I'm reminded of a day in 97 when I watched dag crawl from the saloon to his cross country skis. He couldn't stand up he was so wasted and couldn't put on his skis. A young couple came over and helped him balance long enough to clip in and boom! Off like a shot, gliding away lol. I laughed so hard I nearly choked on my burger. The guy was always a riot to watch.

If you really want to see a documentary about the “ most elusive man in North America” watch Alone in the Wilderness about Dick Proenneke. He returned from Vietnam, and was kinda over everyone, and lived alone in a cabin in Alaska up into his 80s. He had one friend who brought supplies via bush plane every 3 months. The documentary doesn’t go into great detail about his philosophical discoveries, but follows his journal about how he was able to do what he did.

Had a neighbor kinda like that . He came back from WW2 , got married, raised a family , ran a farm . Did everything a man was supposed to do back then . And when the kids left home he sold the farm and moved up north of u-city about a hundred miles , would go into u-city once a year for supplies , no human saw him other than that

This was so pathetic and melodramatic the way it's narrated and the guy seems like one of those old guys who are super condescending and pretentious. @@rickszabo4312 don't assume anything about what I said my question was clear ..it didn't have anything to do with whether he contributed to society enough. The question was how self sufficient is he. I could care less how much he has contributed to society as far as I'm concerned he has contributed enough just by being a decent human being which he obviously is. What I'm wondering is how self sufficient he is..because if someone is bringing him groceries in a vehicle once or twice a month then obviously he's not very self sufficient.

@@rickszabo4312 just because someone is wondering around in the woods for 30 years doesn't mean they are self sufficient. I know because I did it myself. I've been wondering around in the woods for 30 years and I don't consider myself self sufficient at all. I'm just an introvert. People have lost the plot on what it means to be self sufficient in these comments. As far as I'm concerned this is just some old crazy introvert dude wondering around in the woods. If whoever is feeding him stopped feeding him he would probably come out of the woods to ask for help or just die from starvation. But to me he doesn't look self sufficient at all..not from what I saw in this video. I'm guessing the old dude has a kid or family member bringing him supplies every month.

I now ask myself before buying something do i really need this, will i use this? i look around me an ask if i die today how much trouble will i be for others to clear this mess, like my animals i worry about them being taken care of if something happened to me. It has been said by others but I will say it also: Great subject, abysmal documenting. 8 minutes into a 14 minute documentary is when the subject is finally revealed?! The majority of the documentary was not of the subject but rather the filmmakers' adventures talking to locals... which is pretty piss-poor if it took them a few weeks in Vernon to finally contact a local reporter who has written articles on the subject. The whole documentary seems like the directors just said, "Lets see if we can lazily find someone, record our vacation and then go home as soon as we find them," and of course not bother to actually get much documented except for maybe 3 quotes of substance and nothing more. This should have been much more substantial as Dag is getting quite old. Rather than focus on on the 'why he is up there' they should have focused at least on the 'how'. It may be selfish of others to ask him to share more of his life, but in a world where kids are glued to tablets, he is a source of inspiration.

For some, they need the company of others. For me, I can travel to the Sylvania Recreational Area, near Watersmeet, Michigan, in early May, after the ice goes off the lakes. Two portages later I'm on Whitefish Lake, alone for two weeks. I fish, I cook, I tend the campfire. I make a sail using two paddles and my rain pullover to sail across the lake. I read books. I play my harmonica. The solitude restores my soul and I'm very contented.

they didnt. That was just the editing they did, the road that takes you near his bus is a maintained skihill road, but you still have to get out on foot. I live in Vernon, and his bus has been lost in the bush for decades, the road it took to get to its spot is overgrown. You have to hike in and find it. ive looked for it, been around that area, he never advertised his whereabouts, just to his close friends.

@Carlos Danger there are many, many forest service roads that were made up to 80 years ago in that area, some were used once for surveying or logging inspection and then never used again. he drove it down a road that wasnt fully overgrown yet, and then let the road overgrow and conceal the bus. all you need to do is wait for him to eventually run down the main ski hill road for a jog one day and you will see him and you cant talk to him. they didnt find his bus, they found him going for a jog first. they even showed that in the video. i dont understand why its so hard to figure out. you cant find his bus easy, but you can find him jogging into town and going for a beer a lot easier

How he gets by in winter, does he hunt, is he a vegetarian, how long does it take him to finish the race, how long has he been doing it, what is this family. And the list goes on. A story that makes itself and they concentrate on the trees and people's opinion of him, the exact opposite of his philosophy. He is interesting, the reporters, terrible. They made the story about their editing skills and camera angles. Which if they are curious, both need a lot of work.

You know I think you nailed it, without meaning to. They did not go there to find an elusive man that most of the town knew. They could have ran into him 5 minutes after coming into town. He is not hiding, he is solitary. They went to do a story about him and spent so much time looking for him that they ended making a story much different than they had planned. I don't know why, but the short doc just feels wrong. Kind of like Neil Armstrong's 1st words when landing on the moon that everyone finds so profound, but actually make no sense. My 2 cents anyway.
