this is the video that broke 1000s or hearts and minds. I did this video and said I should do more of these...
Follow me on Instagram for more awesome Vids. Here is a video of how I burst my guitars. You don't always need to spray to get the desired effect. This is a 5A flame maple top that I stain black and then sand back. Then I add layers of Blue and Black to get it right
If you like guitar building content and an awesome guy, please like, subscribe and comment on my vids. I try to answer most questions!
Here I am doing a Cherry burst:

I'm a Luthier as well, but I send my finish work to friend who builds & restores furniture. You really nailed the finish here. Tru Oiling the Mahogany is a great idea. I really like the DC. It's Gibson's sleeper. I think it's the only 2 octave neck Gibson does. Once the fret work is cleaned up, it really is a great guitar.

This technique tends to kill the "flip" in the maple top if you go too dark on the stains. You can get a more lively looking top by doing a lighter top stain and then shooting tinted clear in the same color range over the top. This gives you the best of both worlds. Then you clearcoat everything.

This only works in figured woods. The reason it works is in figured woods like curly the grain is undulating and at times comes up and terminates on the face of the board. This is end grain and is the darker spots in the curl. since end grain takes more dye, you can sand the dye back off the face grain (light areas) and it will stay in the end grain since it went in deeper.

Very nice, I was just going to do a refin project when I discovered that naptha can no longer be purchased in California. Now I have to order it from StewMac. That is exactly the color I wanted on a Warmoth Strat body. Unfortunately, Warmoth used a turquoise tinted poly coat that turned out to be "jade turquoise". Looked awful and had to have another company strip, re-tint and clear coat it.

@roboticcookiez the streaks you see are running against the grain. It's called figuring. It's caused by a disease in the tree. This type of figuring is called flamed (maple). Other types of figuring are quilted or bird's eye

Thanks for the great staining tips. I've always wanted a plus top SG, I have a (edit: black) maple that came down in the yard that has amazing curling in a few spots that I might try as I've taken a ton of notes from your video. I don't have your level of gear, so I'll have to work quite a bit harder at it, but I think it's worth a shot. Worse comes to worse, it ends up flat like a regular SG. I can live with that too.

@@georgelackey622 Since I am a veteran, I get urine tests constantly, so I'm not smoking anything. We get treated like parolees or we can just chuck our medical coverage. I'm using what's available. I have a giant dead tree that's been out there for 3 years and has aged nicely and has amazing curves in the grain where the tree split into three main branches. Nobody said YOU needed to approve it. Sure as shit, nobody was seeking your permission.

Thanks for this video upload. This particular is either an 'exception' from PRS or another maker. The reason I say that is the 'Book-Matching' is superb! I watched a series of PRS videos which may by linked with this page, I am not sure, but so called PRS Book-Match guitar faces were not even close to being matched and coming from the same block of wood. I think PRS keep a better looking grain if it uncovered in the book-match procedure and putts that down for a more expensive guitar.

not necessarily. but dont use top-spec expensive materials in your first try, if you mess up it will be a costly mistake. with shome decent pickups and a cheap bodywood like basswod it can sound pretty good. a lot of tone is in the materials, the craftmansship has way more effect on the playability.

Lovely tutorial. It's nice to have a plastic binding to stop the dye getting near the mahogany, but I was wondering how you would deal with the stain bleeding into a natural binding. (like PRS) I am about to start an unbound flame maple top using your method of black, then building up the green, but I am concerned that the edges will be difficult to keep perfectly natural maple...any tips?

Do you think this would work with a white color on top of the primary black stain? I used some white stain and it looks nice, but the grain doesn't really pop like this. I'm also using curly maple rather than flame maple. I got it from StewMac's arch top top wood. Does this mean the grain won't be as likely to pop like this?
