On February 29th, 2012, in the 8th race at Charlestown Racetrack. A filly named Sharp Beauty brokedown causing a severe chain reaction that results in every horse losing its rider except #3 Miss Fifty, skillfully ridden by veteran jockey Oswald Pereira. Except for the horse that brokedown, all horses seem to have come out with minor injuries.

I know it's been addressed by others, but for those who criticize the jockey for not stopping: Even if he could stop on the spot (which is not realistic, horses do not stop on a dime, and for their own safety they need to be cooled down) there's nothing he could do to help the fallen horses or the fallen jockeys, not while holding a hot, revved-up, thousand-pound animal. He and his mount are much safer getting away from the accident and any loose horses. Outriders and ambulances are on site to assist the injured, human and equine.

Chane Kawaihae To stop on a dime at the speed they reach within a few steps from the starting gates will break their legs... Even a normal horse can't stop on a dime at around 40 mph and race horses have long skinny legs which will snap like twigs with that amout of pressure.

Even if the jockey wanted to get off and help there is no way he would have been able to stop the horse. He did very well to control it at the end too when the others galloped past

When a thoroughbred sees the track, they are ready to go all at once. They are bred to run and they will. Even if this jockey wanted to stop, I doubt he could make the horse. As you could see from the other horses that finished the race after him without their jockeys.

Tongue click is mostly for use with newer animals but for familiars, establish dialog and vocabulary. Ask them questions too, with up-tone as if you were asking a question. Many years with animals. Spent a lot of time around horses through friends and happenstances. Though they didn't know me real well, bonds were made quickly. I treated them like a person/pet/friend/gift because they are. But they are also an entity that can kill you with 1 kick, which is where situational awareness, threat assessment, reaction ability at all times and other trainings not quite on topic. Respect and health to you, and for you to give to your horse. The rest will follow. If you read, go read out by her for a while. When she eats, you bring a meal and eat with her (perhaps make yourself a meal that won't harm her/them if you share some as a treat). You ask to ride her ? Give her your time and as much heaven as possible in return. Ask her if she wants to "ride today" or not; like people, they can be in a bad mood or sad, or injured or just wants to sun bathe or be groomed. Ask her what she/they want. I'm not a boss, I'm not an expert, but I do boast I am a master student and animals are one of my greatest respects for reasons also not on topic. Hope this helps. +Molly Daniel Races are routinely held in mud/slop. For safety reasons, races will be cancelled for icy conditions, and possibly for severe thunderstorms. But not for rain or slop. Actually, a yielding/deep track is less likely to hurt a horse than a hard, dry, unyielding track. Some horses actually do better in mud, and some sloppy tracks are fast. When running on a sloppy tracks, many horses are fitted with mud caulks, pieces that stick out from the shoe in order to give a better grip, similar to treads on shoes.

@ShipofUAE If you continue watching, after the race concludes, you will notice multiple riderless horses. Every horse in the race except the 3, lost their riders, so there were 7 loose horses without a rider. The horse you see following the 3 down the stretch, is the #1 who actually threw the jockey before the incident down the backstretch.

It's quite sad to read the comments and see so many uninformed people who don't know anything about horse racing, or horses in general. No, starters who didn't crash could NOT have stopped and "helped" the fallen jockeys, the horses are trained to continue no matter what, as you see, some of the horse who felt did also continue even AFTER crushing (which looked quite bad). Also remember it's still a competition, and they probably payed more than what you make a year, even to compete in this race, so get your facts straight before you make dumb assumptions.

