Friday 5th May 2023 marked the end of an era with the last trains & trams passing over the Glen Huntly Tram Square. The unique level crossing on Glen Huntly Road in Melbourne's inner south east is one where 600V DC tram lines intersect with 1500V DC train lines at grade, with the crossing controlled manually through an adjacent signal box switching between tram and train lines. The level crossing is one of three remaining tram squares in Melbourne, and is used by Frankston Line train services, and trams on Route 67.
The level crossing at Glen Huntly Road, along with the nearby Neerim Road level crossing are being grade separated by lowering the train line into a trench and building a new Glen Huntly train station. In this video we see the last trains & trams to pass over the Glen Huntly tram square along with a number of other train & tram enthusiasts. On the train side we see a mix of Comeng, Siemens and X'trapolis trains, but we also see the Long Island Steel Train heading towards Melbourne. On the trams lines we see B2 Class trams.
B2.2085 became the last tram to pass over the tram square shortly after 9pm. At that moment the level crossing was closed to road vehicles, including trams, as construction on the grade separations ramps up. Trains will continue to operate until the 2nd June 2023 when a two-month shutdown of the line begins to dig the new rail trench and construct the new Glen Huntly station, set to open in early-August 2023.
