The Bridge

Күн бұрын

Mike Jones, otherwise known as Garand Thumb, stopped by our headquarters for a podcast and some exciting new projects. On this week's episode of The Bridge Podcast Travis and Mike talk in detail about his new company Onward Research, his journey throughout two military branches, his popular KZfaq channel, and what it took to achieve these amazing milestones. Join Travis and Mike as they take a dive into the lesser-known side of the “Z list KZfaqr.”
Bridging gaps within our industry one conversation at a time. The Bridge is not a show about firearms, training, or the military as some might expect. It’s about people; connecting with others, sharing experiences, exchanging perspectives, and healing together through sometimes vulnerable conversations about difficult topics. We hope to help and heal others as we do so for ourselves by airing these conversations for all to hear. Thanks for listening! We hope you enjoy the show.

Full stop: the right and the left are both needed. A "right wing" only America isn't going to be as great as some may think and nor would a left-wing America. Both sides of the aisle have GOOD solutions and GOOD people who are genuinely interested in making the best country. I'm a liberal who supports 2A. I support self-defense of self and property. I also support not having a situation where poor people aren't having to beg on the streets for a basic roof over their head, clothes on their back, and food in their belly. It doesn't mean I think they need to live in a McMansion and drive a brand new Escalade with eat caviar for breakfast. If you're a POS criminal, there's jail or worse. If you're just down on your luck or fighting some mental illness, I don't think you gotta be treated like a shitbag. I think MOST Americans are like me in that sense.

As an immigrant American here coming to the United States at the age of 21 back in 09. It pains me seeing the divide in the country today. Americans no longer live under the umbrella of the American value. Studying the bill of rights and the declaration of independence to become a citizen is what taught me these values.

I disagree. It's also arguably the most important weapon against tyranny we have ever created. Before the internet, the only information you had access to were whatever books you had access to in your local library (which may or may not be out of date and had an equal chance of giving you incorrect information), and whatever your government-controlled media showed you. The internet, just like guns, is not inherently good or bad. It's simply a tool. If it's made your life worse, that's your fault for not learning how to use it correctly. I agree that most people don't know how to use it correctly, but I believe there will be enough of us who do some day to be able to teach future generations how to navigate it easier. You must simply fight intellectual laziness and learn how to do proper research in a scientific manner. As long as you keep those things in mind, you'll be alright.

Travis, this is my first episode of your podcast ever and it could not have been a better one for my mental state. When you mentioned talking to old folks about whether or not we have had hard times like this and for them to say “yes it’s been worse” makes me feel so much better about our chances as country and a society. I am a 26-year-old father of two and I feared that my children were growing up into a potential hellscape. Knowing that there have been times like this and gotten better makes me a little less stressed about our future and theirs. Thank you and Mike for your insights, from a former Navy service member.

Hey guys. Our Lady of Angels was a school fire in Chicago. 93 children and 3 nuns died. There is plenty of information on it and a book written about it. I would recommend it as good information to read. These things created our fire code. Yes learning from past history and learning/preparing from it is critical. Thanks for both of your work

I love Travis. One of my biggest role models growing up and who I watched religiously while I was in the military. His ambition is what inspired me to train and be a leader. I proudly rock his Dragonfly patches on my gear to this day. He honestly raised and inspired an entire generation of future gunfighters.

I have watched Garand Thumb for years, but this might be my favorite video of him. The humor, the raw emotion, the passion he has for his work, the love he has for his family…everything comes through so perfectly. I am even more proud to be watching his videos now than I was before because you can see he is a legitimately GOOD MAN!

Perfection is dangerous. A good take came from Ed Fowler, a Montana resident and knife maker, also a mastersmith. He did an article called "the last scratch". It was published in whatever world leading knife rag at the time. The premise was him making a budget version of his custom knives. He starts spending time, making the knife just a little better. Within a day, he had weeks of work ahead of him. Chasing perfection, undod the entire premiere of the project.

"it sounds like I'm a military instructor..." I mean technically you are (r)... but that's a good thing! How many of us wish we had a father that taught us those kinds of things with that kind of clarity and purpose, and are now striving to clean up the generational gap and be that kinda of assertive, purposeful, firm, good men that military discipline creates when combined with good values? Thank you for sharing your experience and values and knowledge. We're all doing our best to learn together what our country is far too quickly forgetting.

I love how they brought up “nice guy” and “good men” we have a lot of nice guys and not enough good men. We have a lot of weak men, we have a lot of broken men, we have a lot of defeated men. Loved this podcast! Such a great conversation between these 2 legends! You guys really lay it out very well on multiple things happening in our country and around the world. I definitely share the sentiment that America feels hollow right now and we no longer are the greatest country in the world. This is a battle against good and evil and evil is becoming more brazen and arrogant. Train hard and train smart my friends!

The story of the man that cried during training for missing his family was a great one. The way you handled it with such grace and delicacy was spot on. You can’t build a warrior just physically. It’s also mental and emotional. Otherwise they are fallible and with turn their back when it matters most. They need heart. They need purpose, a reason to keep going Onward and shooting straight. I wish you were my leader back in the day. My life would be so different now
