As a scientist, I love that you did the side by side comparison. It really brought out the competitiveness of the Nonaleaf products but also the necessity to use them with thread. The only thing better would have been a side by side of 30 Nanoleaf lights vs 30 Hue lights!

Exactly. Because in my home I have 28 nanoleaf bulbs. And the more and more thread devices and HomePod minis you add the less responsive and reliable the nanoleaf bulbs get.

I’ve been testing the Nanoleaf bulb as well and noticed that after the firmware update that supposedly had the adaptive lighting it still hadn’t showed up in the “Home” settings. Great video! Thought your point about being able to sync the Phillips Hue up with the Lutron smart light switch was a really good point - I hadn't thought of this myself. Might make splashing out on the more expensive Hue light a bit more worth it. I also believe that the Hue Colour Bulb offers a brighter light when using red/orange lights compared to the Nanoleaf A60, but I couldn't test that myself since I don't have the Hue bulb!

Thanks a lot for this comparison. If you don't mind me asking: what do you think is the best to invest in regarding future reliability and safety? I don't have any smart home accessories right now and going to get my first light strip. I'm debating between Philips and Nanoleaf as well. From what I read, I understand Thread should be more reliable and also safe/privacy oriented, as well as not putting any load on the wifi network. But Philips has more options still. I don't know if I will really get many smart devices in the future, but I want to make sure I take a good route nonetheless.

Been switching to these from Phillips hue as Phillips hue bulbs fail - so far about 3. So impressed with Nanoleaf. Still use the Phillips switches and it works flawlessly with Nanoleaf bulbs. In fact, the Nanoleaf bulbs respond faster than the hue bulbs to the Phillips dimmer switch. Also, Nanoleaf has those built in fade effects that can be used in HomeKit. Cheap, easy, great lighting effects.

Hi Brad...great video. Question - I am on verge on putting these Nanoleaf Essential bulbs in all the recessed lights in a bedroom (that is also used as guest room). But I am wondering about wall switch. Is it essential to have smart switch or can dumb switch turn them on/off (especially essential since guest will not have app on their phone). Is there thread smart switch?
@TheBradLloyd
@TheBradLloyd 2 жыл бұрын
You could use a regular dumb switch, when turned on they will return to their previous state. Of course, when the lights are off they won’t be able to be controlled remotely or within HomeKit at all. You could always use a smart button (no thread options at this time, but there are still some good ones out there). Keep in mind this won’t replace the switch, so guests may not know to use the button and instead just turn the switch off. It’s for this reason I typically use Philips hue when the lightbulbs are controlled by a switch, then add the Lutron Aurora.

I'm a huge fan of Nanoleaf, but I'm sure I would love Philips Hue just as well. The fact that there's even a question, though, given the price difference, should decide it in favor of Nanoleaf. To me, the deciding factor is going to be whether or not Nanoleaf slows my wifi network. I assume it shouldn't, since it's working on Thread rather than directly connecting to the wifi network.
@TheBradLloyd

Nanoleaf will not affect Wi-Fi at all! For the price, definitely the better option over Phillips hue. Phillips hue does have a wider range of lighting products currently. I also like that there is a compatible dimmer switch with Philips hue (Lutron Aurora). So although there is still a place for Hue in my house, Nanoleaf is a really great option!

I couldn’t justify investing in Hue, that a lot of money for a device that has been traditionally a consumable item with a limit life span. after trying two Sylvania Smart+ (worked but very easy to factory rest with a couple quick flips of a light switch). I bought a Nanoleaf, with a few HomePod mini’s and AppleTV it worked flawlessly and rapid in response to voice and especially HomeKit presses. I then bought the three pack (all 4 bought early 2022). I have sense had one bulb fail with a rapid and Radom flicker. The other three have been absolutely 100% rock solid. The very fact that they work with a regular light switch by returning to previous state ( an optional feature in the app ) and support HomeKit adaptive lighting, these are my number 1 choice. Only the Hue white 4 pack is cheaper but has the physical switch flaw. Edit: we experience a fair number of power surges being on the wrong end of the grid when local outages happen. This bulb likely experienced one like many of our electronic and appliances have in recent years.

Hi David, in order to use the Thread connection, you do need a home hub which can be a Homepod Mini or the new Apple TV 4k. if you do not plan on adding a Homepod Mini or new Apple TV 4k then the bulbs will use a Bluetooth connection. In my experience, this connection is not reliable and you may notice it is slow to respond and less range than thread. They will work and you can use them with your Home App but in my opinion, it's not ideal and I would highly recommend a Homepod Mini if you are planning to get other thread devices in future. Hello Brad Lloyd, the speed comparison of Philips Hue vs Nanoleaf without HomePodMini is not Apple-to-Apple comparison. For Nanoleaf (Thread w/o HomePod mini) is is completely BLE between your Siri input controller devices to Nanoleaf Bulbs. For Philips Hue (Zigbee w/bridge. The control flow is controller EthernetZigbee bridge --> Zigbee to Philips Hue bulbs. In short, you are comparing BLE vs comparison.

