When will you make a video on how to actually create depth using EQ and reverb. It would be cool to hear you talk about interaural time difference, the "Fletcher-Munson Curve" when using equalization, the "Haas Effect" when implementing spacial design, and the "Phantom Fundamental Effect" when recreating low end frequencies. These are some things I've heard other people talk about but wanted to hear your side of it cause you seem to really help break them down as well.

So for metal music for example, would that be a genre in which automation would be a good tool to use early for the double kick for example. Because EQ and compression will get you so far. But if you took care of it in the beginning with gain automation wouldn't that help.

Very informative, thanks! I have a question though, what about gain staging? Have seen a lot of information about this step before mixing, how it improves the performance of plugins...
@Loris_remix
@Loris_remix 2 ай бұрын
from what I was reading about this because im on the same quest as you, gain staging as it pertains to performance of plugins is valuable when a plugin modeled after analog equipment requires a certain level of input (before the plugin) to work optimally. Especially as it pertains to recordings from microphone and such, for example making sure the recording is going into the plugin hot enough for the plugin to color that sound optimally. In this case of recordings or analog modelled plugins you would use a VU meter, found freely online, to set the level to 0 before it goes into the plugins, then mix from there. Lets say you have an analog modelled compressor, or equalizer or saturation on a bus that has recorded vocals, you can use the VU meter before those plugs, to get the level to 0. Then,... AFTER the compressor, eq, saturator, you can use your fader knobs to MIX the level in the overall mix of the song. If youre not using analog modelled plugins, like for most of electronic music, then this may not be as much of an issue. For example, if you have a serum bass going into OTT, this shouldnt be much of an issue because OTT is not analog modelled. I dont really use analog modelled plugs so i dont usualy ensure that my level is 0 on the VU meter before i give it plugins. What does give a clear mix, is making sure that the average level of your sounds, for example that serum bass, doesn't hit 0db and sits low in the mix. If its only serum on a bus it should be mixed (and this is up for debate) to like -10 to -6 db so you have enough headroom to play with it later. From my experince training your ears is still best and listening where they sound in the mix. Gain staging in EDM may not be as relevant as gain staging in projects that are using a lot of recordings and analog plugs, like rock or something.

Ok so I have watched so many videos on mixing and mastering it's mind numbing. I'm going to give this a shot , I just listened to the before and after and definitely something there. But.....I have to say this first that so many of these videos fail to mention is how was the song recorded imo that should be mentioned at the very start was it recorded in a bedroom or a studio ? By an engineer?? The recording process is the most important process .
@TheBandGuide

It's a great point! This song was actually completely recorded in a home studio by me. The vocals and bass were recorded about 10 years ago with a cheap mic into an old m-audio interface. We retracked the guitars last year direct in and used Logic amps for all the sounds and the drums are all logic drums.

What were the vocals tracked with?
@TheBandGuide
@TheBandGuide 3 ай бұрын
Man, we recorded these vocals... 10 years ago, I think? (currently reworking this song for a rerelease, but keeping the final vocals) So, I'm not positive, but it was likely an old Sterling Audio Tube mic. I think the ST69? And likely just direct into an old Motu or M-audio interface. Not glamorous at all! If I were to track these today, I would likely go with a UAD modeling mic into my Apollo twin. But the real takeaway is that even a cheapish mic and a cheapish interface can yield great results.

Logic Master is pretty good but it becomes a major crutch if you rely on it too much. It’s totally serviceable but kills most of the depth that your song has. Plus, learning to to fully mix and master on your own is very important if you plan on actually working as a producer.
