for those who don't know, neutrinos are these stupidly small ridiculous particles which can pass through matter without touching a few atoms, hundreds of billions of them pass through our body every second and since they rarely ever interact with matter, it's very hard to detect them. One way to detect them is filling a stupidly large room with soapy water with sensors everywhere, when a neutrino interacts with the water in the tank, it produces a trail which is detected by the sensors, it's one of the biggest breakthroughs of modern physics and is actually very amazing and interesing. And also, y'all wanna stop asking absolutely stupid ass ridiculous questions ?! It's annoying now..
@yeastnecklace3 ай бұрын
while their size does play a huge part, the reasons they don’t often interact with matter has more to do with them having an incredibly minuscule amount of mass (so hardly any gravitational interaction), as well as having no charge. also i believe the number of neutrinos that pass through your body every second is closer to *_hundreds of trillions!_* such fascinating little particles

Let me do a little explaining 1.) This device is meant to find dying stars that at the end of their lives give off nutrinos from atomic decay, nuclear reactors give them off too. 2.) They use PURE WATER, (NOT DEIONIZED, NOT HEAVY, NOT DISTILLED; PURE FUCKING WATER). They used to use other liquids but pure water is more affordable and cost effective. Pure water is not safe for consumption, it wants to absorb the minerals in your body. 3.) The sensors all around the chamber detect the change in the water when a nutrino passes through it thats why they need a liquid. 4.) These observatories are built deep undergound and far away from nuclear powerplants to filter out cosmic rays and other radiations. (Nutrinos have 500,000 times less mass than a single electron and only interacts with matter via the weak force or gravity which is exceptionally weak due to its very low mass and does not participate in electro-magnetic interaction or the strong force so they pass through all mass unlike radiation which can only go so far through matter). 5.) Thats all i'm willing to say after 5 mins of googling, im no expert.
@benturner26933 ай бұрын
Neutrinos do have mass, just a very very tiny amount, hence they do not quite travel at the speed of light. The problem is they interact very weakly with very few, if any, types of particles/matter. Radiation, as you call it, is just photons of light at varying wavelengths, hence different frequencies and different amounts of energy. The energy of the radiation (photon) will partly determine what it will and won't interact with e.g. get absorbed by, hence the photoelectric effect etc. My point is things with no mass (photons of light, literally nothing else can be massless or it would travel at the speed of light and hence BE light, unless the current Standard Model is incomplete or wrong) DO still interact with stuff and do get absorbed, whereas neutrinos which have a TINY amount of mass and so travel a fraction slower than the speed of light, are super hard to detect and who knows why? Hence this super sized detector. The best detectors at the moment are tanks of pure water in Antarctica.

@@benturner2693 You should copy this post into the original thread. You have given a much better explanation than any other that I have seen here.
@benturner26933 ай бұрын
@@spaceman081447 thank you sir, you are indeed kind. I don't understand quite how the large tanks of pure water assist with neutrino detection though, hopefully someone else can explain that part! I think it's something to do with the way the pure water is disturbed by neutrinos passing through, which can be measured to infer the path and presence of a neutrino...
@bendingwarrior13 ай бұрын
Not only that, but as far as UFO's go, Neutrinos are released by them almost as CO2 is emmited by humans. It's like a chemical reaction resulting in the neutrinos as a bi-product
