I think a lot of this depends on what your Dobie is bred for. I have a European one that was bred for temperament and health and an hour walk and about 20 minutes of fetch and a few puzzle games each day keeps her wiped out. When it’s hot, she struggles to finish her walk. She is also very suspicious and barks at anyone who comes to the door(which I really like), but wouldn’t hurt a fly.

My first dog is a Doberman, I have him now, I'm self-employed and with him every day, all day long, I originally got the Doberman for my mother, I use to deal poker at night, and she would be home alone until the early morning. I thought he would gravitate towards her, that didn't happen, he minds my mother when I'm not around but when I come home, he drops her like she doesn't exist. I take him for walks/runs 2 times a day sometimes 3 times he has a high drive and is ready to go for a walk night and day. I'm a night person and go for walks anywhere between 11pm till 2 in the morning with him. and he gets an afternoon walk and a 4 o'clock run.

I have always loved looking at Dobermans. They are magnificent. But in the 70s they had a terrible reputation. Dog magazines were filled with horror stories. I was just getting into sleddogs in the mid 70s. I was working in a hotel. A woman came up to the desk and asked me if I could help her give some medication to her dog. I said sure. She came back with a full grown massive doberman and asked me to get him to swallow his two tablets. She would hold him. I nearly wet myself. But I got him to swallow the pills, and he won my heart. I fell in love with them. A great breed. Just had to share. Thanks for the video. I've been following you since you started on KZfaq. Thanks for all you do.

This video is bang on. My Doberman pup at 19 months is everything Will shared. That being said, I would not change a thing about her. She is a handful outside with strangers as he mentioned but training daily with her helps huge. Inside she is a big puppy who just wants to play. Thank you Will for having this video on the Doberman breed. Look forward to learn more about the breed from you. Thank you for doing what you do!

We have 2 dobies: an aloof but fiercely family-centric European male who daunts on first sight but wins hearts of those he trusts, and a show-line American female who is confident, sassy and sponge-like in her will to learn. I agree they aren’t for the faint-hearted, but I’ve yet to see a breed so loyal & protective to those they consider their family. Leadership is everything to them.

I have a Doberman that was abandoned and found his way to my house in rural Oklahoma. He was not the easiest dog I have had. I had to learn some tricks to deal with his uncontrolled energy. But he has turned out to be very intelligent and gentle and loving. I have no fenced yard, so he can go where he pleases. There have been no incidents of him causing trouble or harm to any of the neighbors. People are often afraid of him when they see him just because he is a Doberman and looks intimidating, but he is very gentle. I don't think I would ever go purposely and get another Doberman. They are challenging in some ways, but they are devoted and very intelligent.

I for one LOVE Dobermans. A breed that's seen as vicious because of their loyalty and protectiveness for their owners. I've seen how lack of training the correct way can be a headache for all involved. For instance, I once visited a home that I've not ever been to prior, therefore I was unfamiliar to the owner's Doberman. They became very aggressive and nipped me in the back of the leg, after being told to sit and stay as I was invited inside. I've also known a Doberman that was the friendliest goof ball that loves to lap sit for cuddles, because they were trained correctly. They can be beautiful dogs, when with suitable owners.

I love Dobermans but unfortunately I don't have the time that needs to be put into them for life. I have a friend with two and she is a fitness nut that works from home but the daily 10km runs aren't enough; she says they also need to be stimulated mentally to be happy. Smart, beautiful and loving once they're introduced properly to new people but they "threat assess" constantly with new people and environments.

The Doberman you refer to around the 1:25 minute mark made history - my parents had at least 1 Dobe (maybe 2, as they kept a puppy from #1’s first letter) and were living in Kenya at the time this happened - the most remarkable thing about all this is the fact that Dobes are not really good scent dogs, and tend to perform very well physically, but for a short period of time - the sheer tenacity of this Dobe speaks volumes! This incident happened during the Kenyan Mau Mau, a period of severe racial unrest - when I was born, my mom’s first Dobe (Graffin - shortened to Effie) became my nanny - only my mom and dad could come near the pram it it was outside. She was an amazing dog, and would be gentle with anything very young - baby, puppy, kitten etc. I have known the breed all my life, and would so love to have one, but - I think I’m now too old to be able to do justice to the dog.

Doberman like many dogs bred for personal protection are victims of their reputation and looks. I have a rescue, got him at 7 and he has bite scars and is difficult (too many issues to mention), but my God he loves me and I have learned to forgive his difficult ways and I won't be passing him on as many others have already done with him. After 6 months I think he is forgetting about all the stuff he has had to endure and enjoys the good life with me, I'm about to drive for an hour to take him where he can be free.

Goofy but ridiculously intelligent, seriously protective but incredibly gentle and loving, friendly but can be intense, loves to train and play games but very very stubborn. Love our girl to bits, our first dog and yes it’s been hard work but worth every minute of it. Be sensible with a dobie, do NOT let them take control, lots and lots of running, playing and training and you’re good. 👍 Honestly never met a dog that loves cuddles as much as her. One thing I will say, they need to be part of the family, not just lie in a corner out the way. She’s happiest when she’s in amongst everyone, or as she likes to do on top of you snoring like a chainsaw. Forget about your personal space, my space is now her space. 😂

Doberman intelligence is different. It's not just vocabulary size. My dobie quite literally assessed situations and decided if she was going to follow commands - and it also depends on who was giving the commands. She manipulated the absolute hell out of the weak willed people in our house. She had no qualms using violence to protect her pack and our territory. Amazing dogs, but in no way a fit for everyone.