Black butterfly (and Kelsie B) As I and others have tried to explain in comments here, the safest thing the still-mounted jockey can do for himself and his horse -- and the fallen horses and jockeys -- is to GET AWAY from the spill and from any loose horses. Finishing out the race has far more to do safety than it does with money: even if it was obvious a horse would be finishing far out of the money, no jockey would be pulling up to try to help fallen comrades. Outriders on calm horses, and human and horse ambulances, are on site to help the injured. As to Black butterfly's related point: jockeys are the most underpaid of professional athletes. Only a small fraction earn six- or seven figure incomes. This was an allowance (meaning 2nd tier) race at a bush league track. Not a stakes race, in which owners put up money to compete. The total purse here was $28,000. That's not $28,000 to the winner; it's the *total* purse, distributed among a varying number, depending on the race/track/state, of entries. A common distribution system would allot 60% to the winner. Sixty percent of $28,000 is $16,800. A jockey gets 10% of his/her mount's first-place earnings, and a smaller percentage, I believe, of its other earnings. So the winning jockey here won about $1,680. Though most races these days pay out well beyond fourth place, no other horse finished this race, so every other jockey here got -- nothing. Normally, second place probably would have gotten about 18% of the total purse. Top jockeys, most of whom ride in New York or California, can become multimillionaires, and some who fall short of that still make a very good living. But most jockeys -- certainly most jockeys riding at a minor track like Charlestown -- work in obscurity, risking life and limb for earnings that will never make them wealthy.

I got of and stopped her horse because it's galloping after us (like the once in this video) and my friend was fine, so before u go on about something know NOTHING about I'd like to see you pull up a high strong racehorse on a track going 40 miles per hour, okay?😉

If you know horses at all you would realize that they run because they are flight animals and are running from danger. They will naturally flee and go as fast as possible. Thoroughbreds are bred to be able to run but are not doing it for fun. Man is tapping into the fear and using it for their own gain as usual!

When horses race around the field, they are not running from fear! I have seen a group of horses after a rain, run to get warmed up. If you train a horse kindly they will run their hearts out for you. If you hit them too hard, they quit going to the front, so you would be losing one way or the other.

The most heartbreaking thing I've ever seen on the racetrack with a horse is when a mare broke her leg and her jockey or a jockey after finally getting her to stop, trying to support her weight with his body so she wouldn't hurt her leg more. I"ll always remember that jockey desperately trying to hold her up so she wouldn't put any body weight on the broken leg. He was crying, calling for help. I don't know if it was Ruffian or not. I was crying sitting in my living room at home, it was so sad.

Cats don't really have great stamina, so depending on the race horse's training, he may be able to outdistance a lion. However, a lion pride will run their prey down in a relay. (Jan Griffiths).

Hi everyone Pro jockey0p here. I race out of north east Ohio and about to start riding out of Churchill. These aren't trail horses. They can't stop. You have a a now spooked horse trying to get away from the panic along with what these horses are trained to do, run the track. The remaining rider did a great job. As far as conditions go the track only closes when there's thunder and lightening or ice. We race in hard rain blizzards anything. Remember to those who don't know about racing this is a business owners riders trainers patrons out riders valet pony ect. Don't get paid. It looks like a very unfortunate accident 😕. And is probably my worst feet. They called for the inquiry mean it has to go to the stewards to be reviewed is there was an illegal advance a pile up box out. When something happen where a riding is coming up on you and there's something illegal like rubbing happening its then that riders ob the visibly stop riding. Not stop clearly indicates Iyou're no longer riding because you were fouled and it either changed the course of the race and the winner or made the Race dangeous. Stanibg uo posing. This is may have just been a bad accident the rider in the lead horses stumbled. Be safe put there to my fellow riders out there. Say a prayer for me when like I said this is my worst fear as a jockey/rider.

The only horse that was euthanized was Sharp Beauty, the horse in the lead that fell and caused the pile up. The other horses suffered some bruises, muscle strain, and cuts but none were life-threatening. @marysueeasteregg 4 жыл бұрын
As Kaya Rose says, a well prepared muddy track is just as safe as a dry track. The tracks most disposed to breakdowns, actually, are very dry, hard ones with no cushion. Tracks are designed so that they can be very sloppy on top while still having a solid surface underneath -- racing on a sloppy track is not similar to horses running in a super-muddy paddock. And the horses can run with mud caulks, special shoes with knobs, though there is disagreement about whether they are useful or not. Some think the special shoes changes the horses' gait in a potentially dangerous way. Horse races get cancelled for safety issues due to icy conditions (and lightning). Slop/mud is not a safety issue.

