Pablo Picasso's most famous period, his Blue Period, was both cathartic and life changing. It will give the young artist the emotional and artistic tools to eventually pioneer cubism and, eventually, revolutionize modern art. This video will showcase both The Old Guitarist and La Vie, two crucial paintings of the Blue Period, one for its fame and the other for its subject matter.

A close friend attempting a horrific murder and then publicly committing suicide would definitely send someone into a "blue period". I had always assumed before that the name referred exclusively to the color, not knowing there was an inciting event itself that was so terrible and sad.
@willyamezquita4404
@willyamezquita4404 2 жыл бұрын
A known fact that was left out of this video is, that Picasso was fooling around with his friend's crush. The blue period was much triggered by Piccasso's remorse of betrayal to his deased "friend."

One inciting event?? I never took it that way. Picasso was a survivor. If anything, his friend's suicide was perhaps an alert that not everyone is on the same page of creative urgency to exist if for no other reason than to express experiences and seek untold ways to do this.

I clicked on this because I realized this era of Picasso's work is probably what influenced an anime/manga called Blue Period. It didn't click with me at first but it should have! The way Picasso transforms emotionally and artistically shows up a lot in the story of Yatora, the main character of the anime/manga. He discovers his love for art, and it helps him process the loneliness he felt-- His first painting is all in blue hues! Funniest part is how Yatora criticizes Picasso's work on the first episode.

one could argue it's quite an aggressive and misogynistic act to paint the woman his friend nearly killed (and for what - refusing his hand in marriage) in the embrace of her very attacker. she clearly did not love or want to be associated with his friend in any way and yet picasso still painted her with her attacker in a loving embrace, which of course is a fantasy. i gather he prioritized his feelings for his friend over the heinous act his friend committed. seems to be in line with picasso's view and treatment of women in general.

Reminds me of that one artist that, near the end, was drawing what their paranoia basically felt like. But to them it was reality and fact. It's eery looking at the paintings and understanding that the artist felt as though people could read their thoughts, and how that translated into their art.

I had the opportunity of Curating Picasso’s Blue Period to Summer School Programs and a few Case Western Reserve Art Major’s while interning at The Cleveland Museum of Arts. This was a 10/10 experience. I never knew the severity of Depression until I experienced it myself personally. When I look back on the experience of Curating Picasso’s Blue Period the Summer of 2009, I now relate to it so delicately and personally. I now vividly remember the images so profound and in 3D almost. Hearing that Pablo went through a period of Depression for 7 years is so heartbreaking. His Mental Health being illustrated in his work is so personal, yet beautiful. I appreciate this body of work in abundance now. It truly reflects what I personally went through. Anyone battling depression, please remember to seek help of some form and method. You are not alone and after all the rain, the Sun comes out again! :)

Back to discussing the stylistic merit of Picasso's 'Blue Period'. All of the subjects in this period are complex and deeply moving, they seem to resonate deeply with those of us whom has lost a loved one. Your exegesis on the 'Old Man With Guitar', and 'The Life' are brilliant..I love your clever reference to Casagemas's hand gesture as 'noli me tangere'. Picasso's 'Blue Period' is simply my favorte of his many artistic incarnations.

For me the last painting could be images of what Cassegama’s life could have been… it’s possibilities. He is shown as an infant; then he is shown in the bloom of the love he so wanted; then the two paintings are what he could never have because he was dead - the top, a long married couple caring for each other; and the bottom, him as an old man whose love has since died. I think this is a painting of his friend had he had the life he had wanted.

An artists style is simply what type of art they choose to create for awhile and it can change. It doesn't just happen for everyone either. Picasso is known for his memorable cubism but he also had his famous blue period where his friends death and his own depression inspired him to create arts in monochromatic blue tones with a slightly more realistic look. This was before he even started painting cubism. Life ebbs and flows changing us as people and in turn the art we make. Sometimes it's simply whatever we were into at the time

This may be a stretch but, how expensive was color paint back then ? Since you mentioned that Picasso was struggling with money and his paintings where his only form of income, maybe he wanted to paint with other colors but couldn’t since he had no money, sinking more into the blue period thus making poverty one of his themes in the blue period. Also how you mentioned Van Gogh. Maybe this is unrelated but, wasn’t Van Gogh also struggling mentally but he was painting using vibrant colors on his paintings, again I have no knowledge about art or it’s process and maybe Picasso only used blue because it reflected his state of mind.

Just want to ask what do you think about Picasso's relation with women , do you think we should divide the men ( Pablo Diego Jose ...) from the artist ( Picasso ) ?

Picasso painted in blue during this time because he was struggling economically and that's the only medium he could get. It was used for the working class uniforms.

Tbf, this trivia also makes sense in greater scope. It could be fair to assume that besides the events discussed in this video, the fact that Picasso couldn't afford much colors besides blue might have made him in some way upset too. Either way, thanks for sharing this trivia, i learned sth new today :)