My father got me a dobermann pup when I was 5. I called him Venom (because he was black like Venom from Spiderman). He died at 11 years of age. A year before he died I kept one of his sons, Venom Jr. And when he was around 10, I kept one of Jr.'s daughters, Morticia. She died young tho, she was born with severe epilepsy and I had to put her down when she was around 2 years of age. I lived with dobermann dogs in my life for 22 years and all that I can say is: 1. They are dangerous by nature, they will protect you from everything, even from your friends and family if you don't do your job as an owner. To avoid this, you have to make them socialize all the time. Take them to the park since they are puppies, sorround them with people, and encourage them to pet them. 2. They will probably bite you when they get older. Both Venom and Venom Jr. bite me when they were 7-8 years old. They have problems recognizing people, specially in the dark. Be careful. It wasn't anything serious, they bite me for a second and realized it was me, but it happened.

you are wrong, theres made a invesigation on how mutch doberman attack and how many they kill, what you tell is wrong. in a year rate over 10 years doberman has only kill´t 4 person, and attackt/bite 45 person (there owners), thers documentations on this. to comaresment the labredor kill´s 65 person over the same 10 years and bite 287 person seriously (not owners). the doberman pincher are not the same as the europein doberman, its the same breed yes but they are wery diffrent, thats why they removed the pincher in europa, becourse it can no longer be accountet for a pincher. another ting you forgot to remember is that 87% of the dogs used in second wotld war was doberman, the rest was mix breeds, the doberman was used to defnent pittholes, and send messangers off attack and ambush straight throug enemy lines, where the dogt ran straight throug a battel and the enemy side to delivere messengers to the allied behind the linnes of the enemy, with guns being shut at them and bombs faling around them. The doberman savede an exstream amout off soldiers in world war 2 becaurse off this fearless, and fast strenght, and one even savede a hole front off soldiers (over 200 soldiers) from an abbush and was named the gratest animal war hero off time, a statue was build to he´ss and its falen team mates in there memorie. he was the last surviver off he´s team, and ran straight in to the enemys pitthole where he is told to have jumpt down the pitt hole and found hes way out off the other side wile the eneamy was trying to cach him but coutent. he got the message about an ambus attack to the alliede, and they won the battele becaurse off this. your missing to tell to that the doberman is no longer breed for protection, but as a familly dog, and the most agreeesion is breed out off the breed, they are no longer prone to agressiveness at all, and most off them dont even bother to protect the home from uninvidet guest, becaurse of this., they are loving wit kids in avery age and only here they get protectiv instinktly. other wise they do no longere care unless your in accturealy danger, then they mide start barking. the only agressivness left in them is dog agressivness, witch they tend to suffer to. sadly enough. the diffrent between the doberman pincher and the doberman is exstremly visible in the agression area, the pincher is no longer a guard dog at all, it no longer breed for having abillity to guard, it is breed for kompetition and beauty contest, nothing more, it is smaller and more family focust, where as the europæin is dobble the size often, waighs more and are more stubborn and alert, it will scan the area for danger, and it will not tollerate a hard hand (this is where people get bit, becaurse people think that they shut be physical with the dog bacaurse it suth a big dog, they´s dog´s will not tollerate an attack on them selfs, they will respont recordently off what they get) but other wise, they are high energy dog´s mentally and physicaly, and if there exstreamly high demands are mett FULLLY, they are laying and sleeping the most off the time. if the demands are not met, you will see it in destrouction in your home, they will eat you shoes, bedsheets, underwhere. animal wise are they very tollerant and accept everything new in to there home, if the owner says it shut be there, then is a part off the pack, as long as the dobie can smell it and look that its no danger. the hardest part with a europæin doberman is to meet there demands of mentallising activity and physicallyactivation, bacaurse ther like border collies, no matter how mutch you do, they will rest 5-20 min and there rady to go again full speed. it is not a dog for a peson in a apartment unless you hike ALOT or is out the most off the day where the dog is with you. even iff you have a garnen no matter the size you are going to activate your dog yourself bouth mentally (really importent for them to thrive, more importent then physically activation, becaurse its there sneaky manipulatin brain you deffently shut be aware off, thise dogs can manipulate anyone to thinking it was there idear, the dogs tend to do this less, if there mentally activatet regulary.) this is not a problem in theamerican doberman pincher, becaurse they do no longer breed for the practic user billity's of the dog, like its done in the europæin, so they ten to be pretty staright forward and like other dogs, carme and assurvet, but not manipulating and not prone to hold up the owners action agains him, like the europæin dos. it is wery wrong to say thise to version is the same and compare them, becaurse ther no longer the same at all. not even close. its like comparing a mastif to a corder collie. WERY WERY wrong indeed.

He never said the dobie was THE smartest dog. Border Collies are smarter but they are vastly different in the skills they bring to the table. Dobies are the only breed specifically bred for personal protection. I've never owned a border collie because I know they are extremely high energy and extremely intelligent. If I had a farm or a ranch, for sure I'd have a border collie because it'd have a job. Right now, I'm in the city and need a body guard and he does his job well.