You watch this video and see the riders as riders or jockeys, rather than human beings; with families, friends, emotions etc. yes it's a shame for the horses of course it is! But just remember all them jockeys have friends, family and lives of their own; they're people just like you. The death of a jockey means the death of a dad, brother, uncle, son, friend etc. just think before you comment.

+OneMoreMileAnHour it's higher risk from all accidents shown that horses are put down / due too injuries than jockeys die and they don't die cause they might just get injured LIKEWISE a horse expect they put the horse down for broken bones coz they don't want the hassle unlike a human .. i don't care there should be equality even with animals I don't care humans aren't superior we have just made are self superior
@OneMoreMileAnHour
@OneMoreMileAnHour 8 жыл бұрын
+The Football Centre Maybe horses are more likely to be put down because they're a much bigger animal than a human and the chance of them healing well enough to be sound again is unlikely, a lot less likely than with a human. It's also very difficult for a horse to be healed; if a horse breaks a leg or has a serious tendon injury it must be on box rest for a long, long time. Some horses don't cope in stables (my horse hates stables; he's claustrophobic) and therefore it's just not fair to put the horse through such a stressful time considering it may not fully recover anyway. Sometimes "tough love" is the best way I'm afraid.

I think you will find that you can bet on the races outside of the USA and the result stood as 'first past the post' with many of the bookmakers, and all of the bookmakers here in the UK paid out. That makes the sole finisher the "winner". I just found this as well..." the stewards refused to declare the race a no contest. All win/place/show money placed by bettors on all the other horses (except #3) was lost." I'll consider yourself well and truly "shocked".. ;-) seeing as the result stood in the USA.

I was a placing judge at the track the night this happened. The race was not declared a no contest. The 3 was declared the winner (correctly, by WV rules) because he carried his assigned weight over the finish line. Exotics payouts were 3/all, 3/all/all, etc. Multi-race wagers that included the 9th were refunded (this was the 8th and the 9th was canceled.) I don't recall how the place and show pools were handled that night, as every horse in the field was obviously declared a starter; I believe the entire pools were paid to those bettors that had the 3 to place and/or show.

Zoe I have to ask exactly this..do you know what your'e talking about? Do you know that horses do more than just racing, and many owners and trainers regardless of the discipline will now disallow any of their horses to be sold to slaughter...and also the tracks and event jumping centers now will ban connections if it's found the horse was abused...or sent to slaughter? Many ex race horses are retrained in other disciplines, are are adopted out to willing people as pets, or given a second life as therapy horses, or trail horses. Oh by the way, most people in the game are not millionaires and billionaires. Most are trying to get by on allowance claiming races. I suggest you actually talk to people who work backside instead of shooting off your mouth.

I have found that most of those that condemn and ridicule horse racing haven't "lived" at the track, and at the farm. Those of us that love racing, love the horses (and the jockeys) and do not tolerate any abuse. These beautiful animals run because they love it. The youngsters race in the fields, the yearlings race before ever setting foot on track. Are there some practices that need changing, you bet! Let's get rid of the whip, like the Europeans already have. Backing yearlings at sales for speed tests are horrible. No thoroughbred should ever be subjected to a rider and ridden on the track before he turns 2. Good trainers know this. Why take the chance of injuring these youngsters before they are even old enough to race? But this is a sport and like any sport athletes are injured. We are working to learn all we can from track conditions (btw, a sloppy track well prepared can be a fast track, and just as safe, Churchill is a master at maintaining safe conditions.) How about jockeys, perhaps the strongest athletes in sports, and the most underpaid, with no insurance and benefits. Only a very small percentage make it, the rest ride for flat fees that they pay managers and valets out of. They love horses too. So go ahead and talk about something that you don't really know anything about. I can't hear you anyway over the sound of those hoofs coming down the stretch, beating with my heart.

Nobody said that jockeys dont't love their horses. It's just that racing itself is abuse. Maybe there are horses that like it (which I doubt because running on fields and the stress of racing is a huge difference) but racing is si dangerous for the horses...there are so many horses that died while running...it is a shame really. If you love to race with a horse and really care for the animal it shouldn't matter if you're earning money with it, so you could just go and do that on a field.

