The "Consolation" or "Belated" Oscar. I'm not saying that _The Departed_ was a bad movie and not worthy of winning Best Director, but Scorsese losing for either Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino was simply criminal.

@@fabrislemos Absolutely correct! Director Michael Mann knows how to pull riveting performances from his actors. Russell Crow for The Insider, Tom Cruise for Collateral, and the entire cast of Heat, all should have gotten Oscars. Michael Mann never winning an Oscar for Best Director is just criminal. Ridley Scott is another director who was unceremoniously snubbed by the Academy.

As the guy who has not yet seen Schindler's List, I can clearly say that the Fugitive was an excellent movie that wouldn't have worked without Tommy Lee Jones. He's that supporting actor who really is a second lead. Also, it could have been because they wanted to give that award to someone other than a Spielberg film. His two (two of his best and the most iconic) together won ten Oscars. That could have heavily influenced the ceremony

Tom Hanks’ milquetoast performances beating those of real actors Daniel Day-Lewis, Anthony Hopkins, Morgan Freeman and Paul Newman is sickening. Oscars awarded to Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone are egregious transgressions to good taste. YES!! I SO AGREE WITH YOU!!! Ted Levine getting absolutely no nominations all award season was baffling. It takes a lot of courage and skills to portray a character so complex and sociopathic, and I think he and Brooke Smith's performances were extremely underrated. I think unfortunately due to the controversy of transphobia in TSOTL surrounding Bill and the stereotyping of LGBTQ+, it was definitely one of the biggest reasons why he wasn't nominated for anything.

How would you have felt if Gloria Stewart had won Supporting Actress for TITANIC? Yes, I know that movie already won a bajillion Oscars and Stewart doesn't have a ton of screen time, but she is such a memorable part of that movie, and her face and narration are very haunting and a huge part of why it has such emotional resonance. It's also an accomplishment that you really believe her and Kate Winslet are playing the same character, despite them looking and sounding so different.

That's my pick too, she was the heart of the whole movie. She made the character of Old Rose so memorable and deep especially with the good iconic lines she got to say like "a woman's heart is a deep ocean of secrets" etc. She probably came close to winning as she tied the Sag award with Kim Basinger plus she was a Hollywood veteran so she did have a lot of goodwill. This would've been a career win that I don't think people would have hated. When people think of the movie, they don't just think of Jack and Rose. They also think of her and her narration and yes she and Kate Winslet were so well cast as their young and old counterparts.

I think the main thing is exactly Benini's ACTOR win. His performance is really quite farce-y, bafoonish, over the top comedy and not in the way/style of the Academy. I was, as a European and a huge Italian cinema school fan kinda flattered for Academy choice for the Best Picture - deep down disagreed (Central Station is more of a universally deep and cinematic language-wise more relatable, self-explanatory movie), but understood. Sentimental, positive but WAR FILM. Hollywood adoooores WW2 ( and WW1 and any war to be honest)))) done with terrifying and gore detail and not as a backdrop, but as a main theme))) but choosing Benini for the Best Actor - ahem.... I almost fell off of my chair and not in the best way)) my parents watched the live broadcast with me that night, mum also was shocked, dad (a theatrical director) said - well, someone in the Academy finally had developed A GOOD TASTE))) For him Benini was great, exactly because this performance was over the top and absolutely different in a row of typical, predictable wins from decades before. But for me and mum it was a bit too much, felt wrong. The same win would be great in the Berlin, Cannes, Venice cultural and traditional frame, sure. But Hollywood trying to play "unconventional" in order to NOT GIVE IT to the ones who truly are deserving of the prize - that's... .... that's... that's both silly and vile to me.

Benigni winning over Ian McKellen and Edward Norton was so egregious, it's not like the win did wonders for his career anyway. I never got the hype for John Wayne, guy never really showcased that much range in his career. Personally my favorite Western movie star is war hero turned actor Audie Murphy. It is upsetting that Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole never won Oscars. At least Peter won an honorary Oscar but Richard was treated so dirty by the film industry. Same feeling about that Kim Basinger win, there were better choices like Minnie Driver for Good Will Hunting and Gloria Stuart for Titanic. To me she's more as a pretty faced actress rather than someone with range.

What about Julianne Moore for Boogie Nights the year of Good Will Hunting and Titanic?

Yes! A shame Burton and O’Toole never won. Both so good in Becket. Would’ve been cool if they tied for an Oscar, like Katherine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand did one year. Sorry can’t remember the year. Esther S.

@@BFA100 I'm not a fan of Boogie Nights but Julianne Moore wouldn't have been a bad win for sure.

@@garyschwartz6777 Yeah and I don't mind career Oscar wins as long as the actor finally wins one. Richard and Peter should've gotten that luxury. Richard's last nom was for Equus and many thought he would pull off a consolation win (he did win a Golden Globe) but he lost to another Richard. Richard Dreyfuss for The Goodbye Girl.
