Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's can be considered creepy. But his street scene of Potsdamer Platz is
most definitely creepy. The bird like women, the predatorial men around them and the deformed structures all make this image nightmarish.

Nothing calm about this calming scenery. His inner trouble externalized even in beautiful nature.

Really enjoyed this. Just discovered your channel. Excellent commentary. Really good production as well. From the introduction to the music that was chosen, everything was well thought out.

I really love Kirchner's work - I love his use of color, how he depicts the human form, and his Expressionistic style. ' Self Portrait as a Soldier' is one of the most moving and, at least to me, definitive representations of war's effect on highly sensitive people. It's art that speaks to its audience and says 'Look at what is below the surface.' And again; it's not the sort of thing people hang in their homes because it goes with the furniture. :)

I could well imagine your videos to air on arte (the french-german culture TV channel), you're canadian, so if you can do it in french, they might buy a french version focussed on european art. contact them!

@@TheCanvasArtHistory then you should look into giving your videos a personal touch or a face, also targeted advertising in social media. I fear an anonymous art channel is hard to market.

Awesome video. I would most probably never get to know Kirchner without this. I love your videos and explanations, even the ones I don't personally agree with. As to why this painting makes us feel unease, I belive it is due to the vortex caused by prostitution. A vortex in imagery, in the distorted lines of the painting all twirling towards the round base where the women are standing (almost like a sink drain). And also a vortex in society, that brings men in and destroys them, their marriages, etc. In other words the destruction of men by prostitution. That makes me feel unease when I look at the picture. On the other hand, it also "attracts" and destroy women, usually led to it by poverty and lack of opportunity. That's why, I understand, the woman in the left is mourning. She is mourning the men destroyed in the process, and also mourning for the situation she's living in and the distortion it causes in her life and society at large. The whole picture looks like a drain pulling in the sewers Berlin made of its people.