Mud is actually not that bad for horses it they are not that sloppy, which is probably not the case here. But there has to be mud because of safety reasons. Imagine you being on a horse, riding at full speed, then fall on rocks and a hard ground. Ouch. I have fallen off a horse by galloping. It was not pleasant. Couldn't move at all after that (pain); and I fell on sand. So mud would be probably better for the riders and horses in this case. If no rider died there, they probably would have on stone. Also, why do you fell bad for the horses more than the jockeys? You just said that they either died or be in a wheelchair. Wth? For the horse it might have hurt like normal fall damage. Like if you accidentally trip. No larger thing is falling on them like the jockeys. And I agree with you. Of course most riders care for their horses (

Michael Newton The racing industry is so messed up. Just look up how many horses DIE each year! They are perfectly good horses! Some horses dont even ever get to race on the track before being sent to slaughter.

Michael Newton Not really when the horses are ripped away from their mothers not even after a day of birth. As adolescents, they're pumped full of drugs and forced to race till they drop. If they're lucky to survive racing, they just get hauled off to slaughter.

Tammy Cushing it definitely needs to be reduced, the amount of horses slaughtered every year because the racing industry breeds way too many horses is ridiculous. The racing industry single handedly runs the horse meat industry because without it most of their supply would be gone.

Im sorry but do you actually know anything about the horse racing industry? No? I didn't think. Its actually very corrupt in most cases (luckily not all) but most. Race horses are commonly abused and hurt and later after they're done their racing career, they go off to be slaughtered in a slaughter house.

+The Football Centre my horse is insured with NFU, i pay almost £50 per month for peace of mind, ok? If my horse had such an injury he would have all the treatment he needed. However, as a responsible, loving horse owner, if he had to be on box rest (for a dumb kid like you, that means in a stable) for a year, I'd have to think about it, because my horse is a very hot headed, spooky nervous Arabian horse. He HATES stables. He is terrified of stables. A year of being in a stable is sheer hell for him. Over the Autumn last year i tried him in a stable and he stressed so much he lost loads of weight in the space of 2 weeks. THIS is why I say some horses are simply not suited to the rest part of healing from s big injury. My horse piaffes (for idiots like you that means trots on the spot) in a stable, non-stop, he'd do this even if he was injured. That's not fair and causes pain. This is the reason I think he'd not cope. It has NOTHING TO DO WITH MONEY BECAUSE HES INSURED.
@OneMoreMileAnHour

+The Football Centre AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH TIME BECAUSE HES MY ONLY HORSE AND I ADORE HIM. but if he was stressed and causing himself pain, I'd make the right decision; because that's part of being a responsible horse owner. It's not always about rainbows and unicorns and black beauty friendship times! Sometimes it's abut choosing the right decision; not just the easiest one.

Nathan Tootill You can't just stop a horse in full gallop. especially in the middle of a race. when a horse stops.. You get an accident like this.. To continue riding as best you can is the safest and only option. It would be like being on a freeway at 50 mph. seeing an accident and just coming to a stop.. except instead of just getting hit and hurt/killed the horse would get seriously hurt!

TheBot Bot Agree! He did the right thing and get away from the spill. He could not have been any help if he dismounted his horse he would have had to hold his horse and horses are usually very aggressive coming off the track after a race. I know since I drove and still drive Standarbreds. Accidents are horrible for the humans and the horses. Your taught when a wreck happens in a race to do the safest thing and stay away and let horsemen and medical attention get to the scene as soon as possible. Usually in this type of race an ambulance usually follows the race. Very dangerous sport and sad to see all this.

"Do you give the horse it's strength, or cloth its neck with a flowing mane? Do you make it leap like a locust, striking terror with its proud snorting? It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength, and charges into the fray. It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; it does not shy away from the sword. The quiver rattles against its side, along with the flashing spear and lance. In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground; it cannot stand still with the trumpet sounds."
