Theater Talk: "Fun Home" with Lisa Kron, Jeanine Tesori & Alison Bechdel

We focus on the musical “Fun Home,” with book writer/lyricist Lisa Kron and composer Jeanine Tesori who created this stunning, heart-breaking musical based on the memoir/graphic novel by Alison Bechdel about growing up in a troubled family and her relationship with her father prior to his suicide. Bechdel is also our guest on the program and the trio give us wonderful insight into the collaboration that transformed this unique bestselling book into an equally special and profound work of musical theater.
“Fun Home” received 12 Tony Award nominations including Best Book of a Musical (Kron), Best Original Score (Tesori/Kron), and Best Musical.

Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

These interviewers are terrible. Cracking tired jokes, interrupting Alison, having done no research - they didn't even know who the director of the show was! And how insensitive to just ask "Is your mother still alive?" Very poor show. Nonetheless I enjoyed this - these women are incredible.

BingleBanner Agreed 100%. Riedel's homophobic, misogynistic attitude is more than condescending. It's disgusting. Stop writing about the theater, Michael. You don't like it. You shouldn't "writing" about it.

+John V Riedel seems to be so nervous-- "sitting with lesbians", his laugh is so jerky. Distracting from the discussion. Every time a conversational 'run' gets going, he interrupts & ruins it. Idiot.

I thought the same. They were so insensitive, so uncomfortable. I'm glad the interviewees managed to save it and not get annoyed

Alison seemed to really struggle to hide her disdain for that question, and I don't blame her one bit. Also the way he phrased the question about family secrets, talking about "waiting for them to die"...there are tons of ways to ask that very question without awkwardly bringing death into it. Yikes all around.

I would love to see this. Although I'm not gay, I feel this is opening my heart and eyes to those in the Gay community. Everyone feels, and this is a remarkable example of that. Bravo!!!

That part of "he wants, he wants, he wants" has haunted me. I was in a very tense family relationship with a conflicted man not so unlike the father portrayed here. This song (Welcome to the House on Maple Avenue) perfectly phrased the prodding of living up to and fulfilling a person's wantings when their wantings were masked and troubled - yet driving the others around them to ... distraction and at the same time obsession. The song, even in it's melody and counterpoints portrays this driving yet disguised existence. As I say, for me...this song is haunting.

It's super haunting I agree. It builds that tension with its sonic structure not just the lyrics. It's brilliantly done

I love that Jeanine uses the idea of having the same person at 3 different ages sing a song together in another one of her musicals.( Shrek being the other one.) She went much further with the idea in Fun Home obviously.

Today's NPR interview with the "Fun Home" team on Fresh Air was much better. Michael might consider stepping aside and letting Susan run with the show. I've not watched the CUNY programs before. The only reason I would listen and watch again would be to hear the interviewees. It seems that from some of the comments below, I'm far from alone. Careful....
