Tannoy is one of the older speaker manufacturers and a purveyor of the dual concentric design, similarly used in the KEF LS50 as well as the Elac UB5. And they certainly made an impression with me, when I first heard it years ago; and although I got the KEF LS50 at the time, some part of me was hoping I got the XT8F instead. Well now we come back to it compare it to the KEF LS50, as well as the Tekton Impact Monitors.

I've had my Tannoy XT8 Fs for about a week. They are exactly as you describe, however, for me, in my system, they outperform my LS50s. I used to rotate the LS50s with other speakers I have, but I have no urge to listen to anything but the XT8 Fs now. I have a pair of Harbeth 30.2 monitors on the way, so things might change when they arrive. Keep up the good work. I always look forward to your reviews.

That room is tiny! How can you review a floor stander in that room? Of course a tiny LS50 will sound better!
@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 5 жыл бұрын
I suppose some floorstanders sound better if played louder or have bigger space to "bloom", but I've had floorstanders that sound good in my room like Zu Audio and Monitor Audio Bronze 5. Also, I tried it a little bit in my living room driven by Arcam A39s and it also lacks midrange vs Dirty Weekends and trounces the Zus at everything else. But again, the XT8F sounds fine as it is, just lacking mids to complete the package for me.

How big is your listening room? XT8f needs wide space.. If you listen them in a bigger room, the result would be different quite a lot especially when comparing with LS50..
@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 5 жыл бұрын
My listening room is about 10'x17'. It's not that big but I don't think having a bigger room will improve the midrange and I can already hear the holographicness of the XT8F as it is. It's true though that the size does affect the speakers as my living room is about 24'x19', and the LS50 does not sound as good there with only a little acoustic panels.

XT8f has a lot of bass extension.. in a small room, sometimes bass frequency can mask and interfere the other range..
@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 5 жыл бұрын
@@taeheeyoon6020 They do have a lot of bass extension, and certainly goes down lower than 40hz. In my room, the bass was overpowering in the Alicia keys song, but I attribute that to the response curve of the speakers, since in Trials of the Past, both Tekton and LS50 produce more SPL than the XT8F in the 3 bass notes as I mentioned in my review. But I do get your point, that maybe the speakers need space to "bloom", and should've done more testing in my living room.

I think the '8s are too big for this room. The XT6F would be better suited. I have the LS50 and the XT6F. Both have more strong points than weak points. Also, I found the Tannoy having more natural mid-range than the LS50. Bass guitars are there now, as well as woody overtones on drums and piano, whereas they were missing on the LS50.
@JPWinters
@JPWinters 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Audiofool, wow, what a helpful video! I have my next speakers mostly narrowed down to the XT 8F or a Tekton (lots of models to choose from). I am particularly interested in good, natural midrange for guitars and vocals, with slightly laid back highs, so this review told me exactly what I needed! I tried the Monitor Audio Bronze 5 and they sounded very hot and had sibilance compared to my 16 year old Monitor Audio B4's, which are much more laid back (a bit too much but still preferred over being too hot). Even my Cerwin Vega RE-38 towers sounded much more smooth, balanced, and overall better than the Bronze 5's. I was looking at the Tekton towers (Enzo XL, Pendragon, etc) but should I be looking at the smaller Impact Monitors? I plan to pair with a Rhymik subwoofer. The room is 13x12 feet. I don't think I want to spend $3000 on the Double Impacts. Over $2000 is pushing it for me. I listen to metal, the kind with lots of clean vocals, fast guitars, keyboards etc. Also wondering if the KEF Q950 & JBL 590 would be good choices.
@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Regarding the Tektons, I'm sorry but I don't know which model would fit you best as they have lots of speakers at the price range you mentioned. Best to check with Tekton themselves. Personally, I prefer bookshelves and quite happy with the Impact Monitors, but the Perfect SET looks quite interesting with its 12" woofer. At the size of your room, you probably don't need a subwoofer so maybe try it without first. What are you going to drive the speakers with?
@JPWinters
@JPWinters 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheAudiofool Thanks for the reply. The Perfect SET looks like a good option. I'm considering that and the Enzo XL currently. Both front ported, which I'm looking for since I will be sticking them in the corners. For metal I found a sub is really essential, even if using huge speakers like the Cerwin Vega RE-38's, which have 15" woofers. I am currently using an Onkyo SR702, which is an older model that uses Burr Brown DAC's, 100W per channel, and allows for bass management for my sub. I am considering the Outlaw RR2160 but would like to try the Onkyo first. I am really not fond of bright or fatiguing speakers. Do you think I would experience that more-so with either the XT 8F or Tekton flavors?
@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 5 жыл бұрын
@@JPWinters The XT8F is brighter than the Impact Monitor, but I don't find it fatiguing though perhaps at my threshold. Do try it out with the Onkyo first since there's no harm in trying, and maybe you won't find the need to change it.

