu of men in systems of raw ambitions & money.

When tickets for Blithe Spirit in London starring Angela Lansbury went on sale, I was delighted and for some stupid reason I didn't book them straight away and by the time I got to looking into it, it was too late and I missed my chance to see her. I still regret it to this day!

Angela Lansbury is so impressive. Such charm and intelligence. This is a great half hour. I'm surprised that the musical version of "Blithe Spirit", which was called "High Spirits", wasn't mentioned. I saw it in 1964, when I was in high school. Madame Arcati was played by Beatrice Lillie, who was quite a character. I would have loved to hear what Ms. Lansbury might have said about her.

I have the video of Gaslight with Angela Lansbury as the maid when Charles Boyer was driving Ingrid Bergman (his wife) crazy. This is such an interesting interview.

Just seen Blithe Spirit at the Gielgud Theatre , London. Great play, wonderful cast.But there's no doubt that Dame Angela is the star.

Just saw Blithe Spirit at the Stratford Festival with Seana McKenna as Madam Arcati. A fantastic play, and a wonderful character.

If I could get a message to Angela Lansbury it would be. I want to thank your family. For making murder she wrote the best show on the planet. I’d like to thank your brother. And your two sons and God bless your late husband. Murder she wrote would not exist without them and certainly not without you. Jessica Fletcher is the most wonderful character that you’ve ever played and if. There is anyone that I had left out. Then I apologize and I would like to say thank you to all of those that I forgot about. I have all 12 seasons of murder she wrote. And I love your character. Angela thank you so much for the 12 wonderful years of murder she wrote. I will carry that with me for the rest of my life. It’ll remain in my heart forever and I will definitely and always. Remain a loyal fan of you. And your character Jessica Beatrice Fletcher of Cabot Cove Maine the best darn. Murder mystery novelist I’ve ever watched.

Agreed! Charles Ludlam, the genius writer/actor/director behind the Ridiculous Theatrical Company in NYC was the greatest comic actor I ever had the good fortune to see, whether in male or (frequently) female roles. And thinking about Angela Lansbury's insightful comments about comedy and tragedy in this interview, Charles out-Garboed Greta Garbo as Marguerite Gautier (the Lady of the Camellias) in the great renunciation scene... hilarious and gut-wrenching at the same time. Some of my fondest memories as an audience member during those years are of the blissful hours spent in that basement theater in Sheridan Square. R.I.P., Charles.

+Easy Aspi I don't know if Dame Angela had any dance training, but it seems that dancers seem to maintain their flexibility and balance through late life...perhaps it's also the day to day routines which early dance training made mandatory. Saw Angela with the late Marian Seldes in DEUCE.

Angela Lansbury took dance lessons when she was young and I think she studied for quite a while.
