I bought this cassette back in the nineties - I will never forget endless hours on a bus to and back from school (Wroclaw - Poland) with my walkman grinding this album back and forth. Some rare albums are the soundtrack to a period of your life, how you define specific emotions, perceptions, visual landscapes. You will love them even when your taste inevitably drifts towards other subgenres... Once in a while you will listen to them and it will generate the same response as when they were your favorite. This is one of them.

Those aren't just songs, those are entire compositions and suites. Truly beautiful music and really, gothic. Such a pity there aren't bands like this anymore, that make real music like this. This album, also Aegis and Therion's Vovin are absolute classics and masterpieces. You can tell - just by how timeless they are - whether you listen to it in 1999, 2009 or 2019.. incredible. I'm sure Ill still be listening to these in 2029 too! ❤️

True gothic metal (as epitomised in this album) was a fleeting genre. This and other bands like Tristania, The Gathering, or Paradise Lost went on to some experimental, progressive rock. I miss those good old days when heavy rock/metal was mixed with doomy, atmospheric vibes. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z66FgNqa07yWcYU.html

I agree with you 100%. When I found this album back then somehow around 2000-2001 ... I got Velvet, Vovin and the first album form Haggard - And thou shall trust the seer... those albums entirely changed my musical world. Basiclly I listen them till now and I always will be. Those three bands + Type O Negative is the best what my ears could ever get to listen!

I'm so glad to see so many people still appreciate it. I guess those who can't, and younger generations, simply have an entirely new, maybe even sorta "mutated" idea and expectation of the nowadays' genre, and I think we all have one more important factor- we have profound, deep and really prescious memories with these musics and bands. Somehow it plays a big additional part there on a personal level, we associate it wholesomely with childhood, mid or late teens.. And they dont have that. Back in those days, things were much more, like, real. Getting a tape was a whole holiday. Meet with friends, like, physically, with long bubbly chat and meetup arrangements on the good ol' phone, go to the shop together, etc. It wasnt just everything in your phone and internet lol. As someone who ever since barely a toddler was raised with Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Dio, Rainbow, Ingwie Malmsteen, Siouxsie and the Banshees, David Bowie and such on my mom's side and Janis Joplin, Flitwood Mac, Jefferson Airplane and Jethro Tull on my dad's, getting into bands like ToT and Therion was a fully natural development for me and it felt so right and prescious. I really think in another, say, 50 or 80 years, this "golden age" of gothic rock should start to lean to the classic music category and be legit studied or something. The test of time is probably one of the most trustworthy criteria for quality. And ToT are among those that pass it with flying banners. 🖤
@dvortex668
@dvortex668 Жыл бұрын
@@taira_2032 Absolutely! You're right. I had very similar growing up. Just with a little difference that I was raised up on popular music from 80s, with bands like a Queen, Rolling Stones or even Beatles. Later on I switched to Nirvana and Metallica of course. And then I got 3 mentioned bands (ToT, Therion and Haggard) that changed my life forever - all of them on 1000x replayed unoriginal cassetes, where you could really heard a bad sound quality already and some songs were unfinished because of lack of tape. It was incomparable with a nowadays standards but I really didn't care. I felt like blessed. Like an whole heaven came to me. After that I discovered whole doom/black/death metal universe and I love it so much till now. And as you said, We lived in present time. No internet, no FB, social medias... We were groups of people, friends, music fanatics who spend time together, kept talking a lot, went to concerts... It was nice times. Now there is still a lot of young people who found their path to metal music. But they have a different sources. There is practicly everything on internet so they rarely listen whole albums. They keep downloading their favorite songs from sites like a spotify and listen singels from the favorite lists. But at least they love METAL and it's worth it! I must say the golden time for this kind of music was in the 90s. You can really feel it live performances from that time. That´s why I am ironicly very thankful for youtube because I can find almost everything there and at least enjoy that atmosphere a bit.