Hello, thanks for a great review. I have both Kef LS50s and a pair of Tannoy XT6 small bookshef, so instead of an 8 inch coaxial driver, I have a 6 inch one, but the same mid-range signature sound as the XT8F. I think both speakers have their strengths, but specifically regarding the "thinness" that you speak about the tannoys, I would agree, but I would add that is one of their greatest attributes. My Tannoys, indeed sound thinner than the KEF LS50s, but to me it is because they are extremely fast and are able to separate the instruments in a way that the KEF LS50 is not capable of. What this means is that for complex multi-instrument music, where you have unique percussions, violins or similar, the Tannoy will be able to sing IMO better than the KEFs. Unfortunately however, because of that thinness they will need an amplifier with much more headroom, otherwise they will sound not only thin, but possibly flat. I drive them with a high current 200w/channel amp and that does the trick...mostly. A good piece to showcase what I am talking about is "Hijaz" from the "Hadouk Trio", which has amazing eastern percussions.
@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I agree with what you said, mids are thicker in the LS50s but will have trouble with more complex passages. I do not agree with having a more powerful amp, because I've heard the XT8Fs with 30w tubes and they sound quite better compared with some high powered amps, so it's really more on what amp you like. That said, every speaker is just different and no speaker will be perfect, but there will be a perfect one for you... until you find something better lol.

@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 4 жыл бұрын
I can't tell as I havent had the chance to hear it in my room, but sound should be similar. I think I would prefer the XT6Fs as I found the Silvers to be too boring for my tastes, but you may have different tastes.

@@TheAudiofool I have heard Silver 200 & 300 at the same demo & 300s were quite a bit better. Have not heard Tannoys but am aware they have had good reviews. Mids in 300s are supposed to be good. Is it only the silver 200s you have heard ? I may know what you mean about the Silver's there may not be too much going on. Is that why you think Tannoys may be better ?
@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 4 жыл бұрын
@@Chris-nd5se The Silver 300s were the ones I heard. They're quite well balanced and all, and they have more solid surefooted bass compared to the Tannoys, but the Tannoy's are livelier, at least in my treated room, and they have a more extended sharper highs and louder looser lows, that makes it a bit more exciting. But if you've heard the silvers, and it's the sound you're looking for, then go for it.
@Chris-nd5se

@@TheAudiofool Just wondered whether Tannoy's may be harsher sounding with poor recordings, as with Silver 300s treble is rolled off a little. I did think 300s were good value, also they look nice and have had good reviews but I agree you could say they were a bit ordinary sounding. Do you think one would need more power than the other to get the best out of them, my amp is only 33 watts pc
@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 4 жыл бұрын
@@Chris-nd5se It may be a little harsher with poor recordings. As for power, my belief is that power is only needed for reaching your desired volume. If you still have some ways to go before max volume and it's not distoring at that level, then you should be fine. It's more important to have an amp that you like the sound of; for example, I like the sound of my 20w aegir vs arcam a39 120w, vs peachtree audio nova 300 300w, as it gives the best fluidity in the mids. That said, your 33w amp should be able to handle 2.9ohms minimum if you want the Tannoys while the SIlvers are a bit easier needing min 3.6ohms.

