Oh CRAP! Somewhere I have a vest I made about 30 years ago. It has ten antique brass buttons, all different but about the same size. ALL of them have the "raised mark with the depressed channel" on the back. Some are from train and trolley conductor uniforms, one is a Civil War button you showed here. Most are from some type of uniform, and thanks to you I now know they are really old! I suspected they were at least Victorian. When I was a teenager I made all my own clothes and always bought buttons at garage sales. I hit the jackpot one day. Bought a huge box of old buttons from an estate sale. These buttons had come from the old lady's grandfather's tailor shop in NYC, @ 1900. In 1977, I was 16, but I knew this had to come home with me! Paid $5, all I had at the time. I think I still have most of those buttons, that vest alone likely has $1000! I need to go digging. I might be able to pay off my house!

Sorry if off-topic… I’ve had good luck selling vintage gold enameled Brioni buttons from jackets and coats that were damaged. Sets can sell for $50-$100. I found two jackets at local Goodwill for five and eight dollars each.

As always, another informative video from The Auction Professor. I always hit the old sewing tables at estate sales, you never know what you'll find. Never found anything like military buttons, but I did once find a pair of gold Tiffany cufflinks in a box of sewing stuff that I paid $3.00 for. I find more $10-30 ladies buttons than anything. The best part about the cheap buttons is selling them in mason jars for $25. Looking forward to the next video or livecast Don. Cheers!

Paper has taken me from part time to full time (hardwork and reinvestment and frugality also played a roll lol), and will start with buttons. Definitley interested in niche subject matter that most people pass up on and is cheap to buy (usually) and has potential. Definitely all key things for my reselling mind!

I am so glad I found you.. your information and showing us this.. you have no idea how much I am thankful for u. I have so much stuff, a attic full and basement... like everything, I guess that's what happens when your family lived in the same house for generations and then owned their own antique store. Some of the stuff I would had never thought or if I had researched, I didnt do a very good job. Nkw I will have to go really sort and organize so I can really get my selling on.. all this information, I already have learned so much. Still struggling with postcards. Stamps and cancels.. I will be watching your videos none stop.. thank you for being so kind.

I live in SE Michigan, we have Value World here, seems same as savers or value village, many Detroit area locations, so if you ever get the itch to thrift like the old days at savers, look up ValueWorld , also many times you can find 50% off coupons, especially on their FB Page. Thanks again for the free info, I just consume it all, been binge watching your vids the last 2 weeks, even though I been watching youtube resellers for years I just recently found you.

Amazing video brother. This video is an absolute must for collectors. I do have one thing to add… I dig tons of buttons in Oklahoma (indian war camp sites). Sometimes, A lot of the fronts are civil war with back marks that are post war. Vise versa/ raised shield prussian eagles with period back marks. Right after the war, a lot of the inventory of buttons were shipped out west. I believe just “thrown” together to make buttons. Question: you mentioned RMDC. Is that an indicator that the backmark is pre/civil war era?

My mother when she was a child in the 1950s in Western NY was playing in the dirt with her brother. She found red cloth in the ground and they saved the buttons from it. It had an arm and hand holding an arrow. Probably from the war of 1812. It never got appraised. We have never seen anything in a book that looks like it. It could had been a Native American regiment. Crazy to think that my parents old farm could have other things like that on there.

That would be a livery button, and not a military button. It would have been made well after the War of 1812 and wouldn't be military at all by the design you described. I have many just like that one.

Yes, some buttons you can clean using warm water and a tooth pick. Just never use harsh chemicals, wire brush that will remove the gold and silver gilt. I remove the nasty green corrosion and dirt with a tooth pick. You never buff a button, and I've seen many people buff the button and destroyed the value by 50%. But if you don't know what your doing, then leave it as is. Buttons in the past have been always cleaned by the wearer before uniform inspections, and they came with a button cleaning kits for the troops or police officers during the 19th century. If your a knowledgeable collector, you can tell if a button was recently cleaned or not. I love buttons.

Years ago while doing a landscape at an old Victorian home I found a flat button in the soil. In years past the home was visited by Matilda Dodge wife of John Dodge of the auto industry, and the house was not far from from her home Meadowbrook here in Michigan. Anyway, I found a flat button and has no design on the front at all. But the back has the simple loop, and the decoration is that there's arrows (triangle marks) that are continuous all around it, yet inside the circle of arrows on the outer edge of the button is the word BEST. Is BEST a button manufacturer, or does BEST mean it's the best they make? This flat button is thin metal (not that it's worn thin) like an old soup can and dark is brown, not like brass.Could this be a military button, but how old? I'm not a button collector, just have this one, and can I send you a pic of it? Thanks, and THUMBS UP!!

I was looking for buttons and found a pin stuck inside the very old sewing box I have. Its a baby Lenin USSR pin with red star and babys head in the middle. On the back it says 10k. I found one on ebay and they are dumping it for $2.49. Someone else is selling one for $5. Just wondering if this is worth more or that common? It came from the USSR.
