Joe is largely responsible for Ohtani’s success. He allowed Shohei the freedom to develop his two-way play the way he trained to do (Japan) and not get held back by team analytics and eventually get forced into being a one-way player. Analytics are great, but they can’t predict or replace the human factor.

The reason is why Joe Maddon was successful with Ohtani because there is no data on two way player.. However, this game has been around for over 100 years. As a fan watching the Angels for the last three years, Maddon sucks at managing the bullpen. His decision stunk . He got fired with a loaded team with the Cubs. Maddon is too old for this game

Great interview. I thought the Angels made a mistake in firing him and I still think that. More to the point, I’m an economist and I see people fall in love with their analytical models and forget that they are modeling (mostly) human interactions and that precise predictions are nonsense. The proper role of analytics and models is hard to delineate, but absent judgment and experience, they will very likely lead you astray. Or at least, you need to know when to ignore the analytics, and a good economist, or a good baseball mind, will be able to bring judgments to bear that data and analysis simply can’t capture.

There is a KZfaq channel called Baseball isn't Dead. Well, guess what, it's dead. Pitchers focus on getting strike outs instead of getting outs. Hitters focus on their launch angles and hitting the ball out of the park. The game is now two dimensional. Pitchers rack up strikeouts and hitters rack up home runs. Hitting for average is out of fashion, and managers will take a starter out while he's pitching a no hitter or before they can notch a complete game victory. Baseball used to be exciting, now it's just souless and boring