I had XT 6F's and sold them after one year. I couldn't stand the bright sound. They had elevated and harsh treble, thin midrange and little boomy bass. They sounded best in big room and with smooth amplifier. Too much bass in small room. Bought them second hand from UK under 500 € and sold 700 € 🙂

I didnt really find the 8F to be bright, and as mentioned in the review, it was quite enjoyable for me until I compared it to other speakers lol. Great price on the 6Fs, the 8Fs was bought for about EUR 750 and sold at 1k.

Thanks for watching. While it is specified as an 8ohm speaker, the impedance goes as low as 2.9ohms @100hz so AVRs and some amps will get a bit hot paired with this speaker.

If you have a large room the R3 would be a better choice. For a smaller room, I would go with the LS50 as I still find it better for vocals, but if you listen more to bass intensive songs, go with the R3.

Use a pillow take the fibre out split it in half Each speaker Are there 8 Ohm the Bass Drivers? if so put an ceramic 8.4ohms 10 watt resistor across the terminals. @TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 4 жыл бұрын
Bass is definitely better in the XT8F as the Zu's have tubby sound and decay is noticeably longer. I find the midrange to be better in the Zus, although the imaging is not as tight. Highs are much better in the XT8Fs although the Zus can be passable if you have the clarity cap upgrade. The XT8Fs are currently in sale in the UK and I think it's worth it at the sale price (not at retail though).

Wow - more bass from LS50s!? - this is an 8" floorstander! At 91db sensitivity these speakers should be easily enough driven from even a 50W amp - what amp are you using? HiFiPig review is not so damning.
@TheAudiofool
@TheAudiofool 5 жыл бұрын
Let me just first clarify that the XT8F goes lower than the LS50 and goes lower than 40hz in my room. I just mean that the LS50 does more bass volume in Trials of the past, as the XT8F does more in the Alicia Keys track. Also, according to hometheaterhifi.com, the XT8F impedance can go as low as 2.9ohms at 100hz, so while it might play loud easily, it will take a lot of amp grunt to make it sing. I tried the speakers out on Schiit Ragnarok, Pioneer M22 and Freya +, Marantz SR5012, Onkyo A9150, all to the same effect. I have not read the Hifipig review, but will check it out. What did they compare it to? I did not mean to be so damning hahaha and as I mentioned, I did enjoy them a lot.

It's the amps... the Tannoy are not so hot with a single amplifier. It's a very dynamic speaker... and I have NO CLUE why it demands a real 2/4 ohm stable amp with 200+ WPC. Other than that, they sound lean... very lean.

As you probably know already, the speaker placement is critical. Here’s why: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bshhipqCzNfMgmw.htmlm56s | www.cardas.com/room_setup_main.php | www.mh-audio.nl/acoustics/ CancellationFreq.html | www.mh-audio.nl/Acoustic.html#d | realtraps.com/art_basics.htm . You have acoustic panels, that’s great, but how many bass traps...anyway your room geometry dictates a completely different speaker placement. Please think about it especially if you want to become a reputable speaker reviewer. You can make a great listening room out of your 10x17x? room. Just follow the rules: realtraps.com/art_room-setup.htm

The Audiofool yeah, I imagine it does. I never got to audition the 8F but it’s a larger speaker so it makes sense that it’s got a fuller sound. I was thinking that maybe the 6Fs would be better suited to your room given its size. Anyway, continue reviewing audio equipment, you’re quite good at it. Cheers!

Without extensive acoustic room treatment using many bass traps from floor to ceiling on all walls, you are wasting your time reviewing speakers. A small room can sound great with big speakers with extensive acoustic treatment. Having to match the speaker size with the room size is total rubbish.

Mancano i medi?
