I like how the cartoon even realistically portrays Tom and Jerry's dynamic, in the first few episodes Itchy is just defending himself from scratchy, but then as they go on, he starts messing with scratchy for no reason. They really did their homework when making these episodes lol

Really, it seems more like they started out making it a straight rip of Tom and Jerry and its imitators, and then realized it was funnier to play up the idea of "wow, Jerry's an asshole." I don't think there was a wider plan, given that Itchy and Scratchy goes back to the days before The Simpsons was even its own cartoon.

@@oldmansportsog2514 Oh, yeah, I don't mean a ripoff. It's more accurate to say it was a kind of "serial numbers filed off" project. The kids needed to be watching something on TV, and they needed something immediately identifiable as a cartoon the kids would be watching, and that was a Tom and Jerry clone - not just because Tom and Jerry themselves are so famous, but also because they inspired a massive host of imitators, to the point of "cartoon where a cat chases a mouse and the mouse defeats the cat" was practically a subgenre. In fact, the creators have said that one of the biggest inspirations for Itchy and Scratchy was Herman and Katnip, one of those imitators. Basically, it's not really a ripoff so much as the Simpsons universe's equivalent of something we have in the real world. Duff Beer is their beer brand, Buzz Cola is their soda, and Itchy and Scratchy is their cat-and-mouse chase cartoon.

fun fact! the creators of The Simpsons were planning an Itchy and Scratchy spin-off, so they compiled something similar to this to see how it would work as a full series. it was so violent that it made everybody nauseous after a while, so they abandoned the idea quickly.

I remember watching The Simpsons on TV, and one of my favorite skits was The Itchy and Scratchy show. Considering I’m a big Tom and Jerry and Sylvester and Tweety fan, the short segments were funny af. Wish they made a shorts series with mini episodes with the two.

If U really think about it, Itchy is one sadistic psychopath and a bully. He's always going after Scratchy who usually just minding his own business and ends up killing the poor cat and always coming out on top in the end. For once I'd like to see Scratchy get the drop on Itchy and mutilate him for a change. See Itchy's blood all over the floor instead.

This is truly one of the cartoons ever made. I remember when Itchy used to say "it's itchin' time" and Scratchy used to say back "it's scratchin' time". The characters were written, the violence was in the show, the animation was animated, the stories were told, Bart Simpson watched it, and the show overall was created.

Satire falls under the fair use provisions of copyright law. Plus, even though Tom and Jerry has gone through multiple writers and directors, and many design iterations and animation styles over the years (some good, some bad), I can't see how anyone could actually confuse this with the real thing.