As I understand it, speed would be compatible, however, many Thread accessories can communicate with each other and extend the range of your "thread network". It also means if one accessor isn't responding, the Thread network can look for an alternate path (another thread accessory) to communicate with. Since the HomePod mini is a border router it's nice that you don't need another hub (just the HP mini).

But would Thread devices like this bulb cooperate equally well with Google Assistant, Alexa and Homekit if they are in a home with an Eero 6 pro wifi network with a Google Nest Hub Alpha Mini Prime Edition, and a Homepod Mini? Chances are Thread will be just another Hue Zigbee disaster. I am reserving judgment. I would love to see more real world tests with Thread from the youtube tech bloggers.

Hey Lawrence, thanks for watching! I am solely in Homekit and I’m excited about thread as well. I hope over time this will reduce the need for multiple hubs and take some of the load off the wifi network. Hopefully thread doesn't cause issues in a multi-ecosystem set up. Time will tell…

@@TheBradLloyd If, when Apple locks itself off to non-Homekit-sanctioned Thread devices like they did with Zigbee or Hue, or Eve turns around and locks their thread devices to just homekit, the future will be just as fragmented as it is now.

@@TheBradLloyd right now I enjoy the low cost of Zigbee products from Sengled and Ikea and the vastly cheaper Amazon Echo products for Voice control, while Homekit provides another visual interface in addition to Alexa.

Hi Renz! Absolutely, you just need a “home hub”. This means you need either an Apple TV (HD or higher), HomePod (including mini), or an iPad that doesn’t leave the home. support.apple.com/en-ca/HT207057

That "essential" bulb with threads and other fancy stuff lost homekit pairing every time power comes off and you have to reset them and add accessory again.

Nanoleaf wins by three factors: Price, (Less than half the price of Hue) fast reaction with thread (do Homekit people really not have HomePod minis?) NO Hub and Much faster action with the thread. That was an unfair comparison using bluetooth, Phillips Hue is a dead product in my opinion, They react slowly to turn on or off, and they're way overpriced not to mention that stupid overpriced hub requirement. That expensive hub is a "patch" because they are really not Homekit certified. I've dealt with Hue tech support when my Hue bulbs went to "no response", and I felt like I was talking through an interpreter! I had to get Apple Care to help me resolve the issue. Goodbye Hue, don't let the door hit you in the (you know what on the way out). Only thing I can say about Phillips Hue is they do have a huge advertising budget.

@@TheBradLloyd lol i was wondering what would happen. Because brown is really just a dark orange. But you can't really produce a dark orange unless you turn down the brightness of orange, which would contradict the brightness setting. Most likely the same result as other unsaturated colors, like gray.

I bought these and I couldn’t have been more disappointed. I have a google hub and an Apple TV 4K. My google home assistant never found these bulbs, the firmware for 2 of the 3 bulbs wouldn’t download. I bought Wiz bulbs to replace them and the wiz bulbs worked great. So it wasn’t anything to do with my system or network. Plus I spent 25 DAYS email the customer service and all they did was send me some KZfaq video links and never addressed the firmware issue. Terrible customer service experience. I asked for a refund even offered to send them the bulbs, but all the offered to do was replace the bulbs which I didn’t want bc they DID NOT work with my google home set up despite being advertised to do so. Such a bad customer service experience zero help or value added.

I’m pretty sure all of the claims of support for Alexa and Google Assistant are based on Matter being released, since no Google Nest or Amazon Echo devices actually let you make use of their Thread radios currently…

Whoever advertises Nanoleaf should always start with an opening statement that this device is only suitable for Apple ecosystem. The users of Android devices shall turn their attention to other alternatives. I wasted a lot of time trying to make their Android application work with essential bulbs. Only to discover that each of the bulbs can be paired ONLY WITH A SINGLE ANDROID DEVICE. So it's either you control the light or your wife does. But not both of you.

@@TheBradLloyd The issue is the cost is way too high. It's like a nickel of plastic and a dollar of LEDs. Then 6 months later an LED light that should never go out, stops working. That's assuming it will stay connected, which they don't, or doesn't have a hub. Worse orange comes out snot yellow and they either won't dim like they should or get as bright as a 40w. Other than that, nothing lol. And sadly I have no recommendations. The search continues ;)

Yeah the nice dynamic scenes are only available in the nanoleaf app. You can’t make group scenes in the app, like a later video of yours instructs, because it can’t add matter devices, which of course you never addressed. You can sync the scenes to HomeKit in the nanoleaf app settings but they don’t work. HomeKit lights them all up at once and no more dynamic scenes, just one static random color at 100%. And it doesn’t remember circadian light settings either. It’s just completely pointless, these stupid bulbs there’s nothing smart about them.
