The Balancing Act

The Balancing Act

Күн бұрын

Narcolepsy is described as a chronic neurologic condition in which the brain is not able to control normal sleep-wake cycles. It’s a condition that affects around 1 in 2000 people in the US. and is often overlooked and poorly understood because many disorders have some of the same symptoms. We’ll learn more about this often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed disorder and hear one woman’s journey to get her symptoms under control. Dr. Raj Dasgupta, a Pulmonary Critical Care Sleep Specialist who has dedicated his career to educating patients, students, and aspiring doctors helps us understand the disease and how patient’s lives are affected.

For years I knew something wasn’t right but when I tried to explain how tired I am it seemed nobody would take me seriously, even family. Was finally diagnosed this year with narcolepsy. I cried a cry of relief knowing that something was in fact not right.

Im 57 and I've been living with narcolepsy cataplexy most of my life. Not all sleep specialists are as knowledgeable as this one. Christine...👍nicely done, thanks for bravely sharing your story. I was very encouraged⚘God Bless you.

It never took me 6+ doctors to be diagnosed. Just as this lady in the video, once the Neurologist couldn’t figure out what was wrong, he sent me then to the Sleep Doctor. I then got a sleep study done and found out I had Narcolepsy and Sleep Apnea 😩 I hate having Narcolepsy!

The worst is driving home from work stuck in 5 o'clock traffic. Doze off, someone honks at your and you floor the gas and realize traffic hasn't moved and about have a panic attack.

Exactly! That’s why I stopped driving. I only drive to the nearest gas station. Otherwise my husband drives and I often fall asleep during the ride.

As someone who has had full-on Type 1 N + C for the past 10 years, I've noticed that there should be more emphasis on the difference between sleepiness and tiredness when explaining the symptoms of Narcolepsy.

family can be the WORST abuse for those who have a challenging disability. she needs to realize this and that people who are are ONLY a very few numbers of people on this earth. When you realize this, you can come to real turns with it better. narcolepsy can be a tough room.

Currently getting diagnosed. I hear things before I sleep, I get sleep attacks in public and my body goes limp when I laugh or other emotions make my legs give up or arms or face. The only thing I don’t experience is sleep paralysis, that happens less. It’s mostly sleep attacks, and the cataplexy and hearing/ seeing things.

I struggled every day at school. Never told anyone. I was so sleepy that on recess in elementary school I was so sleepy I was playing on a monkey bar. I was fighting sleep and fell face first from a 6 foot monkey bar.

Honestly I got no clue if I have narcolepsy. The doctor doesn't think so cause I don't experience cataplexy, hallucinations or sleep paralysis. Currently we're debating between whether it's CFS or severe inattentive ADD that's so severe I'm literally asleep (pretty inattentive, right?). We've done a sleep study and the results weren't indicative of narcolepsy, so it seems ruled out. I hope I find the truth soon! All the best to anybody with narcolepsy or any of the symptoms, I very much hope you're receiving the correct treatment!

It is possible to have narcolepsy without cataplexy. I have both but I have heard of people who just have N.

There’s good doctors in Colorado. I have severe narcolepsy and I have two different medications and they have recently raised my meds because I was still going to sleep. There was even a gene test they took as well