I was 15 years old. My grandmother Gave me 600 belgian franks to spend on the yearly town fair. I went to the future sound, a renomated cd store in Izegem, Lieven the boss pitched Velvet darkness they fear. I had to check it there on the cd players with a headphone. Yes boys and girls and woke things, you had to listen a few minutes and buy it. I bought this album. Best money ever spend. It would have been lost in the fair in a few minutes. Now i still enjoy my money! Ive been a metalhead for 30 years now. This album is one of the most important in my life. I have played it during mourning, drunk bbqs, orgasms, boring car rides, in the sauna.... This is great music. Cherish it. And Liv Kristine, as A teenager i dreamed about communicating with you! 1 από τα ίδια φίλε + κλασικό/power metal! Δεν ήμουν fan των άλλων “Beauty & the Beast” copy-paste συγκροτημάτων αλλά οι Theater of Tragedy απλά μεγαλούργησαν στα 90s! Επί πλέον ήταν το 1ο μου cd trading με 1 κορίτσι που μετά (στα τέλη του λυκείου) έγινε το κορίτσι μου! ....Αναμνήσεις!

As an ardent lover of doom/gothic music, 'Velvet Darkness They Fear', a full album by Theatre of Tragedy, has resonated perfectly with my musical senses. This album is profoundly dark yet beautiful, and much like a piece of romantic literature, it draws you into its complex textures and profound depth. Each track is meticulously crafted; there's a perpetual sense of mournful beauty intertwined with supremely heavy doom progressions. The dual vocal arrangement showcased in the album is extremely impressive, with Liv Kristine's soprano beautifully juxtaposed against the dark growls. It lends a distinctive dynamic and unique twist to the gothic/doom genre. The instrumental accompaniments are harmoniously heavy and the keyboard melodies deliver an ethereal quality that leaves an indelible imprint in your memory. Songs like "Fair and 'Guiling Copesmate Death" and "Der Tanz der Schatten" are hauntingly melancholic, demonstrating Goth rock in its purest form. The lyrics are poetic, gloomy, and touch on themes of despair, darkness, and death. This album is indeed a masterpiece. However, it might not appeal to everyone, especially those unfamiliar with doom/gothic music. Yet, for the fans of the genre, it is a gem, a perfectly distilled musical craftsmanship amidst the haunting darkness they fear. In conclusion, 'Velvet Darkness They Fear' can be described as an odyssey into the deepest quarters of gothic music, offering an emotionally intense, sonically breathtaking and lyrically profound journey that any doom/gothic music aficionado will appreciate. Theatre of Tragedy's triumphant effort in this album has solidified their standing in the genre, a testament to their impeccable blend of heaviness and melodious beauty. The Velvet Darkness They Fear, by the Theatre of Tragic is an album that has, in my heart, remained an emblem of powerful and emotive gothic/doom music since its release back in 1997. The album has stood the test of time, and every time I tune in, it brings back the nostalgia of that era while still sounding fresh and captivating.

WHY I`M HERE? FOR A REASON! I EVEN YEARS AGO BOUGHT THE T-SHIRT WITH THE ALBUM COVER ON IT! SO COOL! ME PERSONALY STATING RIGHT NOW- THE BEST TOT`S ALBUM MADE. LOVE THE OTHER`S TOO, BUT THIS ONE IS SPECIAL. ONCE I `VE MET LIV KRISTINE ON TOUR IN CHICAGO WITH ATR*CITY AND MOONS*ELL (ALREADY WITH "LEAVE`S EYES), VERY NICE PERSON. BUT SHE DIDN`T WANTED TO TALK ABOUT TOT ERA! AFTER HER`S DEPARTURE FROM THEBAND, THEY RIGHT-A-WAY HAVE HAD CHANGED THEIR STYLE. I ONLY TRIED, BECAUSE I`M BAND`S BIG FAN SINCE THE FIRST ALBUM, (ME OWN THOUGHT) STILL LISTEN TO IT ONCE IN THE WHILE. ACTUALLY, THIS TIME, I MAINLY PUT IT BACK ON TO LISTEN ONE TINY PART FROM - FROM 24:24 TO 26:05, part #5! ALWAYS WAS, SINCE THE FIRST TIME! THE WHOLE THING ROCKS, BUT "THIS ONE"! ONE OF THE FINEST PIECES EVER MADE IN THE WHOLE MUSIC HISTORY! THANX THEM FOR THAT! NO, THANK YOU ALL OF YOU GUYS (I MEAN THE WHOLE CREW, EVERYONE INVOLVED IN MAKING IT HAPPENED). -VERY MUCH!
