Rickrolling is a bait and switch prank, almost always using a disguised hyperlink that leads to the music video for Rick Astley’s hit song, “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Usually there is some sort of build up to get you to click on the link. Like, “look who was in the news!” I mean, it’s difficult not to be tempted to click on something like that. So you do, and "Never Gonna Give You Up" welcomes you. Here is the story of how that all got started.

Well, when you think about it, during Operation Just Cause in 1989-90, “Never Gonna Give You Up” was one of the songs that was blasted out of speakers in order to force Manuel Noriega to come out of hiding, so it can be argued that Noriega and everyone who was working in the Vatican embassy at the time were the first people to be Rickrolled.

I never knew what rick rolling was until the vice video. I just knew that the song was popular again. Something I think could become similar is the Hall & Oates emergency helpline. There is a legitimate phone # that you can call where you are prompted to select 1 for one on one, 2 for rich girl, 3 for maneater, or 4 for private eyes.

So many other artists from the 80s feel into obscurity or had various scandals (I'm looking at you Milli Vanilli) but Rick Astley just did his thing. Honestly, the song is terrible, the video is cheesy but it's quintessentially 80s. Rick embracing rickrolling is actually pretty cool. He (or more likely the record company) could have shut it all down but nope. So here we are. Never gonna give Rick up. 😁
